Growingup,heattendedschoolsinShelleyandFirth.Wantingtojoinhis3olderbroth-ersandservethecountryheloved,hejoinedtheNavy(Seabees)duringWorldWarII.Afteranhonorarydischarge,heattendedRicksCollegeandIdahoStateUniversitybeforebecomingem-ployedatWilliamsonBodyandEquipmentinPocatelloasasalesman.Duringthistime,hemettheloveofhislife,ElaineSwenson(hisMamaBear).TheyweremarriedonApril13,1952. Decidingheneededachangeinoccupation,hisfather-in-lawhelpedhimgetstartedinfarming.Findinghisniche,heraisedmainlypotatoesstartinginEasternIdaho.Later,Scott&WinmillFarmswasincorporatedandheandhispartner,VernWinmill,developednewprojectsupanddowntheSnakeRiverasfarasOntario,Oregon.Oneofhisfavoriteexperienceswasbreakingnewlandforplant-ingpotatoes.Inadditiontofarming,IshraisedcattleandranchedatHillCityandMagicReservoir.Heretiredfromfarmingin1986.
