Commencement Speaker
Alma Lopez, NWTC’s 2021 District Ambassador, continues to represent NWTC locally as well as advocate for technical education at the state level. As part of this honor, Alma has participated in the Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) District Ambassador program.
Alma’s nomination sponsor commented, “One of the things I admire most about Alma is her incredible positive outlook on life... Her story and all she’s overcome not only while she’s been at NWTC, but prior to coming to school, will touch your heart. Alma is the definition of resiliency and she is a great example for all students to see that school can be a possibility…”
When asked why she chose NWTC, Alma stated, “I chose NWTC because it was more affordable than a traditional 4-year program at a UW school and also because it was close to home. It was also a familiar place for me, as my father graduated from a welding certification program 20 years ago and the campus drew my attention ever since.”
Since being named District Ambassador, Alma has joined Atkore International as a corporate recruiter as she continues working towards her Respiratory Therapy degree at NWTC.
Most recently, Alma participated in WTCS ‘Working As One- Supporting Parent Students’ panel and shared what it is like being a college student and a parent of a child with disabilities.
Alma’s anticipated graduation is May of 2022.

Academic RegaliaAcademic regalia had its beginnings in the middle Ages. When the English universities were forming in the 12th and 13th centuries, the scholars also were clerics. They adopted gowns similar to those of their monastic orders. Caps were a necessity in the drafty buildings, and capes with hoods attached were needed for warmth. These early scholars selected the hood as the article for distinguishing various degrees by color, trim, and binding.
The use of academic regalia in the United States has been continuous since Colonial times. A uniform code was not widespread until about 1895 when the well-defined code of the Intercollegiate Commission was adopted by all institutions of higher learning.
The cap, called a mortarboard, is usually square and is the same for all degrees. The standard tassel is usually black; however, colored tassels that signify the discipline are often used. The Doctor’s cap may have a gold tassel. NWTC graduates wear a blue, teal and white colored tassel on their caps.
Gowns and hoods vary for different degrees. The Associate’s gown is usually black with plain sleeves, though other colors may be worn. NWTC graduates wear blue gowns. The Bachelor’s gown is black and has pointed sleeves. The Master’s gown, also black, has longer, narrower sleeves that extend below the knee. The Doctor’s gown usually is black but may be of a color representing the institution granting the degree. The Doctor’s gown is faced down the front with velvet and has three velvet bars across the bell-shaped sleeves.
The academic hood varies in length according to the degree and is lined with the official colors of the institution granting the degree. The velvet border or edging of the hood indicates the discipline of the degree it represents; apricot-nursing, dark blue-philosophy; light blue-education; brown-fine arts and architecture; copper-economics; taupe-business administration; golden yellow-science; orange-engineering; pink-music; purple-law; russet-forestry; scarlet-theology; and white-arts, letters and humanities.
Associate degrees, technical diplomas, and certificates requiringmore than 15 or more credits are eligible to receive honors notation.

Veteran and Service Member RecognitionSince World War I, challenge coins have been used as a way to honor, encourage, and reward individuals for their personal and professional accomplishments. A symbol of strength and commitment, these coins are given to NWTC’s graduating service men and women. The College appreciates the service and sacrifices these students provided while serving our country and their dedication to continuing their education. NWTC recognizes these students as an important part of the campus community and therefore awards them a special challenge coin. Graduates wearing the red, white and blue cords are students that are military veterans or are currently serving in the Armed Forces.
Global DesignationsNortheast Wisconsin Technical College is committed to expanding the world view and global perspectives of students by providing opportunities to interact with international students and to understand various cultures from around the world. The stoles you see with a flag motif either represent the home country of those international students who have studied at the College or the country students studied in while participating in an NWTC-sponsored study abroad trip or in an international service learning opportunity during their time at NWTC.
Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society of the
Two-Year CollegePhi Theta Kappa’s mission is two-fold: 1) recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students and 2) provide opportunities for individual growth and development through participation in honors, leadership, service and fellowship programming.
The golden Honors Stole has been worn by Phi Theta Kappa graduates for more than 25 years. The Honors Stole is made of gold satin and finished with a blue Greek letter monogram.
