ears ago, when the previous developers of the Estate came across this wild and mysterious parcel of land on the outskirts of Centurion, their intuition told them that this was a place where

likeminded people would want to come and live, play and relax.

Naysayers told them that it wasn’t close enough to the city, and that the property market was never going to return from the abyss of a financial crisis.

Copperleaf Estate has proved its critics wrong. Families from all across Gauteng have decided to make the estate their home, their place to grow. The new clubhouse has heralded a fresh phase in the success of

the golf course, and it’s prompted the likes of Ernie Els to place their confidence in the potential and future of Copperleaf Estate. The Els Club Copperleaf is the second club in the world to carry this prestigious title – and the only club in South Africa.

And so, after one or two false starts, and an injection of fresh confidence, the estate is finally reaping the rewards of the investment and progress. It seems appropriate then, that as summer draws to a close, and the harvest season is on the stoep, that we proudly introduce the launch issue of Copperleaf MGZN, an online publication that is distributed to our residents, club members, clients and friends. In it we’re able to boast a little about the achievements of Copperleaf, highlight the people that

live and work here, and include a few lifestyle stories that would interest you.

Here at Copperleaf Estate, autumn also heralds the harvest of many great inputs - the Tshwane Open Golf Tournament, a big-money tournament that is co-sanctioned by the Sunshine Tour and the European Tour. Many of the South African players on the Sunshine Tour will be hoping to reap the rewards of their efforts this season by clinching the title and an exemption on the European Tour. And they'll be working hard to beat big names like Darren Clark in capturing the trophy and hefty prize-money in this inaugural event. We hope to see you there.

Another great in his own field, Vivaldi, had four sonnets written to accompany his ‘Four Seasons’ concerto. The

autumn sonnet reads, “Celebrate the peasant, with songs and dances; The pleasure of a bountiful harvest. And fired up by Bacchus’ liquor, many end their revelry in sleep.”

Bacchus is the Greek God of wine. I wouldn’t recommend drinking until you pass out (Is that where the Americans got ‘Fall’ from?), but I’m with Vivaldi in celebrating the season.Have a brilliant harvest time , and happy reading. Mark

T he Ernie Els Centre for Autism is getting ready to commemorate World AUTISM Awareness Day on 2 April with plenty of new initiatives

in conjunction with the US based branch of Ernie's foundation. "Currently, autism affects one in every eight individuals," explains SA Director Kerri-Lyn Kelly. "And it is five times more likely in boys than in girls. We're hoping to raise awareness levels through various events and drives, and encourage corporates and individuals to throw their support behind the Centre." www.ernieelscentre4autism.co.za

A nd speaking of initiatives, we also love it when a Centurion-based company hits the big time with a superb business or product idea. Neil du Preez has started marketing a novel

‘baby trailer’ that attaches to your bike. His ‘Riksha’ idea originated from his passion for mountain biking, a love for the outdoors, and becoming a father. “I realised that there was nothing available locally to safely cycle with a child, and existing strollers and joggers didn’t quite meet our requirements.” He was involved in agricultural chemistry for six years, so it was quite a mindshift from chemistry to childrens’ products. The ‘Riksha’ lets you bike, stroll, jog and enjoy the outdoors as a family, whilst keeping your little ones comfortable and very safe. It’s a tough and versatile bicycle trailer, with loads of space for your children, towed behind your bicycle with a pivoting coupler. THE RIKSHA also converts to a stroller very easily, ideal for walking the mall, the beach, farm roads or jogging in South African conditions. Lekker! Check out his video and the product development story at www.riksha.co.za, or call him on 082 719 7904.

B y the time that the developers of what is now Copperleaf Estate had begun to lay out the plans for the residential properties and the golf course, they were shocked to learn that much of the indigenous plant life and animal species

had been seriously compromised by decades of poor development and local farming practices. Ernie Els' grandfather, Ernie Vermaak, grew up on this exact 690 hectares of land in and around 1918, on a farm then known as Knoppies Laagte. "Early farming techniques, such as those used by Vermaak would have been a lot less damaging than the later practices," says farming historian, Claus Kruger. "But development around this farm definately saw to it that the native plant and animal species were decimated." One of the more significant changes in the landscape was the removal of trees to make way for farming activities.

The Copperleaf preservation area slowly being returned to its origins as a piece of wilderness – hemmed in by suburbia and blessed with biodiversity – where residents can experience what the highveld felt like thousands of years before the City of Gold existed.

