Malcolm Whitman, PhD and Yefu Li, MD, PhD, Received U.S. Department of Defense Research Award

Malcolm Whitman, PhD, professor, and Yefu Li, MD, PhD, assistant professor of developmental biology, received funding from the U.S. Department of Defense for, “An Herbal Derivative as the Basis for a New Approach to Treat-

ing Post-Traumatic Osteoarthritis.” Co-Investigators on this project include Tracy Keller, PhD and Lin Xu, MD, PhD, in-structors in developmental biology.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common cause of disability in adults, and the most common cause of disability among military service members who are removed from active duty for medical reasons. Post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) is a cause of disability in young adults who are exposed to traumatic joint damage, and is therefore a major concern for military personnel. OA is a painful disease that involves the progressive deterioration of joint structures such as cartilage that coats the end of bones. Progressive joint deterioration in OA is accompanied by cellular and biochemical changes that drive and mediate the tissue destruction. Whitman and Li believe that this “progressive phase” of the disease provides a good target for therapeutic intervention that ultimately will prevent joint damage.

The goal of this study is to develop and validate in an animal model of PTOA, a practical new class of therapeutics that targets the progressive phase of PTOA. Unlike existing treat-ments, these drugs are meant to arrest disease progression and prevent the onset of PTOA-related disability. This drug class is based on Halofuginone (HF), a compound that is derived from the active ingredient in an herbal remedy origi-nally used in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Whitman and Li recently solved HF’s therapeutic mechanism of action. Pre-liminary data from a mouse model of PTOA show that HF potently suppresses disease development. Data from cartilage cells and cells that make up the synovial joint lining show that HF and related compounds suppress the tissue destruc-tive program that is activated during the progressive phase of PTOA. Work on this project will expand these studies and provide the basis for developing this drug class for treatment of human PTOA in the near term.

Shanele Williams, DDS, Received the Joseph L. Henry Oral Health

Shanele Williams, DDS, MPH 2016, received the The Jo-seph L. Henry Oral Health Program Award. Williams is a General Practice Resident at HSDM working at the Cambridge Health Alliance. She will

receive her MPH from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in 2016. Williams, a dedicated public health and community service advocate, is currently the supervising dentist for the Boys and Girls Club of Boston. She is a clinic volunteer for the following organizations: ACTION (Action for Children and Teens in Oral Health Needs); the HSDM Wampanoag Oral Health Initiative; iSCAPE (Improve Special Care Access and Patient Equality); and, WIC (Women, Infants, and Children of Boston). She recently completed a study, “Using Pop-up Oral Health Clinics to Maximize Well Child Pediat-ric Visits,” under the mentorship of Sang Park, DDS, associate professor of restorative dentistry and biomaterials sciences.

“The Joseph L. Henry Oral Health Program is supported by the Dental Service of Massachu-setts/Delta Dental Plan through a cooperative agreement between the Office of Minority Health and Minority Faculty Development Program at Harvard Medical School. The Oral Health Program is an academic degree-granting program, designed to create oral health lead-ers, particularly minority oral health leaders, who will pursue careers in health policy, public health practice and academia. The program is intended to incorporate the critical skills taught in schools of public health, government, busi-ness, and dental medicine with supervised practicum, leadership forums, and seminar series conducted by leading scholars and nation-ally recognized leaders in minority health and public policy.” Retreived from http://www.mfdp.med.harvard.edu/oral_health.
