The project seeks to be a response to a given problem, environment or technology advancement.

A disadvantage of the City of London is the notion that all aspects of living should tend towards the central borough(s), negating the importance and hence development of peripheral boroughs (i.e., Greater London). Polyvalence defines a chemical bond greater than two, in chemistry. Also a term closely likened to

Richard Rogers idea of the compact city, a city that “grows around the centres of social and commercial activity located at public transport nodes” (Rogers, 1997, 38). A combination of the two ideas creates Polyvalent City. Polyvalent City, seeks to utilise the strength of transport to build links between the peripheral boroughs, specifically within Greater East London.

Rail travel was the preferred method of travel studied for the project. Railway Stations are not simply dispatch facilities, but above all should be seen as major parts of our environment which have clear right to be designed as ‘environmental space’ as also is the case with our roads, bridges and tunnels. Rail Travel, in polyvalent city, acts as a catalyst to a cityscape centred on future industries, commerce and technology. As the stations are built in the Dagenham Dock area, new industries and residential areas

replace the old, derelict industrial factories of the dock.

An extension of the Dagenham Docklands Railway from the city should establish Dagenham as a modern industrial area, similar to Silicon Valley, embodied by the type of industries proposed in the masterplan. A terminus station in the midst of commercial and industrial technology further establishes the city as destination for employment and residence.

Transport is a major part of Polyvalent City. The passing Channel Tunnel Rail Link creates a special opportunity to form a truly polycentric city. Connecting the site to Stratford, Kent as well as mainland Europe.

Graphic 1 contextualises the site with the rest of London and the Thames Estuary. Graphic 2 depicts a graphical investigation into the existing public transport facilities through site. Graphic 3 investigates the subterranean High speed rail

link piercing through the site. Graphic 4 presents a detailed analysis of major road links through site. Graphic 5 identifies and splits key industries into 5 major zones.

We were given the word ‘Worship’, open to interpretation, we were encouraged to define our own brief. I decided to investigate further the notion of Iconography in architecture. Stemming from the belief the church (or temple) is seen as iconic in religion. Religious architecture, however, has been replaced by buildings that celebrate the new ‘religion’ – consumerism. The places of worship are now

places of consumerism, the shopping mall, the museum, exhibitions etc. I have designed a building that represents the height of consumerism, a place where finance is controlled, manipulated and monitored, a stock exchange building. The building includes an area where high end goods are sold and displayed and gallery spaces for exhibitions – as a metaphor of consumerism.

The MiniMax, as the name suggests, is an oxymoron.

In this project we were first, in student groups, given the task to investigate a foreign nation. With the location

studied, we then as individuals moved onto MiniMax. Maximum usage with minimum footprint.

I decided a rammed earth, circular form nested into the mountainous terrain, best suited the brief. This design proposal was for a 10 metre residence, complete with

amenities any normal flat would come with. A sweeping concrete place of reflection for the individual.