The koppies, veld and wetlands offer something special for every visitor. The developers have planted thousands of indigenous tree

species and have left vast tracts of grassland between the wetlands and koppies. Birdlife is a superb feature of the regeneration of the land.

Some of the koppies’ terrain is challenging enough for an experienced hiker in some places, tame enough for a lazy stroll in others. The rocks are millions of years old. The flora and fauna are diverse and 100% indigenous. The sunrises and sunsets are stunning.

No matter where you stand on the Copperleaf Estate, you’ll have a spectacular view of something – the Joburg CBD, and the highrises of Sandton in the distance, the Magalisburg Mountains, or all three. You might even flush out a family of guinea fowl or a spotted eagle owl, or spot a tortoise or scorpion (hopefully from a distance).

Each season offers its own beauty. In summer and autumn, the area’s highveld grasses are green and taller than a man. The sound of grass swishing in the wind could lull a baby to sleep. In winter, the grass burns and the koppies become stark and brown. The aloes survive the fires, sprouting deep orange blooms.

A fulltime crew helps to keep the natural environment in pristine condition. "We have a long view of this development," says Sales Manager, Peter Ash. "We want it to be restored as much as it restores."

I’ve got fourteen notches in my bedpost!” declares Ernie Els, then leans back in pride before noticing a nervous waiter hovering over him. We laugh because while we know that Ernie is talking about the golf courses he’s

designed, the poor waiter could easily assume something a lot less kosher. “Shame, guess what’s going to be in the tabloids tomorrow?” he chuckles.

We’re both sitting in the sun enjoying the warm ambiance of a pre-thunder Highveld afternoon, with a vantage point that overlooks a lush, aesthetically striking golf course. There’s a slight breeze that bends the sweet African grass toward the valley and cools guests as they explore the new clubhouse, boasting Cafe, Golfers’ Lounge, Golf Shop and Spa. Copperleaf Estate is the chosen location for Els’ second club of his namesake. The first ‘Els Club’ is situated in Dubai. “We actually opened this course in 2008, and shortly afterwards it was named ‘Best New Golf Course’ in Gauteng. “I have a very personal connection to Copperleaf. My Oupa actually owned the land that this estate is situated on. And it was also one of my early designs,” he says. “I don’t know. This course, like Oubaai Golf Resort, has a very special place in my heart.”

I ask Els about the significance of an ‘Els Club’. “When you visit an Els Club you can expect a supreme golfing and leisure

experience reflecting my own personal tastes, and inspired by some of the greatest destinations I have visited around the world in my twenty-plus years as a professional golfer.” He points to the families and couples enjoying the day together. “This is just what I’m looking for – to provide an opportunity for the whole family to relax and unwind, while enjoying world-

class activities and personal service in a relaxed setting. It’s my personal touch. You’ll see it when you go to my club in Dubai, and you’ll see it here at Copperleaf Estate.”

Clearly an ‘Els Club’ represents all the good things in life, delivered with style and authenticity then. Ernie agrees, “It’s reflected in this estate. This fantastic development captures, in one destination, everything I love about family living, from home and leisure to the great outdoors. And set in a country club environment, it has a spectacular course that represents a fair and enjoyable test for golfers of all standards and ages.”

Els’ team has worked closely with Investec Property in tweaking the course and in adding thousands of indigenous trees, all with the aim of providing a challenging course for golfers, while providing a beautiful canvas for the estate’s homes. “Sjoe, there are some golf estates where the houses are built right on the course. But this is not a typical golf estate. This is a residential estate in a Highveld wilderness area, and the golf course runs through it,” explains Ernie. “So you’ll never feel like you’re living on a course waiting for a ball to

fly through the sliding door and smack you on your ‘kop’. He laughs. The waiter is standing next to us again, and Ernie orders his favourite pizza. The toppings are very interesting. Find out what Ernie's favourite pizza is by visiting the Cafe.

Ernie’s team has designed fourteen award-winning courses on every continent. The company had barely started operating in 2000 when they won their first accolade for the Whiskey Creek Golf Club in Maryland USA. They followed that up with wins for Oubaai, Anahita in Mauritius, ‘Els Club’ in Dubai and Hoakalei Country Club in Hawaii. “There’s something magical about designing and laying out a course. I can’t describe it. It’s an all-encompassing mixture of skills, but the most important skill is the ability to reflect the community’s personality. I suppose that’s why Copperleaf Estate is so important to me. It’s one of the closest matches to my own personality – so I gave it the highest stamp I could - an ‘Els Club’ title.”

