FOOD COMMITTEE
The committee was in-charge in serving food daily. They also made sure the food was
served in time and the quantity and quality was maintained till the last day.
They also took feedback from all members and did changes accordingly
They played an important role in negotiating with the caterers regarding timings and
type of food.
They made sure everyone was served and then served themselves.
They also took care of the food waste and other garbage and made arrangements for
proper disposal.
The committee worked hard to convey to other members to clean the dining place
repeatedly and maintain cleanliness and punctuality.
TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE
During the time of pilot study arrangements were made for transportation by booking
three Toofan's. These vehicles were used to travel to the villages for survey purpose.
Initially there was a slight problem in maintaining the given time by the vehicle
drivers in the mornings which was resolved immediately as it was hampering the rest
of the day's activities. The contact details of the three vehicles were made available to
all the students.
There was constant tracking of the vehicle meter readings with the drivers consent in
order to ensure smoth communication during the payment time.
Final budgeting and payment was made to the vehicle owners on the final day.
CULTURAL COMMITTEE
The cultural committee is begun with the preparation of the programme that is to be
performed in the village communities. The whole class is divided into different
groups to perform street play, singing, dancing and tabloid. And it was made sure that
everyone was included in any of the items. But the group was not able to hold the
rehearsal of the entire programme.
It was decided that the whole class would perform a dance. The group headed for the
village at 4.45pm where the programme is to be held .As soon as the members
reached the venue they set out for mobilizing the crowd. The programme began at
5.45pm and ended at 6.30pm. Song, dance, street play and tabloid was performed
inviting discussions and evoking responses from the people.
The performance was not very effective due to lack of organization on the part of the
committee members and lack of proper practice. As the programme committee
evaluated the programme the following changed were made for the better
performance in the future.
a) Rehearsal of the entire programme
b) Assign duties to the different members to be carried out during the performance such
as who is to be the master of the concert, the person in charge of the sound system, the
persons involved in mobilizing, the people to decide the venue and so on.
c) Planning of the ice- breaking sessions for the children in case of delay in begging the
programmes.
d) Not to force any one beyond one point to participate or practice in anything.
e) Necessity to mobilize more women as audience
One complete rehearsal of the entire programme was held. As faculty and the students
gave feedback on the programmes changes were incorporated. The cultural committee
also had a meeting with one of the camp leader and fixed an order for the programme
and check list was made.
The cultural show at Yedahalli started at 5.15 pm. Half an hour was entitled to
mobilize the crowd in an organized manner. The students were able to convey the
message through the show and generate discussions. The audience seemed to be
attentive and responded appropriately to the situations created in the programme.
During the feedback session men, women and children expressed their learning and
experiences of the topic. The show ended at 6.00pm. On the whole, today’s cultural
show was better planned, organized and implemented.
During evaluation further suggestions were made;
Students should stick to the assigned groups for the mobilization of the crowd.
The respective teams should decide the places where the audience expected to be
seated.
It was proposed that the boys could perform a dance since the time would permit it;
the steps for the dance were choreographed and practiced.
All the members appreciated the cultural committee as well as the participation of the
whole group.
Due to the visit to the dam and the museum there was no cultural programme that was
performed..
At 2.30pm, they had rehearsal of the cultural programmes. At 4.15pm the whole
group along with the faculty left for Andinni where the programme was supposed to
be held. After reaching there the students used various ice- breaking sessions to gather
the crowed. The programme summoned up at 5.15pm and wound up around 6.00pm.
The MC was Prerana and the narrator of the tabloid and street play was Bharathi.
The head mater of the Government Higher Primary School Andinni welcomed the
students and faculty through a speech. He spoke about the importance of girl child
education and thanked the students for conducting the cultural activities in the village.
The crowd responded well to all the programmes. Their interactions proved that the
students were able to convey the message in the manner it had to be. The elders of the
village also gave feedback and positive responds to the students.
ACCOMODATION COMMITTEE
These were the few measures, observations and decisions taken by the committee for
smooth functioning of accommodation activities.
It was difficult to accommodate all girls in the room which was allotted for
sleeping. It was therefore decided to rearrange the room to make more space for
the following day.
The girls rearranged the contents of the room as planned and they slept more
comfortably. Very few, followed or complied with the schedule made for bathing.
A decision was made to avoid bathing in the morning and not follow any
particular schedule. On the both the day’s boys did not have any trouble with the
accommodation. The helper was requested to clean the rooms and take out the
bath room waste.
The girls planned to put the entire luggage in the next room and arrange
themselves in neat, organized rows and columns while sleeping. Everybody was
provided sufficient space and sleeping comfortably on the following day.
Everything went on quite well except the problem of cleaning and the repair of the
motor. The issue of the motor was solved by evening with the help of the
electricians.
To reduce confusion about the order in which the girls have to bathe, a strategy
was proposed by one of the students during the evaluation session. The strategy
was adopted. A piece of paper was put up on the door of the bathroom and the
students who intended to bathe wrote down their names on the piece of paper. The
girls then went for bath in the order depicted by the names list on the door. This
strategy would be continued to be followed as this helps avoid conflict regarding
who came claimed to go for bath first and who claimed to go second.
DISCIPLINE COMMITTEE
During the pre-planning stage the discipline committee made few commandments
with the help of the faculty members, these rules were made for the safety and smooth
running of the camp.
The rules were as follows:
No smoking
No drinking
Decent dressing
Be punctual
Respect your fellows
Maintain decorum
Seek permission
Have fun
EVALUATION COMMITTEE
The committee took feedback from every member during the initial 2 days later it was
observed that it was consuming more time and also did not give a conclusion hence
the committee changed their evaluation pattern
The committee assigned one member from every committee on a rotation basis to
give feedback on their progress and their areas to improve.
Every committee was given equal opportunities to express their views and
suggestions to the other which helped in better functioning of the committee.
The evaluation session was summarized by the camp leaders.
DOCUMENTATION COMMITTEE
The documentation committee consisted of one member from each group and from
each committee in order to document the activities on a regular basis.
The documentation committee collected daily reports from each committee.
The committee played major role in organizing the exhibition after the camp
The committee came up with various ideas for the same in order ensure participation
of all in the exhibition ( students were evaluated based on this)
The committee assigned topics and groups to make models and present their findings
and learnings.
Another major task assigned for the committee was to document photographs and
videos for the Photo exhibition and other documents.
A documentary was also made on the same
FINANCE COMMITTEE
The team was involved in budgeting from pilot study till the exhibition expenditure.
They maintained all the bills and also kept a check on estimated budget and the
ongoing expenditure.
FIRST AID COMMITTEE
Two members were assigned for this committee to care of health related issues
They made sure they carried first aid kit and other general medicines required.
PRAYER COMMITTEE
The prayer time initially had only Bible scriptures read but developed with not only
other scriptures but also words from saints and spiritual leaders like Sai Baba and
Swami Vivekananda.
A small message or quote universal to everyone was also read towards the end of the
prayer time.
Through the feedback received during the evaluation session there was a progression
in ensuring that all the members of the class were on time for the prayer time. This
was done by assigning a class member, entrusting them to the responsibility of
bringing the students together for the prayer meeting.

