Mint - CoolAvenues.com Annual Placement Survey 2011

Mint - CoolAvenues.com Annual Placement Survey for year 2011 is out. The survey, which is now in its 11th consecutive year, has covered top ten MBA institutes offering two year MBA / PGDBM program.

The schools covered by survey (order does not specify ranking) are IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Lucknow, XLRI Jamshedpur, JBIMS Mumbai, NITIE Mumbai, SPJIMR Mumbai, IIM Kozhikode and FMS New Delhi.

CoolAvenues.com Placement Survey aims to capture the placement process as it happens at the top schools in India and bring out one of the most important parameter in a B-school life, though many B-schools assert or wish to say that they are not in Placement business or Job shops. Given the fact that a B-School is all about business education and the way a value of a company is captured in its balance sheet and profit & loss account similarly, value of an MBA institute can be judged by the value the market ( the key hirers) place on the product of a particular institute and for this sole reason we believe that Placements are the true yard stick to judge a school as no building / infrastructure / subjective or objective component can do a justice to a business oriented product the way markets can do. Unfortunately, B-Schools teach this mantra all time to their students / disciples but forget when it comes applying on their own. Mint – CoolAvenues 2011 Placements Survey captures specific b-school related data including profile with minute points such as number of students actually participated, companies that recruited, Indian and overseas salary details, most popular job stream or function and number of students placed overseas in order to present a holistic view to its readers. Placement data of top b-schools was collected and compiled comprehensively, comparing it with last four years data, starting from 2006.

CoolAvenues.com, which pioneered the concept of Placement Survey in India, has been conducting placement surveys from last 11 years. CoolAvenues released its Placement Survey in 2000, which was jointly published by Business Today as the BT-CoolAvenues.com Placements Survey. This relationship continued for eight years, with Business Today publishing jointly- BT-CoolAvenues Placements Surveys from 2000 to 2007. Mint—A Hindustan Times and Wall Street Journal initiative, published the CoolAvenues Placement Survey exclusively in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010. This (2011) is fifth year in a row when Mint has published CoolAvenues Placement Survey.

About Mint Mint is a Hindustan Times and The Wall Street Journal collaboration launched on February 1, 2007. It is an English business daily published from Delhi and Mumbai—the finance capital of India.

About CoolAvenues CoolAvenues, founded in year 2000, is an MBA community focused website in India which caters to MBA Aspirants, B-School Students and MBA alumni. It has multiple channels such as Jobs, Career, MBA Preparation, B-School, Knowledge Zone, Seminars & Events listing and Café. CoolAvenues main feature has been its coverage of the placement processes of IIMs and other leading MBA institutes.

B-Schools that fared well in Placements 2011

Reflecting the up-surging economy, not only did IIM prove their potential in getting the best hires for their graduating batch of 2011, but other reputed institutes did showed up to the expectations of their students, successfully placing the entire batch—except the ones who deferred placements in pursuit of independent entrepreneurial ventures. Some institutes that have been moving up the popularity ladder are – IIM Shillong, DMS-IIT Delhi, SJMSOM IIT Bombay, IME IIT Kanpur, DoMS IIT Roorkee, XIM Bhubaneswar, IMI New Delhi, BIM Trichy, Great Lakes Institute of Management-Chennai, TAPMI-Manipal, and so on. These b-schools, though missed out in the Mint – CoolAvenues.com B-School Annual Placement Survey 2011, are no less when it comes to placements of their students. The emerging B-schools not just recorded 100% placements; there was also a quantum jump in salaries and total number of offers. Statistics reveal that these institutes are worth keeping an eye.

IIM Shillong, one of the youngest members in IIM family, is gradually becoming the preferred choice of aspirants, as market value of students graduating from IIM Shillong is increasing every year. So with the Indian economy booming, and Indian management students getting international recognition and acceptance, probably sky is the limit for those who dare to dream big.

Placements 2011 extends indefinitely at IIM Ahmedabad

The campus placements at Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad seem to be the longest ever this year. It is for the first time in the history of this premier management institute that placements had gone beyond the annual convocation, which was held on March 26. If official sources are to be believed, there is just one student left to be placed who has “specific profile and location preferences”. “There are enough of job offers for this particular student, but he has his own career choices,” said Prof Saral Mukherjee, faculty and placement committee chairperson at IIM-A. “IIM-A is providing all kind of infrastructural support to this student, but at the end of the day IIM-A is not a placement agency,” added he. According to Prof Mukherjee, “The placements were much better this year and there were many job offers." The final placement process at IIM-A began on February 12 as a cohort based placement process—spread across four cohorts after which it was converted into a rolling process. Prof Mukherjee said, "Placements will continue till three months after graduation or till all students are placed after which we will release final details of placements.” Also 12 students of the post-graduate programme in management for executives (PGPX) are yet to be placed. “You look at the placement data of top b-schools overseas and you will know that the placement for executives continue till three months after graduation and it is not just a case with IIM-A alone,” asserts Prof Mukherjee. According to a formal PGP placement release, IIM-A will be releasing placement statistics within 3 months of convocation. The report will be as per the Placement Reporting Standards proposed this year by IIM-A.