The ‘Els Club’ Copperleaf is only the second prestigious club of its kind in four years. And there won’t be many ‘Els Clubs’ in the future. It takes a special combination to get the nod. “Much to my delight, the golfers enjoyed themselves on the course today and found it to be a strong but fair test of golf. That’s how we designed it. The new clubhouse and facilities here are second to none, the homeowners at the estate are living out their dreams and that tells me that this is country club living at its finest,” he adds.

‘Els Club’ members have a range of benefits available to them, most notably the reciprocity with a host of other Els-designed courses worldwide. *Stands at Copperleaf Estate are available from R375 000

A little spa goes a very long way, is my mantra since my indulgent midday treatment at the

Copperleaf Spa & Gym. Situated at the Copperleaf Clubhouse,

the Copperleaf Day Spa offers that much-needed break thanks to an impressive treatment menu. The modern, crisp and clean setting is inviting and so is the heated spa pool, sauna and steam room – all of which are at your disposal. It is ideal to arrive an hour prior to your treatment so you can prep your body ahead of your session.

With time being a precious commodity, I am here to test just how effective a mid-day spa treatment really is when deadlines are mounting.

Fortunately for me, a 90-minute escape is up ahead, in the form of the signature relaxation treatment. Within a minute of relaxing on the therapy bed, I am in an almost-meditative state. It involves a divine scrub which removes dead skin cells and leaves skin feeling revived.

The scrub is infused with Neroli oil that has a soothing effect on the body. It also helps with the regeneration of skin cells.

A few minutes of relaxation wrapped in towels is followed by a shower to wash off the salt.

Then it’s time for the specialised full-body massage, which uses unique muscle-soothing stretches and a Middle Eastern deep tissue pressure point technique, focusing on the relief of muscle tension.

Lastly I am moisturised with the Relaxing Body Butter, and feel pampered and relaxed, without even a thought about deadlines, headlines or time.

To find the best treatment, it is ideal to peruse the menu and consult with one of the therapists. Chat to the manager, Melanie, who will add you to her mailing list and keep you updated on all the latest news and developments. AND XEN-TANCreated in 2002, XEN-TAN revolutionized

sunless self-tanner and said goodbye to orangey application and chemical aromas.

Dera Enochson used her 15 years of experience as a makeup artist and product developer for esteemed beauty brands such as Bobbi Brown, Estée Lauder, and Toni & Guy, to create the beautiful olive-undertones of Xen-Tan Premium Sunless Tanning products.

XEN-TAN's dedication to the science of self-tan led them to be the first brand to use a time-release agent in their products. The agent controls the amount of DHA (dihydroxyacetone) released on the skin during application. When released too quickly, DHA creates unpleasant odors and the trademark orange finish. XEN-TAN's time-release process leaves flawless and natural results.

"Our formulas can take years of research and trials to produce because we want to deliver quality products that work for every skin tone," says Enochson.

XEN-TAN is the highest quality of sunless tan products, utilizing the most innovative ingredients and advanced technology in the industry. XEN-TAN products nourish the skin, contain pleasing aromas, and give a luxurious golden glow.

For your chance to experience the XEN-TAN magic, follow Copperleaf Spa on FACEBOOK for details. You could stand a chance to win a complimentary Xen-Tan treatment.

J aun Geyser is no wharf rat. Nor is he a naval officer. But he runs a tight ship at the Els Club Copperleaf. With the upcoming Tshwane Open he needs his team to 'spark'. "We have demanding pro-golfers that will be visiting, and our club will

be on display on television screens all over the world," he stresses. "I'm determined to help put Copperleaf and the Els Club on the golfing map."

As Head Professional at the Els CLub Copperleaf, Jaun's job is certainly demanding. The course has become one of the busiest in Gauteng and his department forms a vital link between the overall operations and the course management, particularly the club shop. "The challenge for our club staff is to constantly be up to date with the latest products and services at the shop, so that our clients never feel as though they're 'farming the rough', so to speak."

Jaun's team speaks highly of him. There is a great deal of respect for him and for each other. It is evident in the way that they assist each other and clients in the shop.

