Introductions
Congratulations!
Attitudes:
1. Having a good website is important.
2. It is something that you should invest time and at least a little money in.
3. You can do this.
Technical skills:
4. Be able to set up a wordpress website, change the theme, create pages, posts, and menus, and add content and media to the site.
5. Understand the concept of widgets and plugins and what they can do.
6. Know where you can go to learn more.
What I hope you take away from this:
I am not a web designer
I am a business owner who has taught myself what I need to know to effectively market my business online
I am not a graphic designer
I am a business owner who has taught myself basic graphic design skills to improve my marketing materials
There are many ways to do things. Today I will be showing you one way. It may not be the best way. If you know of a better way, please speak up so that we can all learn something new.
Disclaimers
We have a lot of material to cover, so we’ll be moving quickly.
If you find yourself falling behind, don’t worry.
A recording of this class will be posted online at: redpointmarketingconsultants.com/wordpress-resources
Tomorrow you will get an email with a link to this page as well as a link to our marketing toolbox page.
There are also links on that page to a number of online video tutorials, blogs, forms etc. related to Wordpress websites.
(Remind Kevin to start the recording)
In case you can’t keep up…
What is a domain?
What is web hosting?
What is Wordpress?
With a self-hosted wordpress site, you get:
Much greater control over how your site looks and what features it can have
The ability to install any of the 23,000+ plugins that add new functions to your site
However, you do have to pay hosting fees of $6-10 per month, and handle your own backups.
With a wordpress.com site, you get:
A free website with a blog
More free themes to choose from
However, you have limited control over your site, and your web address will end in wordpress.com.
Self hosted Wordpress vs Wordpress.com
Wordpress.com is great for personal blogs and websites for individuals, but is not a legitimate way for a business to set up a website.
Self-hosted Wordpress sites are an excellent way for businesses to set up a website that they can maintain on their own with very little technical expertise.
Use a reputable hosting provider like GoDaddy or Bluehost that provides one-click Wordpress installation and 24/7 technical support.
The bottom line….
What is a blog?
What is SEO?
Search Engine Optimization
