sla Mujeres, or women island, is 8km long and itswidest point is 800m. His name was given in 1517by Francisco Hernández de Córdoba, who led a
Spanish expedition in search of labor to work the goldmines of Cuba.
IThe numerous statues representing women who were inthe Mayan temples of the island have inspired this namein Córdoba. The majority of these temples were probablybuilt in honor to Ix-Chel, the goddess of the Moon andFertility. It seems that the Mayans have never lived inIsla Mujeres. The island was probably used as place ofpilgrimage.
Today the island is popular for its beautiful beaches, coralreefs, temples and landscape. Furthermore, we find veryrestaurants, hotels offering a good price/quality ratio andnumerous craft shops.

The city of Isla Mujeres
The city of Isla Mujeres, with its 10 000inhabitants, lies north of the island andhas about a dozen streets that intersect.The wrought iron balconies and wallswhitewashed give it a little air quiteMexican.
Most restaurants, hotels and shops of theisland is located in this small town, whereit is good to walk outside of peak hours.
As for you who are looking forentertainment, you will not fail to makeyou at Casa de la Cultura (Av. Guerrero),where, twice a day, the music is in fullswing and where musicians, dancers,painters and other local artists expressthemselves in many ways.
In the south of the island
In the south of the island, you can visit the Tortugranja farm, a turtle farm. Giventhe rapid decline in the population of turtles in the Caribbean, the environmentalorganization Eco Caribe has taken the responsibility to conduct the breeding,study and preservation of endangered species.
Do not miss the ruins of the temple of the goddess Ix-Chel. Located at thesouthern tip of the island, on a cliff near the lighthouse, the ruins haveunfortunately been almost entirely swept away by the terrible Hurricane Gilbert in1988. However, today there are still guessing the walls and architecture. Besidesbeing a place of pilgrimage, the temple was also used formerly of astronomicalobservation post.
Finally, very popular with divers, El Garrafon National Park is a place run bybeginners snorkel for diving because of its calm waters. In the park you will alsofind an aquarium, a small museum, a seafood restaurant, cloakroom, lockers andshowers.
