September 2008
People speak for VIDYA’s work
Who Are We
An indigenously developed grassroot program that India should be proud of - Sen. Hillary Clinton
Rashmi your enthusiasm is wonderful and your efforts are so fantastic. I am always in awe. - Peter Simon
After seeing India and its lifestyle and the need of its impoverished people for the first time, it is so refreshing to see so much positive activity and the commitment of staff and pupils. Thank you for all the information will pass details and pictures to everyone at Monsoon and encourage further fundraising. - Lindsay Mohindra
So many of us look at the problem in the world and become overwhelmed…. It is evident that Vidya has, instead of becoming overwhelmed, embraced problems and has created solutions. I am inspired. - Allison Smith
I thoroughly enjoyed the discussion sessions I had with the girls of class 10. This was one of most satisfying projects, I have ever done. All young women need support, guidance, and role models from their “didis”, and over the weeks we all developed a special relationship together. Thanks for the opportunity, it was a real privilege! - Mrs Mukerji
This has been a magnificent experience for me and my children. Pleae keep in touch. We would love to develop a letter writing program between this school and the one that my children go to in the USA Good luck and Best wishes for a great future! - Ranjani Saigal

Who Are We
Vidya has flourished because of the tremendous passion and energy of thousands of volunteers from across the globe
o All of VIDYA’s programs are managed by volunteers from across the globe
o Many of the creative training methods were conceived and implemented by our volunteers.
o VIDYA’s volunteers span a wide range of ages, nationalities and professional backgrounds – and typically have no formal training in social development.
The expanding network of volunteers has helped VIDYA raise both awareness and funds
o A strong “friends-of-VIDYA” network exists in the US and the UK
o Volunteers are a primary source of leads to potential donors and sponsors.
Volunteers are a critical asset and the core source of motivation and energy at VIDYA

Who Are We
A tremendous amount of energy and focused effort is required to give India’s underprivileged a real chance at a brighter future
Consider a typical family of 5 living in one of New Delhi’s many slum settlements:
Poverty Monthly salary less than $60 (Rs1200)
The parents are labourers
The children are domestic servants
The family lives in a One room temporary “Jhuggi”
Illiteracy
Lack of Health Care Children were not inoculated against prevalent diseases like Polio, Tetanus and Smallpox.
The family cannot afford treatment for common illnesses like Tuberculosis, Malaria, HIV and Malnutrition
Very limited access to physicians and other care providers
Lack knowledge of family planning, disease prevention and nutrition
The parents are not educated The boys went to school, but
dropped out The girls never went to school No one in the family can read &
