“I am extremely excited aboutthe number of people who cameout in their numbers. It showsourdemocracy is working well andpeople are showing up in theirnumbers to cement their supportfor these processes.”
Cope councillor Steven Naidoosaidtheresponsetovoterregistra-tion was encouraging.
“We have witnessed many[people who] register for the firsttime,eventhoughtheyqualifiedtoregisterpreviously.Thisisinanin-dication that people want to seechangeandrealisethatsignificantchange is possible through theballot box.
“What is worrying is that wehave not seen a lot of youth come
out to register, yet this is the seg-ment of our population that needsmuchattentionandtheyouthvotecan make the difference in thiselection. Our challenge is to to en-courage registered voters to comeout in their numbers and vote inthis forthcoming election.”
DA councillor Brian Jayana-than said Tongaat was “very suc-cessful” with voter registrationover the weekend.
“Over the weekend I visitedmany registration stations andthere were no problems.
“The IEC officials have to becomplimentedontheprofessionalmannertheydisplayedtothevari-ous voters who visited thestation.

MinorityFrontcouncillorPrag-gie Padayachee stated that it wasimportant forvoters toknowvoterregistrationasalaunchpadforthefuture of the youth. However, theapathy of the youth to register asvoters still prevails.
“The MF had taken the initia-tive to assist the electoral processby conducting street announce-ments to encourage the youth toregister. Thesuccessofencourag-ing voter registration is havingpeople go out to the communityand communicating thismessageon the ground.”

GRALIO Precast — run by Dur-ban businessman Jay Singh, who is at the centre of contro-
versy although not directly implicatedin themalldisaster—hadarranged le-gal counsel for itself and its employeeRonniePillay, aswell as forSingh’s sonRavi Jagadasan; for Singh’s wife Shi-reen Annamalay, for the health andsafety consultant; and for the mall de-veloper Rectangle Property Invest-ments (owned by Jagadasan).
Alargeportionofthemall,compris-ing of three storeysmeant for parking, camecrashingdownonNovember 19last year, killing two people and injur-ing 29.
Chair of the inquiry PhumudzoMaphaha addressed Gralio’s appoint-ed advocate, Saleem Khan, pointingout that he would have a conflict of in-terest.
“This is the first commission inwhich I have presided where this hashappened. You are representing theemployer, employee, the contractorand the developer. I find it challengingthatthesamegroupofattorneysrepre-sentmultiplepartieswhowillbe impli-cating each other.
“Gralio [Precast] has taken the op-portunity to represent everyone, which Iwant to ironout. This commis-sion cannot have various parties rep-resentedbythesamepeople.Iammak-ing a ruling on that. We all know howthe game works,” said Maphala.
Khan said he did not see his repre-sentationofPillayasapotentialconflictof interest, but consented to Pillay be-ing represented by the Department ofLabour in the interest of “expediting
this matter as quickly as possible”.JustmomentsafteracceptingPillay,
the representative fromLabour’s legaldepartment, Liepollo Monaheng, re-quested that Lennie Samuel — whosits on the commission’s three- manpanel — be removed, claiming hispresence on the commission wouldprejudice Pillay.
“It was Samuel who initially took astatement from Pillay shortly after themall collapse. He is privy to informa-tion. He must recuse himself from thecommission,” said Monaheng.
Today Monaheng is expected topush this position although Maphahais expected to largely resist.
ItisbelievedPillay’stestimonyiskeyto understanding why the mall col-lapsed and ultimately who should beheld responsible.
Pillay was interviewed the eveningof the collapse and told The Witnessthat he had been standing at the edgeof the top floorwhen it collapsed, forc-ing him to dive into an intermediatefloorastheslabbeneathhisfeet fell.
“Iwas falling, Idoveunder-neath onto another plat-form,” Pillay had said.
engineer report into the collapse.Gralio has netted over R2 billion in
city contracts over the last decade andhas in thepastbeenaccusedofdeliver-ing sub-standard work.
The Manase Forensic Report com-missioned by the province to interro-gate low-cost housing projects in Dur-ban and released last year found thatbuilding by Gralio was deemed “dan-gerous”. Singh, who spoke to TheWit-ness just two weeks prior to the mallcollapsing, denied the claim and chal-lenged the veracity of the report.
The commission continues at theTongaat municipal building from9 am.

