4. MTV aired music videos that were around three-minutes long. But with the introduction of the remote control, and TV viewers’ tendency to switch channels, MTV felt that even these segments were too long, so they created an animated series called ‘X & Y’, to keep their viewer’s attention.

In the show, they would show segments of music videos, then switch back to the characters and offer dialogue and action while the music video played in the background. The show centers on two socially inept, stupid, heavy metal-loving teenagers, X & Y.

6. Eddie Doyle has signed thousands of autographs, posed for just as many pictures, and has raised more than $1 million for Boston charities. Although he never held public office, or performed on local TV, Doyle is famous. He's also among the newly unemployed.

As word spread of his layoff, a former Boston mayor said "He’s as important as George Washington to this city; he’s that well known. If you want to feel good about yourself you go in and see Eddie Doyle, whether you were a total stranger or a longtime friend.” Eddie Doyle’s workplace and his personality highly influenced the styling of a TV show. 10. X is a TV show that initially began as a radio concept. Often credited as being the first reality TV show, it aired as a segment on The Tonight Show in 1951. The show was a precursor to the more recent wave of shows, one of which is Y hosted by Z.

15. X was the brainchild of Y. It was initially rejected due to concerns that such a television series would invoke communalism in the country. However, it was approved and went on to become the ‘most watched television series’ of that genre.

It eventually lost this title to series Z, that was telecast after X’s original run. When aired in the UK by the BBC, Z achieved audience figures of 5 million, unheard of for a subtitled series being aired in the afternoon.

The phrase originates from a scene in the ‘Hollywood’ episode of the American TV series Happy Days, where Fonzie wearing swim trunks and his trademark leather jacket is seen ______________________while water skiing.