the school premises hence the venue was rescheduled to Panchayath threshold followed by
taking permissions and meeting the panchayath member. Along with the survey the teams
also publicized the cultural event to mobilize the crowd. The number of samples collected
was 32. As per the time allotted the survey was conducted till 12:30pm. The other half day
was spent for cultural program at the village.
Date : 5th
March ,2013
The group left by 11:00 after an orientation program. The entire group was divided into 2
teams as per the requirement of the day. One team visited the RC (simikere) of Yedahalli to
conduct survey and data about the RC. Team had a transit walk in the RC area and met few
people present there. They could find only one house which was occupied and had an in
depth interaction . The team also identified the facilities available in RC like government

RC , the panchayath office and PHC were not functioning. On the other side the survey was
conducted in the village. The number of samples collected were 11.
Date – 6th

Time spent for the survey was from 8:30 am to 12:30pm.The members conducted the survey
and collected village data from Anganwadi workers , panchayat members, school head master
etc. few members came across Devadasi families during the survey nd hence scheduled a
meeting for the next day in order to have in depth conversation with them. As the target of
100 samples was not accomplished the group planned to extend the survey to the next day.
The total sample collected for the day was 22.
Date – 7th
March, 2013
The group planned another day in order to meet the sample size hence planned for a 2 hour
visit to village for collection from 8:30 to 11:30am.Half of the group went to the village to
complete the remaining samples. The rest of the group stayed back for documentation. As
planned earlier the members had interaction wih devadasi family. The number of samples

