Worcester has its share of creative people who, in recent years, have opened funky little stores that offer unique clothing, accessories and dorm room furnishings. Sure, Worcester has a Wal-Mart in the Quinsigamond Village area, but try these locally-owned and operated shops fi rst.
Trunk and DisorderlyThe newest of consignment stores in town is Trunk and Disorderly on Main Street, near Lincoln Square. Mainly women’s and men’s clothing, the store
sells apparel ranging from cocktail dresses to chic lacy blouses. Also fi nd footwear, jewelry and trinkets that are perfect for dressing up a dorm room or apartment. Skateboard decks and completes are also for sale, including Tasty Skateboard decks, a
local producer. Trunk & Disorderly, 122 Main St., Worcester. Facebook.com/TrunkNDisorderly.
GrimeAlso selling new and used clothing and accessories is Grime on Shrewsbury Street. Hippie-style fl oral dresses and shirts offset rough and tough metal
band and skull shirts. Handmade jewelry makes up a line of accessories, which also includes necklaces, ties and very funky sunglasses. Be sure to have your photo taken with Elvis when you visit. Grime, 356 Shrewsbury St., Worcester. grimeworcester.com.

Crompton CollectiveSure, you can fi nd great used clothing and accessories at Crompton Collective, but its speciality is home décor. The store sells vintage home furnishings, handmade decorations and other handcrafted items perfect for gifts, like coffee sleeves and the funkiest teddy bears you’ll ever fi nd. The
store also hosts classes and seasonal events, including doggie pictures with Santa in December. Crompton Collective, 138 Green St., Worcester. cromptoncollective.com.
Oh My Gosh Antiques and CollectiblesIf you’re willing to take a trip out of Worcester and dig through a less-organized assortment of antiques, perfect for home furnishings, Oh My Gosh in Sterling is not to be missed. Housed in an old, large barn house, vendors sell everything from old wooden crates, perfect to make bookshelves, with to handmade candles and sweet treats to warm up any small living space. Oh My Gosh Antiques & Collectibles, 15 Waushacum Ave., Sterling. facebook.com/pages/Oh-My-Gosh-Antiques-Collectibles/.
Seed to StemJust because you’re living in a big city doesn’t mean you have to forget the sights and smells of the wilderness. Seed to Stem sells beautiful earthly arrangements that bring together plants, stones, animal skulls and all things wild. Also fi nd artist rings, dishware and other hand-crafted items.

If the campus green isn’t enough wilderness for you, try taking a hike, or maybe a bike ride or run, to one of these Central Mass. outdoor retreats. Most trails are well marked and fairly easy to moderate climbs, however, be prepared when you trek off by following these suggestions:•Let someone know where you'll be and when you expect to return• Bring water and healthy snacks like granola and fruit• Wear sneakers or boots — walking in the woods is not a fashion contest• If maps are available, bring one!• Don't leave valuables in plain sight in your car at parking areas. While break-ins are not frequent, they have been known to happen at some places

feet. Several other short trails lead to unique, natural rock formations.
Cascades Waters, Cascades East, Cascades WestOlean St., Worcestergwlt.org/maps/cascades.pdfA network of dirt and, at times rocky, trails connecting the west side of Worcester with Holden. Several trails follow streams, including one steep trail (sometimes closed to erosion)