Jaun's experience in superior guest relations has brought much praise from club members and visitors. " At some clubs, the team’s main focus is on shifting the players through the pro shop and course as quickly as possible,” he says. "Without realising that the key to the golfer’s return lies within these small time frames, and providing a personal feel of warmth and hospitality to every single golfer that steps through the doors. Keeping up with the pace of play starts at the first tee box - and how we inluence the start of the day’s play will have the biggest impact on the golfer’s round." Jaun's tight ship ethic is clearly working, and it's attracting hearty attention.

In mid seventies, New York restaurateur, Shirley Copperman opened a bring-your-own-wine eatery on the upper West Side of Manhattan and called it ‘Oenophilia’. Nary

a soul had heard the word before, and writing of the restaurant’s debut, a local reviewer declared, “If the name suggests a rare disease you wouldn’t want to catch, a sign in the window informs you that you may already have it. ‘Oenophilia’, it says, ‘is an affliction of the senses characterised by intense cravings for good food and service and vintage wines served in a tasteful, comfortable setting at reasonable prices.’”

The reviewer from the Village Voice wrote, “Oenophilia - no, not a social disease. It’s the sensual orientation towards the pleasures of

fine food and wine, and the name of a spiffy new bistro for elegant gourmandising.” A new word was introduced to the wine lexicon, and ‘oenophile’ was applied to the class of people who appreciate or collect wine, particularly grape

wines from certain regions, varietal types, or methods of manufacture.

The original ‘Wine Advocate’, Robert M. Parker Jr., one of the world’s foremost wine writers and reviewers, or über-oenophile, is as outspoken about the tools used for enjoying wine as he is about the yield of the grapes itself. “It’s not an oft-considered matter - the vessels used to taste and enjoy our hedonistic activities,” he says. “I was once invited to a prestigious espresso tasting event in Italy. I’d been to coffee tasting events before and they usually decanted the muddy water into small paper cups. But on this particular occasion, the finest porcelain espresso cups were deployed. They spent an absolute fortune on the cups. A fellow judge noticed my astonishment and said something that changed my viewpoint on glass and crystal forever. “Do you taste your wine in a paper cup? No. A cup or glass can enhance or compete with the true taste of the caffe.””

Parker made it his life’s mission to find glass and crystal that actually enhances the taste of the wine – drinking glasses and decanters. “But don’t go and buy the expensive glass without first making it your charge to find out where the glass is made, and the methods and history behind it.”

When pressed to recommend a specific type of glass, Parker replies without hesitation, “The

finest glasses for both technical and hedonistic purposes are those made by Riedel. The effect of these glasses on fine wine is profound. I cannot emphasize enough what a difference they make.”

Professor Claus J. Riedel was the first designer to recognize that the bouquet, taste, balance and finish of wines are affected by the shape of the glass from which they are drunk, and fifty years ago he began his pioneering work to create stemware that would match and complement different wines and spirits. Working with experienced tasters, Riedel discovered that wine enjoyed from his glasses showed more depth and better balance than when served in other glasses. In 1961 a revolutionary concept was introduced, when the Riedel catalogue featured the first line of wine glasses created in different sizes and shapes. Before this, conventional stemware had used a single basic bowl shape, with only the size varying depending on use.

The concept was illustrated to perfection with the introduction of the Sommeliers series in 1973, which achieved worldwide recognition.

A glass was born that turns a sip into a celebration - a wine’s best friend - fine-tuned to match the grape!

CAN A WINE GLASS REALLY AFFECT YOUR TASTE EXPERIENCE THAT MUCH?

Miele is the only manufacturer of dishwashers that is recommended by Riedel for the washing of their glassware. In fact, it produces better results than washing by hand.

ny time is a good time to relax, eat, drink and shop at the Copperleaf Deli. Enjoy

steaming cappuccinos and fresh muffins with friends. Take in a light lunch while sampling a bottle of one of South

Africa’s best wines, or sink your teeth into a delicious pizza while unwinding as the sun goes down. We sat down with a happy Copperleaf family.

Peter and Keitumetse Malebye have been married for almost nine years, and have enjoyed the last two years at Copperleaf. Their little girls are now six and three. Peter works at MTN as a General Manager: Strategy and Business Development and Keitumetse is a Senior Manager: Financial reporting at the National Treasury.

“When we first saw Copperleaf, we liked the fact that it is an estate away from the hustle and bustle of city life but yet so close to the city. We loved the lifestyle it promoted, particularly family oriented activities, like biking, walking and playing, because we believe in connecting as a family amidst our busy schedules,” says Peter. “The tranquillity and quietness that it affords and not to mention the views that make you forget that you are in the city.”