PC Training and Business College’smandate is to provide a gateway
to a better life. But looking backover the past two decades or so,the college’s legacy goes a lot
deeper than this. Yes it is true, through education, PC Trainingand Business College is giving in-dividuals the means to improvetheir lives. However, through thismandate and various other ini-tiatives, the college is also puttingits shoulder behind the govern-ment’s efforts to build a betterSouth Africa for all.
Through its efforts to make educa-tion available to all, the college’scampuses are strategically locatedin town and city centres whichare easily accessed by students. This has assisted with the rejuve-nation and renovation of manyof our city centres as PC Trainingand Business College revamps oldcity buildings to accommodate itsstudents in comfortable and mod-ern facilities. PC Training and Business Collegeis a homegrown private tertiaryinstitution with its roots firmlyplanted in KwaZulu-Natal. Thecollege opened its doors 24 yearsago as a computer training cen-tre in Tongaat with one thing inmind, to bring affordable tertiaryeducation to all South Africansfrom school leavers and adults tothe employed and unemployed.During this time, the college hasgrown exponentially and now hasits head office in Durban’s citycentre with 70 campuses country-wide. It has educated more than150 000 learners in its core facul-ties; Economic and ManagementSciences and Information andCommunication Technology.
With its rapid expansion, the col-lege has fine-tuned its educa-tion offering by providing cuttingedge learning technology in theform of a tablet PC for all its stu-dents. The tablet has transformedthe way students engage withtheir lecturers and the college, from the application processright through to the teach-ing and learning process.Students now have ac-cess to e-libraries andpre-loaded learn-ing material em-powering themto draw from awider range ofresearch materialfrom all over theworld.
Lectures are re-corded and up-loaded onto theinternet for fu-ture referenceand studentshave access tofellow learnersthrough onlinewebinars andchat rooms locally and interna-tionally. With further investmentin ICT infrastructure to supportthe PC tablets, PC Training andBusiness College has created a‘smart’ college that offers freeWIFI and data access across cam-puses countrywide. This has allbeen provided with little extra
stream of educational systems inboth developed and developingcountries. This growth has been
stimulated in part by the inter-est among lecturers and trainersin the use of new, Internet-basedand multimedia technologies, andalso by the recognition that tra-ditional ways of organizing edu-cation need to be reinforced byinnovative methods, if the funda-mental right of all people to learn-ing is to be realized.
Two main factors have led to anexplosion of interest in distancelearning: the growing need forcontinual skills upgrading and re-training; and the technological ad-vances that have made it possibleto teach more and more subjectsat a distance.
Faced with new training demandsand new competitive challenges,
many institutions need to under-take profound changes in terms ofgovernance, organisational struc-ture and modes of operation.
To study at mLearning Academy, you need to have online access via3G, Wi-Fi, at home or at work oran internet cafe. If you are regis-tering for a full qualification youwill also receive a free Tablet PCwith most of your learning materi-als pre-loaded and ready for use.
The Institute took this project astep further by opening up twoTuition Centres in Umhlanga andTongaat respectively thus makingit accessible for students register-ing for Distance Learning to havesupport in the form of careerguidance and tuition. YOUR home can eat up a large chunk ofyour monthly income.Electricity, water, home entertainment
and maintenance all cost a lot and should bemanaged to prevent these expenses from becoming a financial burden.
Consumers often fail to realise what a bigdifference a real effort can make to their electricity bill and overall budget. This includesswitching off the TV when nobody is watchingit, turning off lights, unplugging the TV, cellphone charges and computers, when not in
use, as well as using energyefficient appliances and washing clothes in cold water andlimited use of tumbledryers.
Saving water can also make a sizeable difference to your monthly utility bill.
You can save water by fixing leaking tapsas soon as they start dripping, using grey(used) water to water the garden and takingshorter showers instead of long showers orbaths.
Home maintenance does not have to bea huge annual expense if you do some upkeepevery month. Fill up cracks, keep the poolclean during the winter months and stay incontrol of your garden to ensure that one big
storm does not cause havoc with your finances.
Another expensethat fewconsumersconsider is home entertainment.
You must decide if you really want to buythe most expensive satellite bouquet or if youcan be entertained in any way by opting fora cheaper one with fewer channels.
Also shop around for cheaper packages atDVD shops to rent movies and games for less.
