Creating a course in Open Learning 1. Log in to Open Learning with your administration information.

2. Click on “create new course” – enter the new title of the course.

3. Follow the course content setup wizard to add generalized information including logos,

appearance, settings, etc.

4. Click on “course setup” and “content” – add learning activities for each new course.

2. Choose the first module set, and click “edit.” The first module set is automatically titled

“learning activities.”

You can either create the course to include only one module set (learning activities), or

you can create more than one module set within the course and title them separately

(e.g. juvenile mammals and adult mammals):

3. Edit the first learning activity header to the appropriate title for the training:

4. Click “Edit Page” and it will bring you to the following screen:

Here, you can enter text, photos, links to videos, etc.

Videos are only supported by direct PC upload, YouTube, or Vimeo.

Core widgets are located in the sidebar to the left. The first widget is automatically set

as a text box.

5. Enter a title, change the thumbnail photo, and copy-paste training material into the text box:

Edit the text to make it look nice – change colors, headers, titles, etc.

6. When text input is complete, click “Finish Editing” at the bottom right-hand corner. Drag and

drop the “Checklist” widget from the core widgets to below the text box.

7. Add a hash tag at the bottom (links the course objectives). In this example, I’ve used the hash

tag: “coursecomplete.”

Students (users) shouldn’t need to post a comment to the page to get progress unless

you format your course to be more interactive.

8. Change the completion settings for each widget as desired:

“No completion tracking” means that viewing the page will not count towards student

(course) progress (%).

“Completed when viewed” means that the student will get progress (%) for just opening

the page in a browser.

“Completed when scrolled to the bottom of the page” means that the student has

actively read to the bottom of the module and, hopefully, clicked “I’ve done this!” too.

9. Click “Save and Close” at the bottom of the page:

10. You will be taken back to the course setup page. Add new modules (click “Add a New Module”)

and learning activities (“Add a page”) as they correspond to the training material:

11. Complete the module set(s) with a section titled “Test your Knowledge” – include a PDF copy of

the material and a separate learning activity for the quiz:

PDF Materials

It’s helpful to add a PDF copy of your training material for students to download, print, and read as an

extra reference. Click “Edit Page,” include instructions in the text box (ex: “download the PDF to help

you take the quiz!”) and add a “File” widget:

Upload the PDF by dragging and dropping it to the file upload bar.

Do not add a course tag unless you require PDF materials (or other readings/file uploads) to

count towards course progress (%).

Creating a Quiz Go to the “Test Your Knowledge” section of the course content

1. Click on “Edit Page” and begin by entering quiz instructions in the text box at the top.

Change the text box completion settings to “no completion tracking.” Click “Finish Editing.”

2. Choose from various quiz widgets option on the left-hand menu:

3. Select your first type of quiz question. Drag and drop the widget block below the

instructional text box. Click “edit,” and type in your question (make sure to number them!):

4. Enter answers, edit settings, and offer a hint in the text box at the bottom (if applicable).

Click “finish editing.”

5. Continue until the end. Enter hash tag “quiz complete,” and click “Save and Close”.

Types of Quiz Widgets

1. Category Matching

Default:

Change categories to fit a quiz question – add or eliminate columns as needed

o Change words to unique answers that can be placed in each category

o Duplicate words are not accepted

2. Crossword Puzzle

Default:

Title the question and include the question number. Example: “13. Fill in the crossword”

Change words (left side) to fit a quiz question – these are answers to the clues (right side)

o Click “generate crossword” at the end

o Note that spaces between compound words are “greyed out.” Suggestion: use only

one-word answers to reduce confusion.

3. Fill in the Blanks

Default:

Title and number the question. Example: “7. Fill in the blanks”

Delete the text in the structure box. Click “add blank” every time you want to insert a word.

o Avoid capital letters and spaces (compound words)

Use simple and obvious words – do not write whole sentences

Submitting a Quiz There is an option for “submitting” a quiz at the end of the module:

This submit button will provide a quiz score at the end of the module (e.g. 30/31)

o If used, and the quiz is not complete (100%), it will not allow students to complete the

course. Progress will be <100% and a certificate will not be issued.

If you do not include a submit button, each question will display a “check” option:

No score is assigned, but the “test your knowledge section” will report as complete:

Assessment Settings Select “no” for the assessment process settings:

Assessment Design You must specify course outcomes first. Click “specify them” in the link provided.

After specifying course outcomes, you can create a new report:

Course Objectives You must enter a course objective and specify learning outcomes. Each outcome should be linked to an

outcome tag. Outcome tags should be entered in each learning activity for completion.

*Click “SAVE” when all learning outcomes are entered.

Assessment Reports Two assessment Reports are available

1. Assessment (New) Report

You can include quizzes as a focus page, not worth points, but by pass/fail

Click “Add Report” and then “Edit” the report. Title the report if desired.

Specify evaluation criteria under each learning outcome and enter a weight.

Example: checking off “I’m done” at the end of each activity.

Student Assessment You may assess individual students or groups of students by using the filter options. Release the report

after assessment is complete:

Grade each student by clicking the report link and evaluating each outcome:

Certification 1. Setting should be changed to “Open Learning Certificate.” Click “SAVE.”

2. Appearance should be changed by setting up a new certification:

3. Choose a background, logo, text, and teacher signature. Use logos from the G:/ drive in “All

Departments” and “DCHS logos.” Click “Preview” or “SAVE”

Issuing Certificates Issue certificates after students have been assessed and completed 100% (or other chosen %) of the

course:

Certification Status Students can view their own progress and certification status by clicking “certification status.” Staff can

view student’s progress by clicking on individual students in the student list:

Clicking the quiz link in the certification status section of the student list will only bring you to the

original quiz page. You can only view individual quizzes by selecting focus page under the “assess

students” tab:
