Page 2: Concert Listings January to July 2022

WELCOME I am delighted to share details of the second half of the London Symphony Orchestra’s 2021/22 season at the Barbican, taking place between January and July 2022.

Highlights include world premieres of works by Unsuk Chin, Helen Grime and LSO Panufnik Composer Joel Järventausta, the long-awaited UK premiere of Francisco Coll’s Violin Concerto, and the chance to hear more of Julian Anderson’s new work for voices and orchestra, Exiles.

In Music Director Sir Simon Rattle’s programmes, we hear the music of composers from Sibelius, Brahms, Bartók and Weill, to Gershwin and John Adams. We welcome LSO Principal Guest Conductors Gianandrea Noseda and François-Xavier Roth, the former continuing his exploration of Shostakovich symphonies, alongside other Russian greats – Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev – and Beethoven.

In March we mark the 40th anniversary of the opening of the Barbican with Haydn’s Creation, conducted by Sir Simon and featuring an all-star line-up of singers, with a celebration of our young composers and instrumentalists in the foyers beforehand. In June Sir Antonio Pappano, the LSO’s Chief Conductor Designate from 2023, conducts two programmes with a distinctly Italian flavour.

And we look forward to welcoming many more guest conductors and soloists to join us on the Barbican stage in these months. In April and June trumpeter Håkan Hardenberger joins the Orchestra for an Artist Portrait series, in celebration of his 60th birthday, with music by Helen Grime and Betsy Jolas. André J Thomas conducts a special programme celebrating the tradition of gospel music in May, and Barbara Hannigan returns in February, for concerts that take listeners on a journey from Paris to America.

Further to these Barbican concerts, we are delighted to present a full schedule of events at LSO St Luke’s, including LSO Discovery Free Friday Lunchtime Concerts and our regular resident series of Lunchtime and Early Evening concerts in partnership with BBC Radio 3.

I hope that you will find much to enjoy, and I look forward to welcoming you back to an LSO concert soon.
