A lot of hard work for a relatively minor matter. We know why we are in SIR and Branch 69 is fortunate in that we already know we have made some friends for life. And, how many really do read the banner of the logo any- way? However on a VERY positive note, our Branch was again praised by the State SIR President Don Dill for our activities and growth. He is reaching out to our own Tom Page and Jim Porterfield. DAN’s DIALOG

The behind-the-scene life of being Big SIR is

filled with smiles and frowns. First the smiles.

I left the luncheon early last month to attend a State SIR Project 2016 meeting. I had never heard of Project 2016 either. It is an attempt to

slightly change the image of SIR for the benefit of some of the struggling Branches. You might see things evolve

SLOWLY as the State/Regional/Area SIR members focus on an image upgrade. A new phrase, “We are SIR – Make Friends for Life” is likely to become the motto. And there might be a de-emphasis on “retirement” even possibly to the point of adjusting the Rooster logo to take the “Sons in Re-tirement” banner off. This is all the part where I smile. A lot of hard work for a relatively minor matter.

We know why we are in SIR and Branch 69 is fortunate in that we already know we have made some friends for life. And, how many really do read the banner of the logo any-way?

However on a VERY positive note, our Branch was again praised by the State SIR President Don Dill for our

activities and growth. He is reaching out to our own Tom Page and Jim Porterfield. He is asking both to provide him information for articles on recruitment at the Golf Expo and our couple events (Dinner Theater plus Lunch & Explorer). These articles will be sent to the other Branches as examples of new and original ways to spotlight SIR in general and Branch 69 in particular.

One last interesting fact. Our Branch is part of Region 3 – the 15 Branches with lunch meeting spots in Sacramento, Carmichael, Rancho Cordova, Elk Grove and Shingle Springs. State SIR statistics of active Branch membership for the past 8 years (2008 to the present) shows that of the 15, only 1 has more members today that it did in the spring of 2008. Yes, us!!! While we have added 40 members, the

other 14 have averaged a loss of more than 42 each – plus 3 other Branches in the Region have disbanded.

Thank you all for your vitality.

WELCOME

Don’t forget to attend our Sirs Day in the Park event on Wednesday June 15th. See the flyer attached to this newsletter for additional information.

The June 9th luncheon is the last day to pay for the picnic lunch.

The June luncheon is also the last chance to contribute with some reusa-ble gifts sitting around. Any donations would be appreciated. Little Sir Jerry Schroeder will be collecting your offer-ings.

Jim Porterfield, Activities Chairman

DAY IN THE PARK

Now the frowns. I left last month just after the commit-tee chairmen had given their updates and you all were en-joying your salads. I hear the entrees were late in coming. This was brought to my attention so I met with the Dante Club management. They have apologized and have com-mitted to better service. We should see the salads served directly after our salutation and the start of entrees being served within 15 minutes from the start of salads being served. Also, all entrees should be delivered within 10 minutes of their starting. We will see.

GOLF TOURNAMENTS

BOWLING NEWS

Our branch added another new mem-ber at the May luncheon, plus we had sev-

eral guests in attendance at the luncheon--keep those friends coming!

Thank you to all the branch members who served shifts in our booth at the Golf Expo. We were well represented and our booth looked good. Seventeen interested guys filled out contact sheets, so now the job is to get them to a luncheon. Several of the contacts are planning to do just that in June.

Tom Page, Recruiting & Publicity Director

Several of our league bowlers per-formed really well at the State SIR tour-

nament in Carson City. We had a lot of bowlers there, competing in different divi-sions. Mark Steffens took 1st place in the second division overall. Erle Hansen took 3rd place in the same category. Mark took 3rd in the divi-sion 2 singles and Erle took 6th. George Langford and Steve Eason took 2nd place in the division 1 double, while Rich Taylor and Emory Haworth finished 5th in that category. Bud Rogers, Steve Eason, George Lang-ford and Tom Page finished 7th in the division team event.

We have a couple tournaments coming up this sum-mer. Pollock Pines is hosting a SIR tournament July 23-25, always a fun, well-run event. In August, quite a few

of our bowlers are planning to compete in Reno at the National Bowling Stadium.

At our July luncheon, I will pass around a signup sheet so that previous league members and other inter-ested guys can sign up for our 2016-2017 season. We have a lot of fun—come join us at Country Club Lanes next season.

On May 14 Our Dinner/

Theater Group enjoyed a

production of “Hello Dolly”

which was performed by

young actors from The El Dorado Musical Theatre

(EDMT). It was presented at the Harris Center in Fol-

som. Now in its fifteenth season, EDMT is one of the

premiere youth theater companies in the Western

United States. More than exceptional theater, it is also

a place where young people can build confidence for

life through excellence in theater production. And their

production of Hello Dolly, with a 30 member cast of

very talented young people, was a perfect example of

theater excellence. The show was a hit for our group of

35 theater goers.

“Hello Dolly” is not a show that deals with particu-

larly weighty issues, although it’s far from saccharine.

What it is is an excellent escapist comedy with sterling

performances, catchy songs, and witty dialogue that

makes you yearn for the old days.

Quality Branch 69 apparel dis-

played monthly at the luncheon.

Located on the back wall partition,

Sir Mike Ratzlaff brings in a color-

ful display. Jackets may be out for

the summer but it’s time to pur-

chase that golf shirt or hat. This

picture shows purchases made last

month by members Tony Vigil,

Ted Patterson, Fred Smith, Merritt

Davis and Ken Lentsch. Thanks for supporting the club.