school.
Rigid Caste system
No PHC
No SHGs found
Alcoholism
Presence of Devadasi System
Good Infrastructure
Very minimal utilization of rehabilitation centres
Compensation amount and land were not utilized.
GROUP 2
Date – 3rd March, 2013
The group assigned to visit and collect information from Chhabi village consisted of 7
members-Anuradha, Dennis, Bhoomika, Binu, Urbashi, Aakriti and Devika. On the first day,
the group visited Hosa Chhabi, which is the Rehabilitation Centre of the original village of
Hale Chhabi. Certain key people were identified in the village holding important posts like
panchayat member, school teacher, anganwadi teacher, etc.
Observations
Chhabi does not have a separate panchayat; it is governed directly by the panchayat at
Yedahalli.
The RC had good housing and roads as well as other provisions. The residents still go
back to their agricultural land in the old village, which is just 5 km away, to continue
their cultivation.
The farmers who owned land in the old village have received the benefit of good
housing in the RC. However the landless cultivators live in tin sheds or small houses
in the RC.
The village has mostly Lingayats and Ganigas. Even the RC has been built keeping in
mind their caste consciousness, with SC/ST houses being built at a distance.
Date – 4th March, 2013
As decided the students reached the village at 8.00 am. With the help of the identified key
persons, about 25 questionnaires were filled. The group visited the people staying in sheds,
i.e. the landless farmers and collected information from them.
Observations
The landless farmers had more difficulties getting a place to stay in the RC. Some of
them are building houses now while some are still living in tin sheds.
However everyone comes together when needed and the village does have a strong
community feeling to it.
Date – 6th March, 2013
The students visited the anganwadi and interacted with the anganwadi teacher. They also got
about 30 surveys filled. The anganwadi program is running successfully with about 27
children under the age of 3 attending. They also provide information and guidance to mothers
of these children.
Observations:
The anganwadi teacher is a respected and powerful member of the community.
The anganwadi acts as a major agent of social interaction and control both for
children as well as their parents.
Day-7th
March, 2013
The group visited the original village of Hale Chhabi, situated about 5 km ahead of the RC.
The village has not been submerged but a lot of people have lost their land, and more damage
is expected to be seen on heightening the dam. About 20 families still stay in the village,
mostly landless cultivators and people holding other unskilled/semi-skilled jobs.
Observations:
The people here are those who have not received compensation for loss of land. On
the whole, the prosperity seen in the RC is not seen here.
The main occupation among those still in the village is cultivation (not on own land)
or other manual labour work.
The village is not as well connected through public transport as the RC is.
Superstition runs rampant in the village.
Disability (physical as well as mental) is seen in the village.
GROUP 3
Date – 3rd
March, 2013
The third group is consisting of 8 members, Dominic, Justine, Prerana, Bharathi, Daniela,
Hissay, Vidhya Vincent and Deepa. The assigned village is Andinni for the group which has
175 families. The group reached the village at 8.00am. The students were able to interact with
the villagers and get more information about the village and the rehabilitation centre. The
students were divided into three groups for the essay access of the village and the collection
of data through survey. The students were able to visit thirty affected families and collect the
data and the students returned to the camp site at 1.00pm. The total number of the
questionnaires that was collected was about 30.
Observations
This particular village is not really affected by the dam construction, since the back
waters does not reach their houses and institutions (schools, ration shop etc...).
However the people expect to get submerged after the increase in the high of the dam.
The main occupation of the people is agriculture followed by coolie work and
masons.
The main caste is Kurubaru and the religion is Hinduism.
Many adults especially the women are uneducated. However, the children are being
sent to school now.
The elderly are respected in the village.
There is poverty in the village.
The people seemed to be hospitable as almost everybody invited the students to their
homes and spoke to them warmly.
Alcoholism is very much prevalent in the village.
Almost in the village said that they had build the house in the RC but they had been
