Brazil: Brasilia

Building a Capital for Brazil: Brasilia

razil’s capital Brasilia, was built to be the new capital of the country, with the idea of transferring

the federal capital located on the coast, inland, thus helping to populate that area of the country.

It was inaugurated on April 21, 1960. Since then, the transfer of the main offices of the federal

government to the new capital began with the change of the headquarters of the Executive,

Legislative, & Judicial branches. Brasilia, built in three and a half years, is defined as an achievement

in urban work since the said transfer of powers went so smoothly. In 1987 Brasilia was declared as a

World Heritage Site by UNESCO, thus being the only city built in the 20th century that has received

such an honor.

Brasilia Today

Brasília attracts all not only because it is the

administrative & political center of the country,

but also due to the exquisite architecture

created by Oscar Niemeyer and the efficient

urban planning by Lúcio Costa. This makes the

metropolis the largest and most appealing

outdoor museum. The boat rides through

Paranoá Lake, vast museums, shows, and

cultural events are other attractions that cause

tourists to flock here from all over the world.

What to Do and See While in Brasilia

Helicopter Rides

It has been described as an amazing experience.

The truth is that flying on a helicopter is always an

interesting thing. From on high you can clearly see

the heart of Brasilia with its buildings resembling

different objects such as an aircraft or a central axis.

Admire too the presidential palace, the supreme

court, and many other public buildings. You can also

see the lake and its surroundings.

In Brazlândia, nature has prepared a special

place for those who want to enjoy beautiful

scenery and diving in crystal clear waters. A

series of 30 cascades, waterfalls, and

natural pools of water are found around the

federal capital. One of the most popular

areas that receives many visitors is Pozo

Azul, a waterfall with a natural pool made for

swimming. It was formed in recent years as

a result of a geological accident. The fall is

about seven meters high.

Pleasurable Strolling

June to October is ideal for walking around the city

and seeing the flamboyant show of the Ipê trees (or

Purple Trumpet Tree) in full blossoms of white, yellow,

pink, and purple flowers. During these dry months the

landscape combines masterfully with the vivid colors

of these trees. The arrival of spring is announced by a

show of Ipê trees scattered everywhere in the capital.

Such beauty has become a pleasant, customary sight

in the city.

was completely demolished to make

way for a monumental stadium

which facade has 288 columns of 36

meters high, indeed a colossal

structure! The games in the football

category will be held here. How

exciting to have such an emblematic

Sao Paulo of Yesteryear

ao Paulo is the most populous state, it has the largest industry, the largest economic

output, the highest record of immigrants, thus, it is by far very cosmopolitan. It was built

with the strength and work of people from all parts of Brazil and the world.

There are 645 municipalities and a population that reaches nearly 40 million people. With the

best infrastructure and skilled labor, Sao Paulo is known as the locomotive of Brazil’s

economy. The state produces almost everything, mainly high-tech products. But the distinction

is not only in the industry, the Paulista (also known as Paulistanos) - of or pertaining to Sao

Paulo or its inhabitants - excel in farming and livestock assets.

Sao Paulo also offers a lively nightlife; there are numerous choices of restaurants, theaters,

and night clubs. Of all the reasons to fall a little in love with São Paulo, its vibrant nightlife is

one of the best. The Sao Paulo night is blessed with a sophisticated, wide-ranging selection of

Brazil: Sao Paulo

On Sundays, an interesting option is a visit to the municipal

market of Sao Paulo, located in the old city center. It has a

superb range of spices, fruits, meats, souvenirs, among

many other things. You will be invited to try Brazilian fruits,

but bear in mind that many traders charge for tasting, so it is

always good to ask before if there is a charge. On the second

floor of the market, there is a typical, unique food court with

various bars and restaurants. There one can appreciate the

architectural beauty of "Mercadón" (as it is called in Sao

Paulo) and taste the famous bologna sandwich and cod pie.

In addition to being the business

capital of Brazil, Sao Paulo also

offers a wide range of entertainment

options. You can start the day with a

coffee in a typical Paulista bakery, a

habit of the locals especially on

weekends. The Galeria dos Paes

(Gallery of the Loaves) and Bella

Paulista bakeries are excellent

options.

A must in Sao Paulo is the MASP

(Art Museum of Sao Paulo) which is

located in the heart of Avenida

Paulista. It offers permanent and

traveling art exhibitions with artwork

of local and international artists.

Figueira Rubaiyat, Rstaurant in Sao Paulo

Figueira Rubaiyat which opened in June 2001, is owned and managed by Belarmino Iglesias

Filho, who also owns the celebrated Baby Beef Rubaiyat barbecue restaurant. Spreading its

enormous branches over the main dining room of the restaurant, there is a magnificent 100-hundred

year-old fig tree. Strongly influenced by the Mediterranean cuisine, the restaurant kitchens are run by

chef Francisco Gameleira. Among many other options, Figueira’s varied menu offers salads, meats,

paellas, fresh pasta, fish and seafood baked in clay ovens heated to 600ºC, and beefsteak and lamb

broiled in wood-burning ovens.

