Ole Miss Kick Off

All diagrams and Special Teams descriptions are from the kicking team or return team perspective. For example, The KOC L1, L2 etc player is to the LEFT of the kicker. Looking from the Kicking Team perspective, NOT the return team. This will help keep everyone on the same page from both an offensive and defensive viewpoint.

KO = Kick Off KOC = Kick Off Coverage KOR = Kick Off Return SOP = Standard Operating Procedure LOS = Line of Scrimmage PR = Punt Return FG = Field Goal MDM = Most Dangerous Man

Ole Miss is very consistent in their KOC unit. They will kick off from the right hash (KOR perspective) and kick the ball to our right side between the hash mark and the top of the numbers. They will line up with a staggered take off and will fold both the L1 and R1 KOC players. The scatter chart on the next page shows where each of the 20 KO’s have been placed this year. The kicker is #96 and has kicked 19 of the 20 KO’s with an average KO of 65.1 yards. This puts the ball on the 5 yard line. He has had 5 kicks into the end zone. On 1 occasion he kicked a squib kick to the RW of the KOR team going to about the 32 yard line. The average hang time of each KO is 3.9 seconds.

The chart below shows the placement for all of the Ole Miss KO’s this season. They have had 20 KO’s for a 64.9 average kick. They have had 5 TB and no kicks have gone out of bounds. The kicker is very consistent and is looking to kick the ball just outside the hash marks and to the 5 yard line.

Ole Miss has 2 returns both run to the right and left with minor differences in the each. In the diagram to the left the front line blockers are blocking to the right and the second level blockers are returning to the opposite direction. They will leave the KOC 1,2,and 3 players unblocked where they are picked up by the back level players. The “A”, “B”, “C” and “D” KOR players will come together in all returns and advance up field looking for the MDM to block. The returner is looking for a seam in the coverage behind this wedge to run up field. In this return shown it is run to both the right and left side of the field where the returner is looking to run near the top of the numbers and sideline.

This return is the opposite of the return shown already. The front line players are blocking to the left and the back level are blocking to the right and the returner is looking to run to the right side.

Ole Miss Kick Off Return

The return shown below is different from the previous return in that the front line blockers are not blocking one of the KOC “5” players. The “5” player that is left unblocked is picked up by the back level blockers and the return is run to that side. The returner is looking to run this return near the has mark to middle of the field. They have not cut back across the field with a return this season. They will return the ball up field from where the ball is kicked.

The alignment for the Ole Miss Punt team is shown to the right. This is a traditional punt formation with gunners on each side and a wing behind the tackles and with only one personal protector. Look at the other diagrams for a variety of punt formations that Ole Miss has used in the past. The PP is at 5 yards from the LOS and the Punter is at 14 yards from the LOS. The punter is a 2 ½ step punter making the block point at about 9-9 ½ yards from the LOS. The punter has a habit of stepping toward the left side of the punt team or his right side to punt the ball. We can take advantage of this by rushing from that side to block the kick. The punter may step to his right but he will swing his leg across his body and punt the ball straight or to his left. The center will block to his right and the PP will go to the left to block before releasing down field to cover the punt. It is important to remember that the PP is # 17 and is listed as a QB.

Ole Miss Fake Punts

The diagram to the left shows a punt fake by the Ole Miss punt team. The formation is a gunners over and wings over in a slot position. The outside gunner runs a 10 -15 yard out. The wing behind him runs back toward the formation like a reverse. The punter runs toward the slot side. The PP gets a direct snap and rolls to his right and passes to the outside receiver running an out route . The offensive line slide protects in the same direction. As you can tell from the diagram the PP has a couple of other options if the receiver is covered. We have covered all possibility’s this week in practice.

The diagram to the right is a fake punt run by Ole Miss in the Cotton Bowl last year. The Punter will shift to the receiver position. The PP will move forward and over behind the center and take a direct snap. The Right guard will pull and block out the End with help from the Wing on the backside. The PP will run to the left side behind those blocks.

The Punt Return below to the right is a rush return by Ole Miss. They will rush 8 and leave a blocker for each gunner. They have not loaded up the “A” gaps but have shown 1 in each “A” gap and 2 each in the “B” gaps in a rush look. Ole Miss is more of a return team than a rush team. They will rush the punt team but are more confident in their returner gaining yardage up field than their chances to block a punt. The Punt Return to the left is a return similar to last week where they will have 3 PR players off the LOS and they will drop toward the returner where one of them is picking up the center and/or MDM to the returner.

The Punt Return below to the left is a balanced look which Ole Miss will use often when in the middle of the field. As seen in the drawing one of the players will fall back and pick up a gunner to the side of the return. The other will drop and pick up the center downfield. Both ends will rush the shield but will pull up short and block the Lion and Ram players on the shield. The returner is looking for a seam in coverage to the side of the DT on the gunner. In this case the right side as shown in the diagram. The diagram to the right below is just a different alignment on the punt formation but remains a return to their right side.

This is a conventional PAT/FG formation that Ole Miss will use. Check all eligible numbers and be aware of different numbers lined up on the corners or as wing players. In the diagram to the right the wing player on the left side is # 30 which replaced number #83. # 83 moved to the right side and replaced # 80. In this fake FG ran against S. Carolina last week the right guard pulls and turns up field once past the tackle position. The wing is blocking the rushing end. The ball is flipped back to the left wing running behind the formation who follows the blocks on the right side. This Fake was also used successfully by Ole Miss last season vs LSU for a TD.