destroyed either by rain or stolen by thieves.
There is no PHC in the village.
Joint families do exist in the village.
Women are very conservative and shy around men.
Some of the people have built houses in their farms with the compensation money.
Compensations were used for other purposes like lending loans and meeting day
today requirements.
Date – 4th
March ,2013
As decided the students reached the village at 8.00 am. The students began with the visit to
the anganwadis were the teacher helped the students with many informations such as there
are 80 children, 237 men and 236 women in the village. The children take admission in the
anganwadis at the age of 2. The pregnant women receive nutritious food such as green gram,
wheat powder, wheat etc till the baby is born and to the six months of the infant. The children
from the 6th
month to 3 years get milk powder, rice, green gram, jiggery and rava. The
children also get vaccines like Hepatitis- B, DPT, Polio and vitamin A injections. There are
two teachers under whose directions various activities are conducted for young women and
girls about hygiene and menstruation.
After collecting the assigned data for the day all the students went to the school to meet the
head master. He provided the students with the details of the functioning of the school and
the village. The school provides education to the children up to 7th
std and for the high
school they need to moved to Yedahalli. There are 152 students in the school consisting of
66 boys and 85 girls. The school is not affected by the back waters for the time being. There
was a school build in the rehabilitation center but none of the families have moved into the
center, the school is not functioning.
The student completed the 30 survey questionnaires.
Observations
The students are interested in going to school and participating in different activities.
Almost all the children n the village is sent o school.
The people make use of all the facilities available in the anganwadis.
People are happy in the way they live
Date – 6th
March, 2013
The students reached the village around 8.00am and dispersed into different parts of the
village in three groups to collect the data and to have interaction with the people. They also
went to the society to collect the informations about the village and also tried to mobilize the
villages for the cultural programme that the students were arranging for them in the evening.
There were another 30 questionnaire filled on the same day. In the evening all the students
went to the village for the cultural event. At 4.15pm the whole group along with the faculty
left for Andinni where the programme was supposed to be held. After reaching there the
students used various ice- breaking sessions to gather the crowed. The programme summoned
up at 5.15pm and wound up around 6.00pm. The MC was Prerana and the narrator of the
tabloid and street play was Bharathi.
The head mater of the Government Higher Primary School Andinni welcomed the students
and faculty through a speech. He spoke about the importance of girl child education and
thanked the students for conducting the cultural activities in the village. The crowd responded
well to all the programmes. Their interactions proved that the students were able to convey
the message in the manner it had to be. The elders of the village also gave feedback and
positive responds to the students.
Observations
The people are responsive to the programmes organized for them
They do encourage people working with them and for them.
There is a bond that is existing within the village and each family.
People are open to changes and are cooperative.
GROUP 4
Date: 3rd
March, 2013
Village Visit (HaleMurnal)
The 4th
group reached the village at 8:00 am. The group members divided themselves into
two groups of three members each and went for a transect walk in the village. The groups
went into two different directions so as to avoid confusion and started with the survey
questionnaire. The members conducted interviews with the heads of the families and filled
the questionnaires. The members conducted various home visits too.
The group could collect 30 samples by 12:30pm. The group had to start from there at
12:30pm. Before dividing the group into two sub-groups, the members had decided a
common point to visit and met there at 12:25pm. The group reached back to the camp site by
1:30pm. One of the members of the group who was also in the documentation team made a
note of everything that they did throughout the survey.
Observations:
Rapport building helped to mobilize the community members.
Main occupation is daily wages and labor.
Lack of sanitation.
Presence of only one primary school (classes till 4th) due to which there is the issue of

