What is Project Management
It is the discipline of organizing and managing resources* so that the project is completed within defined scope, quality, time and cost constraints.
A project is a temporary state to define and create a unique
product or service, to deliver business benefits or added value. The role must manage the convergence of existing resources with
proposed project changes which are often very different. This requires varying technical and management activities and skills with a core understanding of the client’s business.
The first challenge of project management is to make sure that a project is delivered within defined constraints. The second, more ambitious challenge is to optimize the allocation and integration of inputs to meet pre-defined objectives.
*(resources = money, people, processes, materials, energy, space, provisions, communication, etc.) to meet the pre-defined objectives.
Why Is It So Important?
Simply: Money and competitive advantage ……
A well defined project plan is key to the selection and justification process
Project management reduces the workload and impact on the business during that period of change
Project management should control deliverables to schedule and within agreed budget
A well executed project plan will deliver more successes than failures
Note: the reason projects fail is mainly due to ‘dirty’ data and
people/politics than the selection of the wrong or poor performing solution
