Coorabell Public SchoolCommunity Newsletter

As you know, in Term 2 Mr Coghlan and Mrs Crawford supported the Year 5/6 class to establish pen pal relationships with some of the students from Milpera school in Brisbane and Federal Loves Refugees had the honour of attending the 5/6 Brisbane excursion for the kids to spend the day at the school. The Coorabell P&C subsidised the cost of the bus to Brisbane, donating $370 to the school for that purpose.

It’s now time for the Milpera kids to visit Coorabell! This is a very exciting development in the relationship between the two schools and helps increase the connection our kids feel towards refugees and asylum seekers who are happy to call Australia home. One of the stand out comments of the day for me was my son who said after the excursion ‘mum, you always say refugees are people just like us, but now I know that they are literally just.like.us!’ – that’s what FLR is all about, it’s quite simple really – just people helping people.

FLR has offered to donate funds to the Milpera school to help with the cost of getting their kids to us. They are extending their school camp for a night to make the excursion possible and we didn’t want any of the families, who are already on very tight budgets, to struggle with that cost. We raise funds to support refugees in Brisbane in a number of ways – including simple things like buying kids school shoes, paying for driving lessons, paying for public transport travel cards and paying for legal support.

We would like to invite any parents or community members who would like to contribute toward FLR bringing the class from Milpera to Coorabell on August 16th to get in touch with us. It will cost $30 per child and we are hoping for 18 kids to attend. If you can help we would really appreciate your financial support – any amount would help!

We would also like to invite interested members of the community to attend a FLR film night showing of ‘Chasing Asylum’ on Saturday 27th August at the Federal Hall. Cost of entry is $20 without food, $30 with a vegan meal.

If you can donate any funds toward supporting the Milpera kids visit to Coorabell on August 16th, please email me at [email protected]

Thank you!

Dear Parents and school community, Welcome to term 3! We are hoping that the pace of the P&C will be less arduous this term and thank you so much to everyone who contributed to what was a pretty hectic (but financially rewarding) Term 2. We are keen to start spending some of the funds we have raised and will be asking the school to make the first wish-list purchases ASAP. This term we are kicking off with our social event – Trivia and Tunes – this Friday night. We’ll start with a couple of hours of trivia so you can mingle – we have lots of great prizes thanks to our amazing supporters - and then local sensation DJ Pob will spin a few tunes for us to dance into the evening. The best way you can help P&C with this one is to please come! BYO platter to share, booze and glasses. Due to the tight turn around to organise this one early up in term, please get your tickets ASAP so we can arrange seating. We really need at least 80 people to put this on so please book your babysitter, grab your partner, friend or family member and come along. All proceeds going towards the many new computers needed in all classrooms for our kids. It should be heaps of fun. Tickets are available from the office and you can pay online: Summerland Credit Union A/C name: Coorabell Public School P&C BSB 728 728 A/C 2230 9885 Ref: Your Full Name Thanks for your ongoing support.