Visit to RC (HosaMurnal)
The group visited the rehabilitation center at 9:00 am. The members interacted with the
prominent members of the rehabilitation center. Around 75 percent of the people have been
shifted to the rehabilitation center. After discussion with the members, the group found out
that the people living there have a general sense of dissatisfaction.
The group again got divided into three sub-groups and started with the survey. The people
were very friendly and co-operated a lot. The members had to collect 50 samples from the
RC. On the 5th
day, the group members collected around 30 samples.
Observations:
People are very approachable and co-operative.
Water problems
Electricity issues
Unemployment
Most of them work on contract basis and thus do not have a stable occupation.

Visit to RC
The group members finished with the survey successfully. The group members made sure
that they collected a sample from each lane. The sub-groups went into different directions for
collecting the samples. The group members also collected the details regarding the number of
people staying, facilities available, presence of schools and colleges etc at RC.
Also, the group members informed the people of the RC about the cultural program to be
conducted on the evening of the same day. The members invited all the people to attend the
cultural program. The members got a positive response from the people of the RC.
Observations:
A PHC is available but is never in working condition.
GROUP 5
Date: 3rd
March, 2013
The fifth group consists of 7 members- Aleena, Charishma, Francis, Lekshmi, Peden, Rashmi
and Saharsha. Since the people of the town knew Hindi, there was no language barrier and
the group members surveyed in pairs to complete the 150 samples given to us.
The group went to the Old Bagalkot and conducted the survey among the people in the town.
The group spread in different directions according to the streets. Every pair went into every
lane and was able to collect about 50 samples.
Observations in Old Bagalkot
Health- places that are half submerged are victims of a buzzing number of mosquitoes
which even is present in their food. As a result they are also prone to malaria, dengue
and other related diseases.
The people say that the government has either given them either land or house or
money but the money is either not enough or the houses are not convenient since it is
far.
The government provides houses to the displaced but the middle men demand money
to shift and so the lower economic people still live in the old town. Some of them
have built tin roof houses in new town due to the lack of money.

March, 2013
The group left at 9 am to Old Bagalkot. They divided themselves in a similar manner
as the previous day and completed 20 samples. The members were able to interact
with the families whose houses were partially submerged and not submerged.
Observations in Old Bagalkot
Some didn’t shift because of employment, lack of money to pay and because only
partially submerged. Another reason is that since it’s been 10 to 12 years of residing
in the partially submerged or not submerged area the people say they are used to it.
There are instances when they are given few hours or a days notice before the dam
gates open and they would have to leave immediately.
Few people have lost strong relationships, friendship and relatives where they have
either gone to the rehabilitation centre or migrated to another place.
Positive- Modernisation, good roads, electricity.

March, 2013
The group left to the New Bagalkot or the Rehabilitation Centre at 9 am which is
about 10 kms from the Old Bagalkot. The group again divided in pairs and spread
across the streets. The group had trouble in finding elders in their houses because of
the election happening on that day. They however managed to complete about 30
samples.
Observations in New Bagalkot/ Rehabilitation Centre
Absence of schools, public toilets but private education is available away from the
rehabilitation centre.
The water is bad and very scarce. The people have to go far off to receive water. The
irony is that the dam was built so that there is a provision of water at least to the area
it is present but the very area finds it difficult to get water.
Absence of hospitals and PHC.
Employment is a problem. The majority of the residence work in the main town
which is minimum 10 kilometers away; and with the low income they receive, half
the money is lost in travelling to the town for their job or to buy at the ration shop.

March, 2013
The group left at 9 am to meet the authority. The group spoke to the head about the
actual issues present in the displacement and what the government has been doing to
help them. After the meeting, the group completed the remaining survey sheets in
New Bagalkot/ Rehabilitation Centre.
Observations in New Bagalkot/ Rehabilitation Centre
Roads are well laid but lack of public transport. The only people who are benefiting
from this entire are the share autos also called tum tums which proves as a good
business.
There isn’t much change in the culture of the people but a lot of communal
disharmony (Hindu and Muslim).
The people do not have any major health issues prevailing.
