Worship Notes:Participants: Dr. Karl Haffner, our senior pastor, presents today’s sermon for the Advent season. RandyDaniel, one of our elders and a financial planner, hosts today’s worship. Victor Brown, dean for enrollmentmanagement for Kettering College, will read today’s Scripture and present the Prayers of the People. JerryTaylor, our minister of worship and music, is the organist/choir director for today’s service.

As we gather for worship, we hear music by the Kettering Advent Ringers under the direction of JoanUlloth Dorgan, and by the Praise Orchestra, under the direction of Donald Huff. The

is more commonly known by the title, which comes from a set of words that wascreated by Peter J. Wilhousky. is a 5th-century Greek carol sung to theFrench tune, is a new Christmas composition by William Gordon, who is theretired conductor of the Pasadena Tabernacle Band of the Salvation Army. is a favoritehandbell arrangement by Linda McKechnie from Houston, Texas, that has been orchestrated by her brother,Don Marsh, a composer from Franklin, Tennessee. Along with the carol, is music fromBizet’s from his “L'Arlesienne Suite #2.”

(Hymn No. 149) was originally a children’s hymn to help them understand theteachings of the church. These words were set to the tune, by Henry John Gauntlett, an Englishorganist/composer. Gauntlett, who was also a lawyer, was the organist for the first performance ofMendelssohn’s

is a McKechnie/Marsh arrangement for handbells and orchestra. The original melody wasextracted from Handel’s “Messiah,” but no one is sure exactly what part of the “Messiah” it is extracted from. The words are a paraphrase of Psalm 98 by Isaac Watts.

is a medley of carols in a setting for handbells and orchestra by Douglas E Wagner, a popularhandbell composer who lives in Indianapolis, Indiana. Uniting the tonal palette of the orchestra with thejoyous sounds of English Handbells, presents the carols,

and in a unique and festive setting.

(Hymn No. 23) is included in the the Oxford Book of Carols and datesback into the 1800’s. The tune, , is a Welsh carol. These carols were often used for celebrationswith dancing and words were supplied on the spot. Somewhere in the late 19th century the words,

became associated with this tune, still later the “fa-la-la” part which would have been played on theharp, was substituted for performances where there was no harp available.

is yet another collaboration by McKechnie and Marsh for handbells andorchestra. This carol was first published by John Work, Jr. in his , 1907.