Saving on financial servicesBanking, credit and insurance make up a
big part of every consumer's budget. But alltoo often South Africans simply shrug and say"that's life" when they see how much banks
charge to handle their money or give themcredit or when their insurance premiums increase. Keep an eye on your banking fees andif your bank becomes too expensive, shoparound for another bank.
Talk to your bank to find out if you are subscribed to the best package it offers. Use thebank's automatic service to pay your bills. Paya little bit extra into your mortgage everymonth to pay your home off sooner and saveon interest. If your use your credit card, ensurethat you pay off the balance every month toavoid paying punitive interest charges. Orkeep a positive balance in your card accountto earn high interest.

DURBAN will be taken to the extremewhen the aweinspiring action sports athletes of Nitro Circus unleash their uniquedeathdefying moves at Moses MabhidaStadium on Wednesday, February 19 aspart of their first South African tour.
Led by legendary action sports star andNitro Circus founder Travis Pastrana, theNitro Circus Live crew consist of 40 of theworld’s best action sports athletes, whodefy the laws of gravity with innovativefreestyle motocross, BMX and skateboarding aerial antics off their multimillion dollar set and famous 50foot high Nitro Gi
gantARamp.The heartstopping show also includes
thecrewpushingtheboundariesonskates, scooters and a range of crazy contraptionsincluding a drinks cooler, Barbie car, toytrike, shopping trolley and bodyboard. Theevent is, in essence, perfection withinchaos.
Speaking exclusively to Coastal, AaronFotheringham arguably the most phenomenal and compelling of the athletes said: “It’s going to be unlike anything SouthAfrican fans have ever seen before.”
Nitro Circus originated as a small DVDseries filmed in Pastrana’s Maryland backyard and rapidly evolved into a successfulMTV show and later a feature film. NitroCircus Live was launched in 2010 and hassince captured the imagination of fansworldwide with a string of sellout showsand recordbreaking crowds.
Fresh off wrapping up their first NorthAmerican tour by celebrating the 100th
global show in Anaheim, the starstuddedcrew will finally make their much anticipated South African debut, with the Durban show sandwiched between performances in Cape Town (February 15) andJohannesburg (February 22).
Fotheringham said they are relishingtheir maiden tour to South Africa and theDurban event in particular as it’s alwaysbeen one of their dream destinations. “I’msuper excited to come to SA and the warm, coastal town of Durban sounds good tome. I love marking places I’ve been to offmy map and Africa is definitely next on mylist. We all love going to different countriesand seeing how the crowd responds to theshow it’s always lots of fun.”
Fotheringham, affectionately knownas Wheelz, is the world’s preeminentwheelchair motocross athlete. The 22yearold was born with Spina bifida, a birthdefect of the spinal cord, which resulted inhim having no usage of his legs, and endeavours to change the world’s perception ofpeople in wheelchairs by doing nighimpossible stunts.
The daredevil holds the distinction ofbeing the first person to successfully perform a wheelchair backflip (July 13, 2006),double backflip (August 26, 2010) andfrontflip (August 25, 2012).
Wheelz admits the crew’s success hasexceeded their expectations and feels it’s
the perfect time to introduce their crazyantics to South African supporters.
“When it [Nitro Circus Live] first started, I don’t know if we ever expected it togrow so big. In the past couple of years, wehave toured Australia, New Zealand, Europe, China and North America, so the timeis definitely right to bring the show toSouth African fans for the first time,” hesaid.
The Las Vegas native credited thecrew’s versatility and ability to amalgamate their skills as key to their appeal andsuccess. “You don’t usually see the world’sbiggest tricks in FMX [freestyle motocross], BMX, WCMX [wheelchair motocross] and skate all in one place, but somehow with these shows, we have managedto gather all of the gnarliest and mostskilled athletes and brought them into oneshow,” said Wheelz.
While playing his cards close to hischest, Wheelz vowed that Durban fans arein for a number of surprises, with the crewplanning to unveil unique tricks at MosesMabhida Stadium.
“The best part about a Nitro Circus Liveshow is it changes every single time we goout and perform. We’ll definitely havesome special new tricks for South Africanfans, but you’ll have to come out and seethem for yourself.”
Aside from thrilling spectators, the
crew also aim to help boost interest in action sports in South Africa through theirthree events. “We love bringing more attentiontotheactionsportssceneandIpersonally love to give WCMX more exposure,”concluded Wheelz.