We ask Keitumetse to try and describe the feeling of living at Copperleaf. She smiles, “Oh boy, the English professors are going to get me for this. When you’re so in love with someone that you just can’t describe it, you say you’re ‘madly in love’. Well I can’t find a better description that to say we’re ‘madly in happiness’!”

Peter bursts out laughing and the girls see this as a signal to jump

on their dad. While fighting off the two ‘tickle-princesses’, he adds, “We love having breakfast at the Copperleaf Deli after a good session in the gym on Saturday mornings. Sometimes we take walks to the clubhouse to take the kids for playtime and also appreciate the beauty of nature by watching the views of Magalies mountains. Hosting friends for Sunday afternoon braais and taking them for a tour of the clubhouse is also one of the things we enjoy, but generally Sundays are just for relaxing and enjoying the peace and tranquillity.”

Keitumetse still remembers her happy childhood - Christmas' in Rustenburg and family holidays - so building family memories for her children is chief in mind. “Having dinner at the table with everyone is also one of the great times we used to have so even though our schedules are much busier, we intentionally set aside days like Friday evening where we sit together and eat as a family.”

The Malebyes also believe in teaching their children that love is the foundation of all wellbeing in life. “In order to live a fulfilled and rich life in every area of your life, love should be the main ingredient,” says Peter. “That and ‘happiness’!” The family laughs again, and this time Peter gets his tickle-revenge. *

I can’t find a better description than to say we’re madly in happiness!

ILE D'AMOURstory: danielle weakley, editor for grazia magazine

There's a reason why Mauritius is once again basking in the glow of travelling South Africans' favour - and, no it's not because we had to wait so long for Sandton City's new extension to open

that we spent our money elsewhere. The island is a comfortable four-hour flight, the weather is blessed and the resorts defy expectation, particularly if, like us, you happen to find yourself at Long Beach. This new kid on the block has risen from the demolished ashes of the old Coco Beach Resort and is set on a spacious 66 acres

of beach-fringed island, surrounded by the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. It's the ultimate tropical paradise, with its ocean-view rooms, al fresco living arrangements and robust water sports programme. And, very cleverly, it's been built in such a way that the resort is protected from the wind. Aah yes, the wind. It tops the 'why not to' list for that side of the island - the east coast - but here at Long Beach it's a moot point. In fact if anything, that breezy tickle is pleasant on a steamy hot day and the humidity remains comfortable.

Go boating, diving, sightseeing or, heck, just lie on a sundrenched

The truly enormous indigo blue pool provides a barrier from any unseaworthy weather, while the length of beach is unrivalled at any other resort on the island, such is its dazzling stretch. With this being a new resort, there are fantastic little touches not to be found elsewhere - early risers to the beach will find cabanas housing day beds suspended above the sand, while pool-side there are nooks for bubble bathing and private double loungers (proper deep mattresses, festooned with cushions) from which to dictate your island fantasies.

The décor aesthetic is also more South Beach Miami than Indian Ocean getaway and is the most successful integration of

contemporary resort design on the island. Expect lots of natural materials. They've also instilled a green ethic into the stylish resort - from sustainable wooden decks to stairs padded with local volcanic rock and plants and palms - hundreds of thousands of them - all reclaimed from the original property. It's all open-plan with vast spaces overlooking views of the beach and the waters beyond.

The restaurants are clustered around a stunning central piazza, which is abuzz with music, children, dancers and diners until late in the night. Meal times here are a sophisticated affair - with six eateries from which to choose. There's the buffet (but not as you know it), seafood and Italian options, naturally, but also a Chinese noodle bar complete with chefs who were imported from Shanghai and are renowned noodle masters and Hasu, the sleek and contemporary sushi restaurant that is nothing short of five-star.

Of course, the main focus of events is - and should be - beach, beach and more beach and with this in mind, you'll enjoy the run of glass-bottomed boats, snorkeling, pedalos, kayaks and more - and the catamaran day trip to neighbouring Le Tousserok and its famed desert island spread at Ile Aux Cerfs is worth a gander. It's this enviable stretch of sand from which

the new resort takes its name and it's no hyperbole - the beach is truly impressive and the water expectedly warm and calm in the summer months. Snorkel the coral reef from equipment picked up on the beach or arrange to go scuba diving or deep-sea fishing.

