Brace yourselves for The Compass of Mystery: a journey across the parameters of mysticism and magic, down passages of intrigue and suspense, through curtains of uncertainty and illusion, to half-glimpsed truths, unveilings and revelation!

Compass Film takes this year’s festival of cinema and Arts in a new and mysterious direction… Inhabiting an unused space, a hidden gem in an urban landscape, the Compass crew will transform their venue into a magical world to house this year’s festival.

In a month of film, poetry, visual art and performance, the festival will explore the depths and dusty cobwebbed corners of the theme of mystery, inviting you, the explorer, to throw down your backseat viewing apparatus and shake off the shackles of spoon-fed culture, to walk hand-in-hand with us through a glistening gateway and experience the world beyond!

Amongst the labyrinthine halls and corridors of Mivart St Studios you will discover art and beauty aplenty. From within this world we invite you to partake of a multitude of films, of theatre, circus, magic and poetry, music, dance, fine foods, drinks, and all in such excellent company! From within this new physical and intellectual framework we bring a plethora of viewpoints around our theme, with seminars and talks from magicians, psychologists, academics and thinkers.

The programme will culminate in Compass’s trademark programme of international cinema. This year’s compass directs us to an exciting selection of films from Poland (North), Pakistan (East), Somalia (South) & Argentina (West), showcasing the creative wealth of these communities sampled from our own and more distant shores. Framed by the insights of local migrant community members, as well as the discussions of audience and panellists, each screening will offer illumination into far-flung worlds and our Bristol home, assimilating the new and the old through the eyes and ideas of our own communities and other more remote ones.

THE SPACEMIVART ST STUDIOS

In a time in which urban organisation can represent control, and the prioritisation of money and agenda over community and creativity, the spaces and places we choose to practice, present and perpetuate art and community become vital.

In a move to try and reach new audiences, involve diverse and marginal communities, and to promote a less city-centric approach to the enjoyment of quality Arts & Culture, we have moved our festival to Easton, one of the most ethnically diverse and creatively vibrant communities in the South West.

Through a city-wide collaboration of individuals, organisations, creative bods and volunteers we aim to

create a vital artistic, dynamic and community-led space, freed from the constraints of more established venues, and offering a unique audience experience: a world into which the viewers invest as soon as they enter the venue, and not just at the moment the lights go down.

Community members are invited to author this space and contribute to the world being created within. As a blank canvas, the festival venue and the events within it are waiting for you to make you mark. Free of assumptions, the month’s activity – and the two weeks ‘creation time’ that precede it – will represent an organic chain of contribution, reaction and response. At the end of the festival the world will disintegrate… until next year!

Mivart St Studios occupy a former Victorian factory squeezed into a residential street off St. Marks Road in Easton. The large, red brick building has housed various industries over the last hundred years including aircraft construction and clothing manufacture. Today it is home to an eclectic mix of artists, makers, designers, performers, musicians, furniture makers and small businesses, some of whom will be contributing to, and exhibiting as part of, The Compass of Mystery Festival.

MIVARTARTISTS’ EXHIBITION

ongoing / FrEE

Mivart Artists are diverse and sometimes elusive, due to the labyrinthine building they inhabit and their passion for the hard work of making art. They will respond to the festival with both mystery and imagination. Exhibiting artists will include Jon Bentley, Brandon Chambers, Marilyn Marshall, Niamh Collins-Jackman, Tristram Tyler and Ruth Piper. Although very different in their approach Jon and Brandon are both figurative painters. Their work contains a strong narrative quality that, like dreams, are open to interpretation. Marilyn’s dreamily remembered places

or events are realised through a skilled use of paint. Niamh’s abstract oil paintings are often a response to an emotional situation. They incorporate unusual printing techniques and sometimes make reference to land and sea. Tristram’s strange atmospheric landscapes are a contemporary take on a traditional genre. Ruth constructs bright acrylic paintings in a diagrammatic format that explore the delicate balance between freedom and control.

Mystery is a chameleonic breed of film… shifting, elusive, and ever changing its form. Exclusively at the Mivart St. Studios this autumn, it can be spotted in the shadow of gallows, the dancing diamonds of the harlequin’s costume, the velvet folds of a conjurer’s cape, the unsung and undiscovered magicians of the camera…

The Compass film weekend (16–19 October) gathers together the elusive cinematic treasures of four physically disparate countries from the corners of the globe. This year the Compass eye fixes its stare upon Poland in the North, Pakistan in the East, Somalia in the South and Argentina in the

West, framing each screening with a critical introduction. This is a festival for the people of Bristol. The focus countries form a substantial part of the multi-ethnic DNA of this diverse city. We aim to promote international and homegrown cinema and uncover the talent that courses through Bristol’s creative veins.