The impressive Figueira Rubaiyat wine list, one of the most varied in the whole of Latin America,

features no less than 700 different wines. These are carefully stored in the restaurant’s two-floor wine

cellar, which due to its glass walls, can be viewed by the diners. The wines come from 15 different

countries such as Italy, France, Spain, United States, South Africa, and of course, Brazil.

The Figueira kitchens are in

full view of the diners. Seven

huge glass circles are built into

the brick wall separating the

kitchen area and one of the

dining rooms. Here, the

activities taking place in front

of the four clay ovens (fueled

by orange tree and coffee tree

logs) can be watched through

these glass walls strategically

Rio de Janeiro of Yesteryear

io, the second largest city of Brazil is

also called the wonderful city because

of its beautiful landscapes, the most famous

carnival in the world, the samba schools, its

happy people, and booming tourism. Rio was

founded in 1565 by Estacio de Sa, with the

name of Sao Sebastiao do Rio de Janeiro, in

honor of the then King of Portugal, D.

Sebastião. Two hundred years later, in 1763

Rio de Janeiro became the capital of Brazil, a

title held until 1960, when Brasilia, the current

capital of the country was constructed.

No River!

Rio de Janeiro means “January River”. It was

named by mistake: there’s no river there. The

explorer Gaspar de Lemos set sail from Portugal

in 1501 and arrived at a huge bay in Brazil the

following January. Thinking the bay was the

mouth of a river he named it after the month.

Rio de Janeiro Today

Who has not seen a picture of Christ the

Redeemer in Rio and dreamt of visiting it one

Rio de Janeiro will gladly surprise you and

you will fall in love with it. No wonder Rio was

declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Rio's beaches are visited not only for its

gorgeous colors and sandy beaches, but it is

also a meeting place where locals and visitors

mingle without prejudice in order to exercise,

sunbathe, or play one of the most famous

beach sports: footvolley, or volleyball without

hands, which originated in Rio.

Genaro and the team were always available to meet and

discuss our needs at the site inspection, prior to the program,

and while on site. They were very patient with us with our

arrivals and departure list and worked with us on site helping

with the many changes and updates daily since over 60% of the

clients did their own airfare and over 70% of them never sent us

their flight information. Very pleased with all your services.

Feijoada

History of Feijoada

According to Wikipedia, Feijoada

has been described as a national

Brazilian dish, especially of Rio

de Janeiro, as other parts of

Brazil have other regional dishes.

Brazilian Feijoada (Feijoada

Brasileira) is prepared with black

beans, a variety of salted pork or

beef products, such as pork

trimmings (ears, tail, feet), bacon,

smoked pork ribs, and at least

two types of smoked sausage

and jerked beef (loin and

tongue).

This stew is best prepared over a low fire in a thick clay pot. The final dish has the beans and

meat pieces barely covered by a dark purplish-brown broth. The taste is strong, moderately

salty but not spicy, dominated by the flavors of black bean and meat stew. It is customary to

serve it with white rice and oranges, the latter to help with digestion. A variant, Feijão com

arroz is the rice and black beans without the addition of the meat.

Add an orange touch to this recipe.

Oranges are a very Mediterranean

product with a fresh taste and rich

in vitamin C, which is beneficial for

our sight, skin, hearing, respiratory

system among some properties. At

the same time, oranges help us

with digestion as they have

degreasing power. The perfect

accompaniment for such a hearty

dish.

Scholars suggest that the history of feijoada traces back to Brazil’s cultivation of beans.

Because of the crops’ relatively low cost of production and the simplicity of its maintenance,

beans became a staple food among European settlers in Brazil. Although black beans were

eaten by both the upper-classes and the poor, the upper-classes particularly enjoyed them

with an assortment of meat and vegetables, similar to feijoada, while the poor and enslaved

usually ate a mixture of black beans and manioc flour.

Make certain your laptop computer is fully charged. You may be asked to turn it on by

the security inspectors.

Remember, in addition to your checked luggage, most airlines only allow two carry-ons,

which must fit under the seat in front of you or in the overhead bins.

Items not usually counted as carry-ons include overcoats, camera, umbrellas, reading

materials, and purses of a reasonable size.

Under-the-seat carry-ons must be no more than 45” over all (length, height, and depth

combined).

Remember, too, luggage space differs on different plans: Airbus A320, and Boeing 737-

300 have more room; McDonald Douglas DC-10 and Boeing 757 have less.

Avoid the bulkhead; it doesn't have under under-seat storage.

Consider boarding the plane as soon as you can to claim the overhead bin space.

Try not to place your bag in a n overhead bin behind you or you’ll have to buck the tide

when the plan unloads.

Never, ever leave your bags unattended.

Don’t carry your bags over on e shoulder. Balance the distribution to easy neck and

back strain.