Placements 2011: Finance continues to be major recruiter, consulting follows The economic turmoil has slowly and completely vanished from the economic circles of India increasing total number of offers, recruiters, salaries, new recruiters and what not at b-schools campus placements. Unlike in the past years, when economic recession had hit the world, most of the companies shedding their workforce to cut cost, finding recruiters for campus hires was a tough nut to crack. And even if b-schools managed to have some, the pay packages were not as alluring as they had been always. When the whole world was suffering from recession, if there was something which managed to survive its buoyancy was the finance sector. This year too finance continued to be the major recruiter during final placements 2011 at b-schools around India. Major finance companies like Goldman Sachs, Nomura, JP Morgan Chase, Religare, SBI capital, American Express, Standard Chartred, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank Barclays Capital, Citi Global, Deutsche Bank, HSBC Global, BofA-Merill Lynch, Morgan Stanley and Olam International among others recruited in good numbers. Many finance companies also offered roles at international locations like Singapore, London, Hong Kong, New York, Dubai.

4

Finance firms dominated placements at IIM Bangalore recruiting 36 per cent of the total batch of 348 students, 31 per cent at IIM Calcutta, 32 percent at IIM Kozhikode, 41 per cent at IIM Shillong, 36 per cent at JBIMS, 33 per cent at IIT Delhi and 33 per cent at FMS Delhi. It also dominated the campus recruitment at other IIMs and b-schools. The next top runner in terms of campus recruitment was consulting firms. Consulting majors like BCG, Bain & Co, AT Kearney, Accenture Business Consulting, Cognizant Business Consulting, TCS and Essex Lake group among other recruited in good numbers. Global consulting firms felt their presence at campuses around India, offering roles at international locations like Singapore and Sydney.

Another most preferred sector was marketing/ sales/ advertising. Marketing firms recruited 33 per cent of batch of 203 students at FMS Delhi and 32 percent at BIM Trichy.

B-School Placements 2011 Highlights

It has been an excellent placement season at Indian Institute of Management Lucknow with total number of offers made reaching an all time high at 528, including pre-placement offers, lateral offers and offers made during final placements.

This year, the number of offers per student for a batch of 365 students who participated in placement stood at 1.45. However, last year the figure was some where around 1.2 with a comparatively smaller batch size of 315 students.

A whooping 206 recruiters had visited IIM-L campus for recruitment, while the figure was much lower last year with 121 recruiters visiting campus. The number of recruiters at IIM-L this year is the highest across all IIMs.

If IIM-L had topped the list in terms of number of offers and recruiters, IIM- Bangalore had made it big in overseas placements. The total number of overseas offers made to IIM-B students this year is 74—the highest across all IIMs (the placement data of IIM-A has not been released yet). IIM Calcutta closely followed IIM-B with 64 international offers. In 2010, IIM-C had placed 17 students at international locations.

A post graduate degree in management is usually considered a sure shot route to success—success in terms of high paying salary packages. FMS New Delhi, JBIMS Mumbai and XLRI Jamshedpur had made it big in terms of average salary offered to the batch of 2011. The average salary offered by recruiters was above Rs. 15 lakhs at these b-schools. However, NITIE Mumbai, FMS New Delhi and XLRI Jamshedpur have topped the list in term of salary offered to students placed overseas. The highest international package offered at NITIE and FMS is US$ 150,000, while XLers grabbed US$ 120,000.

The number of lateral offers doubled than last year, but the b-school opted not to disclose the actual numbers. Average salary offered is Rs.16.5 lakhs, which has increased 9.27 percent over last year’s Rs.15.1 lakhs. The institute boasted of 19.25 percent increase in number of Pre Placement Offers (PPOs) over last year, i.e. 48 offers. The highest domestic salary offered at XLRI saw a marginal fall of around 12% compared to last year where the highest domestic salary is Rs.23 lakhs vis a vis INR 26 lakh offered last year. However, the average domestic package saw a 12 percent rise over last year. The average domestic package offered in 2009 was Rs.12.12 lakhs, this increased to Rs.14.2 lakhs in 2010 to Rs.15.8 lakh this year. Finance sector remained one of the top recruiters at XLRI with 25 percent offers this year. However, this is relatively low than that of last year, i.e. 28 percent. ICICI made highest number of offers and with 21 offers it joined the league of top recruiters at XLRI. Students were offered varied roles in finance, marketing, HR, consulting and general management. Marketing emerged as the most sought after profile with 25 percent students accepting roles in marketing. A significant rise in students opting consulting roles is recorded this year involving 25 percent students—just 10 percent students had opted for consulting roles last year. This year about 13 percent roles were offered in general management and leadership. However, according to last year’s placement data available with CoolAvenues, there were no offers made in general management role. Global pharmaceutical major, Novartis AG offered HR Leadership Development role at Basel, Switzerland, offering highest international salary of US $120,000. This figure was $110,000 in 2009. Other recruiters who recruited this year were Goldman Sachs, Nomura Holdings, India Infoline, Citibank, Standard Chartered, Axis Bank, YES Bank, SBI Capital Market, Hindustan Unilever, Cadbury, L&T and Reliance Industries Ltd, BharatiAirtel, KPMG and Lenovo to name a few.