Compass looks to stretch the cinema experience beyond its primary focus, catapulting you into a world of your own making. Experience the arena of cinema beyond the screen, and lose yourself in the labyrinthine passages of Easton’s very own magical mystery tour…

Suspicion and intrigue lie at the heart of this rollercoaster tale of romantic harmony thrown into chaos. The film’s iron grip squeezes an Achilles Heel of loyalty, fidelity and trust. What happens if your new wife is a serial killer? Or maybe that’s just what your best friend thinks? Newly weds Jama and Samira are in marital bliss but their happiness is blighted by Yonis, Jama’s untrusting best friend. Yonis muses suspiciously over the situation, believing the new wife to be a brutal nymphomaniac. The feverish mystery at the film’s core reaches a climax when a sudden turn of events changes their lives forever, and all three are flung into a deadly race for the truth.

Death and the Compass, one of Cox’s most ambitious, inspired and visually stunning films, is a deliciously dark adaptation of the short story by acclaimed Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges. In a totalitarian metropolis of the future, Erik Lönnrot is a gifted detective investigating a series of strange murders and disappearances that seem to implicate the insane crime lord Red Scarlach. Enlisting the help of Alonso Zunz, a principled journalist, Lönnrot believes that he has uncovered a labyrinthine occult conspiracy. However, has the investigator’s brilliance merely precipitated his own destruction?

The very first modern horror film to be shot in Pakistan – a groundbreaking display of contemporary Pakistani film talent, breaking all the rules of local productions and made entirely independently with no film industry or government assistance. In the spirit of the E.C. horror comics of old, the film tells the story of five teenagers who, after losing their way to a rock concert, are menaced by flesh eating mutations and then fall into the clutches of a family of backwoods killers. The film gorges itself on copious helpings of gore alongside a splattering of social commentary and several slices of dark humour. It is best seen as a tribute to the cinema of Lucio Fulci and George Romero, but viewed from a distinctly Pakistani perspective. The film is directed and co-written by former film critic Omar Ali Khan. Its cast combines some of the country’s most exciting new talent alongside Pakistani film veterans such as Rehan and Najma Malik.

Mr Ahmed reflects on the two major migrations in his life, first as an eleven year-old Muslim – a passage from India to the newly formed Pakistan – followed by a migration to the UK. This story is part of Independence Stories and was made in a five day workshop at Easton Community Centre with members of the Asian Day Centre. The workshop focused on the personal ‘Independence’ stories of Bristol-based people from South Asian backgrounds, reflecting life in India and Pakistan, and the legacies of partition. The workshop was led by Bristol-based digital animation artist Tajinder Dhami, Aikaterini Gegisian and Paddy Uglow from the Bristol Stories team, with extra support by Nathan Hughes.

This film has been dubbed the darling of Bunuel, Scorsese and Francis Ford-Coppola, who have all described The Saragossa Manuscript as their favourite film. The film unveils a heady world of mystic eroticism and unnerving supernatural antics as we see young army captain, Alfons, in Spain during the Napoleonic Wars. He discovers an old book telling the story of how his grandfather, Alfons van Worden, sought the shortest route through the Sierra Morena mountains. Inevitably, the shortest route reveals itself as a wild, unruly path and leaves the audience tumbling, like Alice in Wonderland, down some unknown chasm. Dream-like worlds and unearthly characters – ghost princesses, demon possessions and blinded crazies – leap out of the storyline and wreak havoc over the screen. David Lynch described this magical cinematic concoction as ‘simulateously horrific, erotic and funny… this is one mother of a film’. Sit back and watch the madness play forth!

Bristol City Council Community Services: Community CohesionBristol has a changing population. New and growing communities are settling in the inner city areas and beyond, bringing both advantages and new challenges around cohesion and integration. Working with partners from across the Council and the voluntary sector, the Community Cohesion Team leads the Council’s community development response to working with new and settled communities. The ‘bottom up’ approach is at the heart of the work, enabling local residents and organisations to take responsibility in addressing change in their neighbourhoods.
