The passage of time is both an enemy and an ally. An enemy in that many of the pleasures of life arefleeting, and fade quickly into the past. But an ally in that each day is a new creation (Today is the daythe Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it -Psalm 118:24) -and we are given the opportunity to

embrace more fully the joys and challenges of life.

Jesus said that he came that we would have abundant life -not when we die and go to heaven, but rightin the midst of the muck and marvel of everyday life. As we stand at the beginning of a new year, hereare some of the ways I hope to live into Gods gift of abundant life:

    1. Practice gratitude. I find the best way to start the day is to begin with prayers of gratitude. And one ofthe best ways to get out of a funk is to stop and consider the good God has given me and thank him for it.

    2. Paying attention. When Im focused on a task or have something on my mind I can walk right pastpeople without hardly noticing them. The resolve to pay attention disciplines me to slow down and redi-

rect my attention towards the people I encounter and deal with them as children of God-listening care-

fully, being considerate and trying to be a gracious, loving presence. Quiet dinner times with Susan proveto be an important time both to pay attention to one another, and to the gift of food before us.

    3. Guarding my mind. Paul counsels us that whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about thesethings. We dont have control over what flits into our minds from the subconscious, but we do havecontrol over what we watch and read, and what thoughts we allow to stay in our heads. One of my worsthabits is letting the negativity of the past leach into the present and destroy my joy. I want to do better.

    4. Meditate. Prayer is not talking at God; its a conversation with God. I find sitting in quiet before theLord is one of the richest times of my day. And I think God speaks to me during these times of silence

    -

bringing to mind a person who needs some love and compassion, or an important task I overlooked. Godalso gives me a deep sense of his presence and love that quells my anxieties and brings me joy. Its hardto shut off the mind, but when I do and just sit before the Lord, its wonderful.

Martin Luther once said that Jesus Christ willed the entire life of believers to be one of repentance. Thismeans that every day we try to redirect our minds and hearts towards God -not because he wants grovel-ing submission, but because he wills abundant life for us. These are some of the ways I hope to find thatdepth of life. May 2015 be a year of abundant life for us all.

YOUTH and CONTEMPORARY WORSHIPHappy New Year!

I love new beginnings. I think about our Lord and how per-fect He is, how wonderful, how vast, how marvelous. Andthen I think about me and how UNperfect I am. Momentsof truth like that fill me with eternal gratitude that I serve a

God who provides new mercies every morning. I pray that in 2015, we celebrate this grace-filled

life with joy and thanks, even on the hard days, because yes the Times Square ball only dropsonce a year, but the Holy Spirit is fighting for us every minute of every day, and THAT is a gift.We are not limited tojust onefresh start; in reality, we have an endless supply of them becausewe are in relationship with a limitless Savior!
