Wilson College 150th & 151st Annual Commencements May 13–16, 2021
from president wesley r. fugate, ph.d.Congratulations!
Commencement is a sacred tradition in higher education. Today, we pause and recognize your hard work, late-night study sessions, classes, papers, research, special projects, and ultimately, personal growth. We also celebrate the support of your family, friends, faculty, and staff that helped you achieve your goal of earning a degree from Wilson College. Well done!
For your class, Commencement is also a unique celebration of perseverance. You navigated through unexpected twists and turns to finish your degree to become Wilson College alumnae and alumni. No one could have anticipated the many changes and adaptations you have faced. In true Wilson fashion, you stayed the course, evolved, and achieved your goals. I am so very proud of you. The entire Wilson family is proud of you.
You are the next generation of Wilson leaders. Now, it is time for you to show the world what a Wilson education can help you accomplish. Today, you join the ranks of women and men who have graduated from these hallowed halls and gone on to do remarkable things. Take your creativity, critical thinking, and ability to communicate effectively, live and work honorably, and work with diverse peoples to add value to your community. You have been afforded much through a Wilson education, and you have the responsibility to pay it forward by giving to others. You can make the world a better place, and as we have taught you, I hope you will be bold in your choices.
I am humbled by your tenacity, and I am honored to have served as your president. Never forget this remarkable institution and how it helped you explore your possibilities. I hope you always find your way home. Please do come back often. There will always be a place for you here, amongst the pines and maples at Wilson College. Now, go change the world for good!

All: Gracious God, we give you thanks that you are among us.
We thank you for the gifts of this institution we have called home.
Wethankyouforthefacultyandstaff,
who have stretched us and supported us in ways we never expected.
We thank you for roommates, sports, clubs and activities,
where we made friendships, learned about others and ourselves.
We thank you for the times we stumbled and fell,
and someone was there to pick us up.
We thank you for the opportunities we had to support others in times good and bad,
for the chance to laugh, and to cry.
We give you thanks for your presence through it all.
As we journey on from this place, may your Spirit remain with us. Amen

from the dean of the facultyDear Graduates,
This is such a proud moment for you, your family, friends, and of course, your Wilson community. The best part of the pride you feel today is that you get to keep it for the rest of your lives. Your accomplishments, driven by your perseverance before and during a global pandemic, are the result of the best investment that you and we have made in your future. Your Wilson education, those rigorous requirements you met, now distinguish you from other graduates around the country.
Today, and for the rest of your days, don’t lose sight of the big picture, what your tailored and intentional education does for you. Studying diverse subjects has helped you develop an ordered mind, and each subject area contributes in a slightly different way. You have developed good thinking habits, so you will excel in any job or task, making you a better employee, colleague, spouse, parent, and citizen. You have learned how to think for yourself. The body of knowledge you have gained and the tools of examination and analysis you have mastered enable you to develop your own opinions, attitudes, values, and beliefs, not based upon ignorance, whim, or prejudice, but upon your own evaluation of argument and evidence. The virtue of sound and reasoned judgment rests in the ability to think independently, in the face of pressures, distortions, and exaggerated truths, preparing you to become a compassionate leader in your community.
As we all know, we need more understanding in this often confusing and chaotic world. Luckily your intellectual development doesn’t stop here: you have the perfect foundation to be a life-long learner. We hope you will always have the intellectual curiosity to ask the tough questions and explore the just solutions. You leave here with a sharper vision that will provide context for the world’s chaotic information glut. Today is not an end, despite your feelings of relief and accomplishment at what you have already achieved. Your future commences here.
Congratulations and best wishes,
Elissa Heil, Ph.D.

Mario CapecchiMolecular Geneticist, 2017 Nobel Prize Co-Winner in Physiology or Medicine
Capecchi shared the Nobel Prize with two others for discovering a method of deactivating — or knocking out — specific genes in mice. The technique is a more reliable method for altering animal genomes and is used in gene targeting. It has contributed to the development of new treatments for diseases in humans, including cancer and diabetes.
Capecchi also has a fascinating personal story. He was born in Italy in 1937, the son of Italian air force officer Luciano Capecchi and American poet Lucy Ramberg. Capecchi and his mother were living in a chalet in the Italian Alps when World War II broke out. His mother was arrested for her anti-fascist activities and sent to Dachau, the first Nazi concentration camp.
Expecting arrest, Capecchi’s mother paid friends to let her son live with them. But when the money ran out, they threw him out at age 4 1/2. Capecchi lived on the streets of northern Italy with other homeless children, as well as occasionally in orphanages, for five years. He spent the final year in a hospital, where he nearly died of malnutrition.
After Capecchi’s mother was released from Dachau, she spent two years searching for him. She eventually found him at the hospital. Soon after, they came to live in the United States, settling in a utopian commune in Pennsylvania co-founded by Lucy’s brother, physicist Edward Ramberg, and his wife, Sarah.
After earning a bachelor’s degree from Antioch College, Capecchi worked at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he became interested in molecular biology. He did his graduate work at Harvard University in the laboratory of James D. Watson, co-discoverer of the structure of DNA. Capecchi earned his doctorate in biophysics from Harvard in 1967. After teaching at the Harvard Medical School’s Department of Biochemistry, Capecchi joined the faculty at the University of Utah in 1973.
Capecchi is currently Distinguished Professor of Human Genetics at the University of Utah School of Medicine. He studies cancer models (experimental versions of cancer) recreated in mice and has a particular interest in the study of sarcomas, focusing on unraveling the function of the Hox genes associated with developmental and neuropsychiatric disorders.
Capecchi is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the National Academy of Sciences, the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and the National Science Foundation Advisory Panel on Genetics. Likewise, he has received awards too numerous to list, including the American Association for Cancer Research Lifetime Achievement Award and the Alfred P. Sloane Jr. Prize for Outstanding Contributions to Cancer Research.

