RI President-elect Gary C.K. Huang chose Light Up

Rotary as his theme for 2014-15. Huang was

inspired by the teachings of Chinese philosopher

Confucius who said: "It is better to light a single

candle, than to sit and curse the darkness."

"There are so many problems in the world, so many

people who need help. Many people say, 'There's

nothing I can do.' So they sit there doing nothing.

Meanwhile everything stays dark," Huang told the 537 district

governors and their spouses and partners who are attending the 2014

"The Rotary way is the Confucius way. The Rotary way is to light a

candle. I light one, you light one, 1.2 million Rotarians light one.

Together, we light up the world," said Huang, who is a member of the

Rotary Club of Taipei in Taiwan.

"How you Light Up Rotary is up to you," Huang said. "You know where you are strong, you know what

Rhett Gardener reports…………. I attended on the Mamelodi East SAPS station on 3 June to see Sgt Nozizwe Gwebu with Constable Katlego Mmela. There was a cold front and it was bitterly cold. I handed over the Rotary e-Club of SA D9400 blankets that I had collected from Liana. Sgt Gwebu was, on behalf of the Children's' Shelter so very grateful. The gift could not have been more timely! Cst Mmela took the attached picture of the handover in front of the Police station. Sgt Gwebu undertook to send pictures of the children in the Court- sanctioned "place of safety' with the Rotary gift.

Rotary be praised - Rotary makes a difference.

Club members are recognized for their excellent service in

Rotary for various reasons.

At the 4th Annual district conference over the long weeks in SA, DG Anneas Balt handed out

several certificates and awards and even although our club is new, we achieved a great deal.

Annemarie Mostert, Sue Paget, Mark Doyle, IPDG Anneas Balt and Shirley Downie received

recognition from Marion Bunch of the Rotary Family Health Day programme (certificate and

trophy). The club received a certificate as well.

Annemarie received the Excellence Award and Shirley received the Service Excellence Award.

In addition, Shirley was presented with a District Paul Harris Sapphire (her third) by

DG Anneas.

Our club also received the Rotary

International Presidential Citation - an

incredible achievement considering our

club was only officially chartered on

5 March this year.

We also received the District Service

Excellence Award with Merit.

Congratulations everyone and thanks for

all your hard work, dedication and

loyalty - not only to Rotary International

but to all the community members whom

we serve.

DISCON 9400

EXHIBITION DIPLAY

There were 12 exhibitors at the 4th

annual conference at The Ranch and

our display was excellent….well done

to Annemarie and Trevor (and I am

sure that Hans helped as well) with

putting it up.

Conference delegates were amazed at

the number of brilliant projects that we

have undertaken.

PDG Shirley Downie was nominated by Pres. Kanthan Pillay for

the Council of Legislation Representative position. The clubs

voted and the results were announced at Discon. Shirley will represent

D9400 and PDG Frances Callard is the alternative representative.

The COL demands a lot of work before the final meeting in April 2016,

in Chicago where 536 district representatives meet and deliberate on

all the proposals made worldwide.

Clubs are invited to make suggestions of how to do things differently

and if the District agrees to the clubs’ proposals, then this goes

through to RI and voted upon internationally.

GETS Training in Ghana

Shirley has been invited by Rotary International to be a trainer at

the Governor Elects Training Sessions in Accra in September

2014.

Shirley will also attend the RI Institute in Ghana as the Rotary Public

Image Coordinator for Southern Africa...she serves her 3rd and final

year in this post.

ceived over 150 containers from Texas with at least

40,000 in each container.

receive a donation) for schools, libraries, prisons, nursery

schools, universities etc.

Call Shirley (083 308 0042) or email

Govenant Garden Estate youngsters enjoy the books.

There are 32 youngsters in the estate now but there are

plans to have 96 in the future.