Worcester Kayak RentalsCentral Massachusetts has a plethora of ponds and lakes and you don’t have to own a kayak, or even a car, to go for a paddle on the weekend. Worcester Kayak Rentals charge a small fee ($35-60) for one-day rentals of single-person kayaks, stand-up paddle boards, two-person tandem kayaks and fi ve-person pedal boats and the best part is they will drop the boat(s) off at your desired paddle location. worcesterkayakrentals.com.
Wachusett Mountain Ski AreaWachusett is a full-service ski area with rentals, lessons, a lodge with a bar, restaurant and cafeteria and live
entertainment on certain nights. In the winter, Wachusett is bustling with skiers and snowboarders. Save on lift tickets when you buy online in advance. wachusett.com.
Ski WardSki Ward may be the smaller of the two Central Mass. ski areas, but it offers terrain to play on year round. Skiers and snowboarders take to the hill not just in the winter on snow, but also during the summer months with its summer terrain park – you can even go tubing! Also offered in the summer is Cyclocross and volleyball. A small bar and grill is open year round at the base of the hill.
SkateparksWhether you just want to push around or drop into a concrete bowl, Central Mass. has several skateparks with a variety of features. In Worcester, Green Hill skatepark, off from Skyline Drive, features a concrete street course and
bowl. In Hudson, about 25 minutes east of Worcester but worth the drive, is a concrete park with several street features including ledges, as well as a bowl. Fitchburg has a concrete park that offers great fl ow with street features, a bowl, banks and quarter ramps. Fitchburg also has lights that allow for skating until 10 p.m. on certain nights.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT ARTSWORCESTER’S ABOUT ARTSWORCESTER’S
ANNUAL COLLEGE SHOWANNUAL COLLEGE SHOWby Brittany Durgin
Juliet Feibel, ArtsWorcester executive director, shares why all college students creating art should participate in this year’s College Show. What is the College Show at ArtsWorcester? The College Show is a juried art exhibit of student work from across the Colleges of Worcester Consortium. This year is the 10th anniversary of the College Show and Nick Capasso, the new director of the Fitchburg Art Museum, will be the juror. He will also award fi rst, second, and third prizes, and up to four honorable mentions, all of which carry cash prizes. The opening reception is a great party. It’s one of the few events in which Worcester really feels like a college town with students, faculty, friends and family from all institutions here at ArtsWorcester.
When is the show? The exhibit opens on Friday, February 7 and will run through March 13, 2014.
Who can submit and what type of art is accepted?Any student from participating institutions from within the Colleges of Worcester (Anna Maria, Assumption, Becker, Clark, Holy Cross and QCC), in any major or degree program, can submit up to three pieces. All kinds of visual art are accepted: painting, photography, sculpture, mixed media, installation, fi ne craft, works on paper and digital art. The only limitations are size and weight (two-dimensional works cannot exceed 4 feet in either direction and no sculpture can weigh more than 40 pounds). All
students who submit art, regardless of whether or not their work is accepted for exhibition, will receive a free annual membership to ArtsWorcester. Just ask for your form and fi ll it in.
When are submissions due? Submissions will be due at 5 p.m.
on Friday, January 24, 2014. All submissions will be made online through our website, www.artsworcester.org.
Is there a fee to submit or be included in the show? No. The Colleges of Worcester Consortium and the participating institutions help cover the cost of this event.
What does it mean for me as an artist if I’m chosen to be in the show?Inclusion in a juried show is an important credential for emerging artists. Even before the work gets
exhibited, though, you get meaningful professional experience. You need to select your work, get it ready to be exhibited, prepare an artist’s statement, set your price, and bring it in and pick it up on time, just as you would if you were a professional artist. Sales are also an important professional opportunity. ArtsWorcester takes only a 40 percent commission (the industry standard is 50 percent), and
people like to buy art out of the College Show. Sometimes, the results can be even more glamorous. The First Prize winner of the 2012 College Show, Paul Kinsky, sold his piece to the newly-arrived director of the Worcester Art Museum. Now that’s a credential.

TRAVEL SMART
The Worcester Regional Transit
Authority is your safe and
reliable connection to the city
The only real way to enjoy everything Worcester has to offer is to start by getting off campus. If you don’t have a car or would prefer to take a more environmentally-friendly form of transportation, consider making use of these ways of getting around Worcester and surrounding areas.
WRTA Buses2 Washington Sq., Worcester508-791-9782therta.com
The WRTA is Worcester’s regional bus transit system. It provides safe, comfortable and reliable transportation around the city of Worcester as well as 35 surrounding communities.
With its recently opened transportation hub at Union Station, all WRTA busses can connect commuters to other forms of transportation, including the commuter rail and taxi services. All busses, including the new diesel-electric hybrids recently added to the fl eet, are wheelchair accessible. Fares for the WRTA are only $1.50 per one-way trip and a College Semester UPASS, giving unlimited rides to students for one semester, is available to students (with student ID) for $100.00.
New technology even allows commuters to get information about schedules and arrival times directly on their cell phones by either scanning a QR code or sending the bus number in a text message to 41411.
Also new are extended service hours on several routes, including later runs to and from Showcase Cinemas Worcester North movie theater on Route 30 and to and from Worcester State University via Route 3. Find a full list of schedules at therta.com/schedules/.
The bus system can be confusing at fi rst, but just taking a few extra minutes on the WRTA website can help familiarize yourself with schedules and routes to allow for a simple and inexpensive way to get off campus.
Red Cab508-340-4637worcester-redcab.com
Yellow Cab508-754-3211yellowcabworcester.com
The only way to get a cab in Worcester is by phone, so be sure to write these numbers down and save them somewhere. On a late night, after busses stop running, a cab may be your safest way home. Both services are available 24 hours a day and they usually take no more than 10 minutes to arrive. Rates are very reasonable depending, obviously, on where you’re headed.

