First Read Known as a “cold read” Read the article to yourself silently What do you notice as you read?

Second Read Circle key terms

KEY TERMS are words that repeat and relate to the topic or main idea of the article

Third Read Underline claims

CLAIMS are an author’s belief or opinion about a certain topic.

CLAIMS tell the reader what the author’s position is on a certain topic

Analysis and Inference : The Tools of Critical Reading

A critical reader know what to look for ( analysis )

How to think about what to find ( inference )

Audience Who the author is writing to. Example: Some works of music have a

wide and varied audience.

How do we identify the audience?

Look for:

1. Topic – the subject of the text Who would be interested in reading about this?

2. Publication type Where was this article published? Who reads this type of publication?

use when writing. Do these words relate better to one group of

people over another?

4. Sentence structure – the complexity of the author’s sentences

Short, choppy (2-11 words) Long, complex (12-25 words) Does the sentence complexity relate better to

one group over another?

Author’s Purpose the reason the author wrote the text it could be to provide information, to

persuade the reader or to entertain the reader

How do we identify the author’s purpose?

1. Preview the Text Are there any ideas or information conveyed in

the title?

2. Within the text Claims: What can a claim tell us about what the

author’s purpose is? Diction: Does the author use any strong words

or phrases that support his purpose?