Megan PotterClass of 2020 President
Megan Potter ’20 earned her bachelor’s degree in secondary English education. Now, a year later, she is working as a graduate assistant for Residence Life here at Wilson while pursuing a master’s degree in education.
From Hagerstown, Md., she is the youngest of six children and the first to attend a traditional four-year college. During her undergraduate career, Potter served as president of the Wilson College Student Government Association, senior class president, president of the Student Athletic Association, president of the Student-Athlete Mentor program, and was a resident assistant for three years.
Outside of the classroom and office, Potter, in her final year of NCAA eligibility, plays softball for the Phoenix. hoodsHoods are the most distinctive feature of the American Inter-Collegiate Code. They vary in length according to the type of degree held and are lined with the official colors of the institution conferring the degree. The linings of Wilson College hoods are blue and silver. The distinctive colors on the two-inch velvet trim for bachelor’s degrees, three-inch velvet trim for master’s degrees, and five-inch velvet trim for doctorate degrees indicate the academic field. Associate degree hoods do not have the velvet trim.
maceAn academic custom that originated in the 16th century is part of today’s commencement ceremony. Although not as ornate as the first royal mace presented by Queen Elizabeth I of England to Oxford University in 1589, Wilson’s cast-silver mace bears the official seal of the College.

dinksWilson’s traditional beanie cap, decorated with a student’s graduation year and class colors, is a staple at many College functions. Dinks are presented by “Bigs” to their “Littles” during Sarah Wilson Week. The way each Big sets the cap on their Little’s head is how the student must wear their dink throughout college.

pinning ceremonyThe pinning ceremony is a time-honored nursing school tradition. Often more personally meaningful than the graduation ceremony, it signifies your official initiation into the sisterhood and brotherhood of nurses.
This rite of passage can be traced all the way back to the Crusades of the 12th century. During this time, the Knights of the Order of the Hospital of St. John the Baptist tended to injured and infirm Crusaders. When new monks were initiated into the order, they vowed to serve these sick soldiers in a ceremony where each monk was given a Maltese cross, the first badge given to those who nurse.
The modern ceremony dates back to the 1860s when Florence Nightingale was awarded the Red Cross of St. George in recognition of her tireless service to the injured during the Crimean War. To share the honor, she, in turn, presented a medal of excellence to her brightest graduates. By 1916, the practice of pinning new graduates was standard throughout the United States.

from the dean of studentsYou did it! You are here at the finish line, and I could not be more proud of all you have accomplished and overcome to be at this point in your lives. One of my favorite things to do with first-year students is to walk with them under the tree where you will receive your diplomas today. I enjoy showing them where they will be at the end of their Wilson journey, and it is at this place that you find yourselves standing today.
Nelson Mandela once said, “It always seems impossible until it is done.” I am sure that many things felt impossible for you over the past few years. It might have felt impossible for you to write essays, perform in labs, and present in front of your peers and professors, but now you can look back and know that you did it; you did all of it. Before today, you may have wondered, perhaps even doubted if you would have the strength and the energy to complete your degree, and yet, you carried on to get to this place.
You did not let the pandemic define you or your college experience. The past fifteen months have not been easy, and your personal and academic life may not have been without its complications and even losses. Through it all, you persisted, you were resilient, and you have done all that you needed to do to obtain your degree from Wilson College.
From here, I want you to go forward with the confidence that you can overcome, and you can do the impossible because you are a Wilson graduate. You are standing on the shoulders of the bold women and men before you who laid the path to the tree where you now stand, ready to get your diploma. You did the impossible to get here, and now endless possibilities lie in front of you.
Your dean,
Mary Beth Williams, Ph.D.