Fritz’s Bicycle Shop328 W Boylston St., Worcester508-853-1799fritzsbicycleshop.blogspot.com
A bike is always a good investment when you’re living in a city. No gas, less traffi c, easier parking, and it will even help to keep you in shape! These three places are perfect starting points if you’re interested in bicycling. They have new and used bikes as well as safety gear and they can even help with repairs.

Many convenient stops are available along the route and when the train is running on time, the trip is fast and convenient. Be sure to check the schedule before planning your trip into the city because departure times vary.

Another transportation system out of Union Station, the Amtrak also provides transportation out of state. The schedule for the Amtrak is less frequent and more expensive, but it is undeniably a more comfortable ride if you can swing it.

If you haven’t heard, you will: Worcester is a hotspot for great live, local music. From long-haired metal bands taking over the upstairs of Ralph’s every other Thursday to free Woo Town Wednesdays at The Lucky Dog Music Hall, Worcester is alive with great music at intimate venues.

The Ship Room at Hotel VernonThe Hotel Vernon is one part historical with an old speakeasy, where it’s said Babe Ruth once had a drink or two during prohibition, and another part live music venue. The Ship Room at the Hotel Vernon, while smaller than most venues, is one of the city’s more unique live music spots with a sailing ship’s steering wheel on stage and lit-up portholes in each wooden booth. About half the time shows are free, while others ask a small cover fee. Find punk, metal, rock, ska and other loud music on many nights, and on occasion, get your feet ready for DJed dance parties. Ralph’s Chadwick Square DinerKnown for rock, metal and punk music shows upstairs, Ralph’s has played host to local and nationally-touring bands for decades. For most shows there is a cover, but always well-worth the small price. Every other Thursday at 9 p.m. Ralph’s hosts Metal Thursdays with several metal bands upstairs. Every once in a while, fi nd a band downstairs or on a Saturday afternoon, outside, during one of the Diner’s car shows. Between sets, grab a Ralph’s burger from the diner cart, you won’t regret it.Ralph’s Chadwick Square Diner, 148 Grove St., Worcester. 508-753-9543, ralphsrockdiner.com.
The PalladiumWith two different stages – upstairs being a smaller space with a balcony and downstairs being a much larger stage with both standing and seating areas and a balcony – The Palladium is a must go-to for live music. Larger nationally-touring acts come through often and some of the best hardcore shows in the area happen upstairs. Tickets for shows can be purchased at the door (if they’re not sold out) or at ticketmaster.com. A newly opened eatery, Paris of the Eighties Cafe, is adjacent to The Palladium and open during every show, selling speciality coffee drinks, sweet treats, salads and sandwiches. The Lucky Dog Music HallAlmost every night of the week Lucky Dog has a local or nationally-touring band take the stage. Every Thursday from 8:30 p.m. until the venue closes at 2 a.m., Lucky Dog is packed full when The Flock of Assholes play cover songs from the ‘80s, dressed in garb from the time with, of course, big, shiny sunglasses. It’s not just the band that dresses up – the audience is encouraged to come in their fl ashiest gear as well. There is a cover most nights, but Wednesdays are always free when a variety of bands play the weekly Woo Town Wednesday series. Check Lucky Dog’s calendar for other events, like Mister Smartass Theater and fundraiser events. The Lucky Dog Music Hall, 89 Green St., Worcester. 508-363-1888, theluckydogmusichall.com.