Terrestrial activities have not been overlooked - on overcast days, you can pick up a mountain bike, try your hand at tennis, archery, rock climbing and (phew!) sightseeing. Mauritius is home to stunning botanical gardens and the markets at Port Louis are also great for browsing and bargaining. Better still, the island is known for its factory shops and you can pick up discount designer labels if you're looking. We were happy with our pareos bought on the beach from the comfort of our loungers!

The resort also boasts a spa - and for more adult pursuits you could do worse than retreating to the spa gardens for an afternoon of R&R pre- or post-treatment. It's quietly island-style with water playing a central role in the design, offset by the scents of the island, thanks to carefully placed candlelit votives.

We whiled away the days sprawled on a lounger or lolling in the gentle water and offset these enormously taxing activities with sensational meals - best enjoyed with a cocktail and some late night music by lights (eat your heart out Jean Michel Jarre) at the bar. Nope, we don't need to say it. It was paradise. *

Long Beach is run by Sun Resorts, who owns and operates Sugar Beach, La Pirogue and Le Touessrok in Mauritius. For reservations contact World Leisure Holidays, call 0860 954 954, www.wlh.co.za or email [email protected]

COCKTAIL HOURSBartends at Long Beach are famous for their unique and, sometimes crazy, cocktails. You'd be crazy not to try at least a few.

332 WINE LAUNCH EVENTGuests at the recent launch of the new Ernie Els 332 Wine were treated to a spectacular highveld lightning display - the perfect backdrop to a phenomenal evening. Friends and residents of the Copperleaf Estate and Els Club were welcomed by Operations Director for Copperleaf, Dave Usendorff, and were then given an introduction to the new range by Duncan Woods, Brand Manager of the Els Group. The reason behind the name of the label, 332, was a closely guarded secret until the launch. It is appropriately called 332 as a reference to the number of dimples on the championship golf ball that Ernie Els plays with.

The range branded exclusively for the Copperleaf Estate as is available in a red 2011 Shiraz/Cabernet Sauvignon blend and a 2012 Sauvignon Blanc. Both are produced and bottled by Ernie Els Wines in Stellenbosch."It's an incredible honour to have these wines produced exclusively for the estate," said Ciara M'Crystal, banqueting Manager for Copperleaf. "These are wonderful drinking wines and we can't seem to keep up with the orders."Visit the Copperleaf Deli for your opportunity to taste and enjoy these delightful wines with friends and family.www.copper-leaf.co.za

t’s a rough old world out there. Well it is in the northern hemisphere at any rate. Countries have been queuing up for bail outs and it’s anybody’s guess who will turn up with the begging bowl next. Spain toughed it out and refused to acknowledge it as a bail out because the terms are not as stringent as they were for Ireland but, trust me, it’s still a bail out. “Serves them right” you may think, “loafing around half the afternoon on a siesta….what do they expect

if they aren’t prepared to put in a full day’s work?” Of course it wasn’t just the Spanish work ethic that was the problem, it was the reliance on cheap tourism and the belief in a perpetual building boom that really did for them. That applies equally to Ireland, Portugal and Italy. The fact that the Greeks are deepest in the dwang surprises nobody. Even a Greek will admit that the national stereotype was of someone who retires at 50 on full state pension after an exhausting career as a baker. Why do you think there were so many unshaven, able bodied men sitting on upturned beer crates playing backgammon the last time you visited the Greek islands? They were probably retired bakers.

The question then is this…is it possible to spot the next Euro basket case based on national stereotypes, offensive or otherwise?

You can’t include the Brits in this by the way because they discovered a “get out of jail free” card with quantitative easing, otherwise known as printing money. So while the national characteristic of the Brit is that of a work shy, clock watching, loafer it doesn’t count if you’re not in line for some suffering.

Obviously the Italians were bound to be guests at the beggar’s banquet and now France is under new, socialist management I doubt whether the rallying cry will be “Liberty, Equality, Austerity”. Cutting back isn’t part of the national psyche.

It’s no surprise that Germany isn’t on the danger list. As Europe’s most dynamic and disciplined industrial nation you wouldn’t expect the books not to balance. But cast your eyes east to countries like Latvia, Estonia and Romania and the overwhelming impression is of countries that were never economic powerhouses anyway and only joined the EU in the hopes of hitching a ride. The Scandinavian members of the EU are just too blonde and beautiful to fail which leaves Malta, with its population of 400 000, as the wild card. And when Malta starts asking for a bailout you’ll now it’s time to load up with gold coins. *