Gwendolyn SykesChief Financial Officer, United States Secret Service
Gwendolyn Sykes, the United States Secret Service CFO, is responsible for the execution, development, and stewardship of the Secret Service’s resources and currently manages a financial team that includes budget, financial management, relocation, and financial systems experts.
Sykes is the first African American female to have served as the CFO at NASA, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Nominated by the President of the United States and confirmed by the United States Senate, she was responsible for this $16 billion agency’s financial management and health. She led more than 500 finance professionals, located across ten geographically dispersed locations throughout the United States, to develop and execute financial policies, processes, and procedures.
Sykes has also served as Yale University’s CFO, the first in that university’s 306-year history, and CFO for Morehouse College. Previous government experience includes working within the Department of Defense and in the office of U.S. Senator Ted Stevens.
Sykes holds a Bachelor of Arts in accounting from Catholic University and a Master of Public Administration from American University, where she also serves as an adjunct professor in the School of Public Affairs. She has been recognized for her achievements by Black Enterprise, Newsweek, the Today Show, and the National Black Caucus of State Legislators.

Danielle StaffordClass of 2021 President
Danielle “Dani” Stafford ’21 is a double major in health science and environmental sustainability, with minors in psychology, applied ethics, and religious studies. She credited and thanked her advisers, Tonia Hess Kling and Edward Wells, for helping her on her academic journey at Wilson. Stafford is a Residential Assistant on campus, where she lives with her cat Sammie B. She is a Curran Bonner Scholar and loves to volunteer in her free time.
Stafford, from Jessup, Md., plays on the Phoenix women’s soccer and lacrosse teams. She heard of Wilson from former Wilson soccer coach Caleb Davis. “I chose Wilson because of the small environment, the beautiful campus, and the connections you make with everyone,” Stafford said.
Dawson ZalegowskiClass of 2021 Vice President
Dawson Zalegowski ’21 is majoring in veterinary medical technology and plans to go to St. George’s University to earn a degree in veterinary medicine. He has served as a campus tour guide, tutor, orientation leader, residential assistant, and VMT mentor at Wilson. He has also participated in multiple clubs, including Archery, VMT, Pre-vet, and the Gamer’s Club.
Zalegowski graduated from Garden Spot High School, where he completed his senior year in a veterinary assistant technology program. He chose to come to Wilson for its four-year VMT program, knowing that this would prepare him well for vet school. He also understood the value of Wilson’s hands-on learning, specifically working with the College’s whippets and cats, and the advantages of its small lab sizes. He saw this as the perfect environment to develop the skills he would need in his career. Finally, he recognized that Wilson, as a small college with a close-knit community, was where he could grow intellectually and personally.

dinksWilson’s traditional beanie cap, decorated with a student’s graduation year and class colors, is a staple at many College functions. Dinks are presented by “Bigs” to their “Littles” during Sarah Wilson Week. The way each Big sets the cap on their Little’s head is how the student must wear their dink throughout college.
odds vs. evensOdd or Even is simple enough—it corresponds to what year you enter the school and what year you graduate. Typically if you enter on an even year, you’ll also graduate in an even year. The same holds true with Odds. You also have your own class colors. Make sure to wear them proudly! Odds colors are red and black; Evens are green and blue.

Katie ShankMaster of Healthcare Administration
Katie Shank ’19, ’21M grew up in Waynesboro, Pa., and is a first-generation college student. She earned her bachelor’s degree in communications, graduating early after three years. As an undergraduate, she played as a forward for the Phoenix field hockey team and wrote articles for the Billboard student magazine.
Shank participated in Wilson’s inaugural medical mission trip to the Dominican Republic in 2018. There, she helped deliver needed medical services to migrant laborers from Haiti housed on remote sugar plantations where the people have no access to even the most basic health care. She described it as “a life-changing experience being able to see what poverty really looked like. And how lucky we are to live in the United States where we have access to medical care right at our fingertips.” Shank participated in Wilson’s second medical mission in 2019 to the same region. Such experiences influenced her decision to pursue a master’s degree in healthcare administration. “I want to work in a career that lets me give back or find resources that will help people in their lives,” she said.
Shank has been serving as the student member of the Graduate Studies Council and a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, the National Leadership Honor Society. She is currently employed by Wilson as the alumni relations associate. After graduation, Shank will begin her coursework in Wilson’s newest Master of Applied Leadership program.

hoodsHoods are the most distinctive feature of the American Inter-Collegiate Code.

ALMA MATER
’Mid a group of pines and maples, Near a gently flowing stream,
Rests our lovely college campus, What a peaceful spot it seems! In the beauty of the morning,
There’s a sweetness unsurpassed; When the twilight shadows deepen,
There’s a peace until the last.
Wilson how we love to hear it, More and more throughout the years;
’Tis a balm for ev’ry sorrow, It will banish all our tears,
To her dear departed daughters, ’Tis a magic as of yore,
And within our mem’ries glowing, It will dwell forever more.
For there is no place like Wilson Though we search o’er land and sea;
She is small but she is mighty And she’s wonderful to me,
For her name is Alma Mater, And we’ll ever stand as one,
Firmly pledged to love and honor, Till the sands of life are run.
