PETONIA RE-DEFINING RETAIL

Page 13: COLLECTION OF WORK

Petonia was a retail concept in which up and coming local Portland designer could showcase their work in rotating displays to create an engaging shopping experience. Re-purposing and using found materials was integrated into the lighting and wall application. Interactive wall features allowed the customer to learn more about the designers as well as sustainable practices. Branding was another aspect that was explored in this studio from the logo design down to the bags to be used.

Crafty Wonderland is a quirky and fun retail environment that showcases local artist’s work and personal expression. A range of different personally crafted products are displayed within the store, which called for a variety of display. Custom casework is the main focus of this project, with attention to the detailing of cabinets and shelving units. Fun pops of color was introduced to create a lively engaging space from the street.

CHAIR 60 COMFORTABLE FRAMEWORK

The initial concept behind CHAIR 60 was to create an rocking chair that incorporated a weaving element in order to facilitate a lounge feeling while seated. After midterm refinement of chair lead to leaving behind the rocking motion, but keep intact the integrity of nested experience. In it’s final production the idea of pulling a rope material away from the frame of the chair dictated the look of the chair and the ultimate contrast of wood to rope, frame to seat, and light to dark.

OMEGA 13 LIGHTING THE EVENT

Designed for the International Association Lighting Designers Award Banquet, this centerpiece was created with the intention of using re-used and found objects. The center of the light is a sand-blasted amber globe which diffuses the light and creates a hued glow. Surrounding the center lamp is metal that has been re-purposed from air filters in order to depict interesting light patterns on the surface the luminaire would sit. The light could be disassembled for ease of transportation and shipping to the event.

LATINO LANGUAGE AND CULTURE CENTER

PROJECT INTENTIONSViva La Raza intends to be a community driven environment that exists as a refuge for newly arrived Latino immigrants seeking resources and refuge in a new country. It is a place where they can express their cultural identity without fear, and gather the necessary resources in order to fi nd success in America. Viva La Raza will establish an inclusive space for the Mexican-American community and will also establish a cultural presence where people can learn the history and traditions of immigrants through performance and celebration. Most important, however, is that the center will create a cooperative space for the Latino community to share their background through language and art, while also having access to resources, such as a career center and computer lab to develop their own success in a new country. Centered around food, dance, and family the center hopes to achieve an inclusive environment for the Latino Community in Salem, Oregon where identity can be shaped and celebrated.

COMMUNITY PERFORMANCE HALL

Page 31: COLLECTION OF WORK

FLEXIBILITY CONCEPTThe intention of the connection between the performance hall and the Outdoor Patio is that idea that it can be utilized as one larger space. The patio or the performance hall can accommodate community events such as Dio De Los Muertos or a Quincenera. The idea is that the furniture is durable, fl exible, and easily re-arranged for any type of event. All of the furniture was picked to be weatherproof so there could be a cross over from the interior to the exterior when performances occur. The west facade was adapted to incorporate a Nana wall that could be opened up to further create a connection and provide amble space for gatherings. The outdoor patio is also equip with a level change that acts as a stage for dance performances and public forums.
