What is a Blepharoplasty?The blepharoplasty procedure reshapes eyelids by removing and repositioning excess skin or reinforcing the lid’s surrounding muscles and tendons. The procedure is performed through incisions along the natural fold of the eyelid. Blepharoplasty can be performed on both the upper and lower eyelids, depending on the nature and severity of the condition.

Most patients opt for blepharoplasty because of excess upper eyelid skin that hangs down over the eyelashes, blocking the outer and upper parts of the visual field. By removing this skin, patients can experience improved vision along with the appearance of brighter, more open eyes.

Patients may also opt for blepharoplasty for cosmetic reasons. Lower eyelid blepharoplasty is almost always done for cosmetic reasons to remove the look of bags or sagging under the eye.

The Blepharoplasty ProcedurePrior to surgery, patients may receive lab testing or a medical evaluation. Patients should stop smoking well in advance of surgery and avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and herbal supplements. This will help improve post-operative healing and diminish surgical risks.

During the procedure, general anesthesia or intravenous sedation will be used to ensure that you’re comfortable. For upper eyelid blepharoplasty, the incisions will be made within the natural crease of your eyelid, allowing the

removal of excess skin and/or the tightening of muscles and tissue.

For lower eyelid blepharoplasty, an incision will be made just below the lower lash line or hidden inside the lower eyelid, which is known as a transconjunctival incision.

The incisions will then be closed with removable or absorbable sutures, skin adhesive or surgical tape. The operation generally takes about one hour to complete, and most scarring will be concealed after healing.

Your eyes will likely be lubricated after surgery. Oral medications will help with pain and discomfort. Your surgeon will also prescribe an antibiotic ointment to prevent infection.

Swelling and bruising may be present for a week or two following surgery, and for the first ten days after the procedure you should avoid wearing makeup and using contact lenses. Strenuous activities such as lifting, bending and exercise should be avoided until about three weeks after surgery.

Am I a candidate for Blepharoplasty?The best candidates for blepharoplasty are in good general health without serious eye conditions, illnesses or medical conditions that can impair the healing process. Patients should preferably be non-smokers.

What is Latisse?Latisse is the first and only FDA-approved prescription treatment for hypotrichosis — another name for having inadequate or not enough eyelashes. If your lashes are thin, lightly colored or sparse, Latisse may be able to help you grow them longer, thicker and darker.

Botox® Cosmetic

What is Botox?Botox Cosmetic (botulinum toxin A) is a purified protein that temporarily improves the look of moderate-to-severe frown lines and wrinkles in adults under 65. Botox is administered by a healthcare professional as a simple, nonsurgical treatment injected directly into the facial muscles.

How does it work?Persistent lines and wrinkles are formed by the repeated contraction and movement of muscles in the face. Botox works by blocking nerve impulses to the injected muscles. During the procedure, a very small amount of Botox will be injected into specific muscles and problem areas, blocking nerve impulses to these muscles and paralyzing activity to give skin a smoother appearance and improve the look of lines and wrinkles.

After treatment, the overlying skin remains smooth and unwrinkled, and untreated facial muscles contract in a normal fashion. The entire procedure takes only a few minutes, and patients see full results in three or four days. The effects will fade gradually over three to five months, but a simple repeat treatment can maintain the desired result.

Injectable Facial Fillers

What are facial fillers?Injectable facial fillers, such as Juvederm®, are smooth gels made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the skin. When injected directly into the skin, fillers can help add volume and hydration, soften deep folds and reduce wrinkles around the eyes and nose. They can also be used to plump lips and fill in hollow places or scars on the face.

How does it work?During a treatment session, the filler is injected directly into the skin to restore volume and smooth the appearance of facial wrinkles and folds, including smile lines and the creases that run from the bottom of your nose to the corners of your mouth. Although anesthesia is not required, some medical professionals may use a topical anesthetic to numb the treatment area first.

The procedure takes about 15 minutes and results are immediate with minimal recovery. However, all hyaluronic acid facial fillers are eventually absorbed by the body, causing results to fade in six to nine months. Repeat treatments can help maintain this younger look.
