Classroom Norms
How to function in this cooperative environment
Welcome! I’m really excited to meet you!
Who am I?
● I’m 30, I grew up in midtown sacramento ● I have a BA and Credential, TESOL and Certifications from
Sacramento State. ● I have been teaching for 4 years, K-12 ● I lived in South Korea ● I’m married and have 2 cats
What do I do?
My hobbies are: Star Wars, Theater, Competitive Strategy Gaming, Reading and Teaching (OMG, my job is my hobby?? Wut??)
I have been told…
That my class is enjoyable. In the past, I have had a really awesome time with my students, and classtimes full of laughter and lively discussion. I’m excited to enjoy this with you too!
Let’s look at some norms to follow so we can have the same amazing learning time (that doesn’t suck).
When you come in…
1. Don’t be loud and crazy. My classroom is a peace-place. 2. Put your phone in your holder, unplug and take your
chromebook. 3. You have 5 minutes to do warm-ups in Google Classroom and
relax and transition into classtime. When the timer goes off, we will begin.
Our Google ClassroomOur classroom runs on google.
When you come in, you will take a chromebook unless there is a sign on the cart telling you not to.
Only take the number of the chrombook you are assigned. If you take someone’s chromebook by accident return it to them. If it becomes a habit, it will affect your citizenship grade,
Chromebook Protocol
Getting your chromebook:
1. Unplug the chromebook, slide it from its slot.
Returning your chromebook:
1. Pull up the plug so it is out of the way, slide chromebook in, and plug in chromebook
NOBODY MAY LEAVEUntil the chromebooks are returned properly and plugged in. It is ALL of our responsibility to look after our classroom tools.
Gaming
While gaming on your chromebook may be tempting, I can see everything you do on your chromebook from an admin account, and you can’t delete it.
If you are caught gaming, you will be given some awesome extra homework about gaming! I’ve got some great articles about browser systems.
Chromebook Safety and Maintenence
DO:
Treat your chromebook as a treasure.
DON’T:
Slam its cover, grab it by the screen, pry out the keys, adjust the default settings, mess with the screens.
CONSEQUENCES:
You will be charged for any damages that incur on your time. I will check the admin account and charge you.
Cell Phones
You must place your cell phone in the hanger. If you do not have your cell phone or are using the charging station, you must put an index card in your numbered slot. I will mark you absent if you do not put your phone up. NO EXCEPTIONS.
We will have moments in class where you may use your phone ONLY with my express permission
Headphones: Some friendly meme-assisted reminders of what is NOT ALLOWED IN CLASS! Enjoy!
Food and Starbucks
Touching/Taking Other People’s Things/Person...
Throwing, Wrestling, Poking, Fighting, Roughhousing
Conduct
Civility:
Treat all civilly and with respect at all times, or you may leave immediately without warning and talk to the VP.
Speaking:
Raise hands unless you have permission to call out. Do not host side conversations when it is not appropriate, DO NOT speak over me.
Consequences
1. Interference/Talk2. Call/Email Home3. VP intervention4. Saturday School
Continued Offenses = More homework on Ethical Conduct.
These things ALL affect your citizenship grade and will be made clear to the folks at home and to the VP. If you want to pass my class, you must conduct yourself in a professional manner.
CitizenshipI take citizenship very seriously (Even though it is not a graded assignment). PARTICIPATION CREDIT goes into citizenship for an “O” and will be counted toward that goal. “S” are good too, if you are a quiet individual who keeps up in our classroom community. .
You will be given a “NI” for gaming and other disruptive, non-peaceful behaviors, along with a comment on your report card and a helpful call home. I will be giving extra homework for “NI” citizenship grades.
The same will be given if a “U” happens. “U”s are for bullying, fighting, heavy disruptive behavior and property damage. A “U” will result in VP conference.
What you needIt is RECOMMENDED you have a notebook and a writing implement... You MAY NOT take notes on the chromebook without an accommodation. I will conduct periodic notebook checks. NOTHING will be turned in from this notebook, it will keep track of notes and skills and blasts that are necessary for the test. There is a VERY GOOD CHANCE you can use your notebooks on a test. (this is also a good place to doodle).
Grading and Late WorkFormatives/Summatives:
The assignments are broken into Formatives and Summatives. Formatives are 20% of your grade and Summatives are 80%. It is important you do BOTH as they balance each other out in the gradebook. Don’t skip them!It WILL affect your grade.
Practice/Mastery:
Some assignments are practice, some are targeted- mastery based. Practice assignments are necessary, but won’t be entered in the gradebook. Mastery assignments will. This is up to my own discretion, you will not be alerted as to which assignments are going in the gradebook. As we all know, practice makes
perfect, so don’t opt out!
StudySync! 1. Blast In Class(In your notebooks) 2. Notes(Also in your notebooks) 3. Supplements
(fun!)4. Fast
Formatives(Less Fun)
5. Comprehension6. Think7. 100 Words Write-ups 8. Vocab
How much do you think we get paid for this?
Not enough… sadly.
StudySync can be super… well… you know. I work really hard to make it more fun by breaking things up, getting up and moving, listening instead of reading, and finding fun videos and documentaries to help with the material. I’m actually a huge fan of the Sync material, its all about how you present it!
Day 5: The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
Watch: Short bio of Henrietta Lackshttps://www.biography.com/people/henrietta-lacks-21366671Listen: To the story in StudySync Watch SyncTV and Discuss: Are our cells “us” if they have a life of their own? How are cells and people different? Do we have a responsibility to Henrietta? What kind? How is this story similar to Frankenstein? Different? Notes/Questions: Technical Language in SS
Henrietta Lacks was an African American woman whose cancer cells were the source of the HeLa cell line, the first immortalized cell line and one of the most important cell lines in medical research. An immortalized cell line will reproduce indefinitely under specific conditions, and the HeLa cell line continues to be a source of invaluable medical data to the present day.
Study Sync Work
ALERT: NO LATEWORK WILL BE ACCEPTED IN STUDY SYNC WITHOUT AN EMAIL FROM A PARENT.
You will have 3-5 days to do a Study Sync assignment, with the exception of Fast Formatives. These Sync assignments (Not FFs) can be sent back during Flextime, In-Class work time, or after school on some days. Take advantage of that!
My Mock Planner/Absent WorkIf you are absent, it is YOUR responsibility to:
1. Check the Mock Planner on the Website. I will not tell you what we did, you have to do that yourself! a. What is the Mock Planner Ms. Storrs?
2. Complete any warm-ups or SyncWork at your own pace… remember NO LATEWORK in Sync.
NOTE: Excused absences or emails from parents = Excused from group work and in class work ONLY
Sticky Note System
If you believe there has been a grading error, as there can sometimes be when working with online curriculum, you may take a student sticky and put your claim on it. Stick the sticky to the sticky parking lot on my desk in the right block number and I will double check.
Write the sticky as it looks above. If I don’t get back to you it is because I have fixed the problem or there was no problem.

What is Wrong?
Accountability/Plagiarism
Not only do we use TurnItIn for all assignments, but I can tell when the work is not yours, especially if you haven’t been turning in good work to begin with.
If you are caught copying someones paper, recycling a paper, or copying from the internet, I will not grade your paper and your school record will be marked ON THE FIRST OFFENSE. It’s not worth it. Don’t worry, revisions are there for a reason, just do your own work!
Remind Etiquette You may only text me from 8:00 - 4:00. I will not respond after 4.
I do not respond to:
1. Questions I have already answered. 2. Questions whose answers are on the website or in
Classroom or on StudySync. 3. Questions your friend could easily answer. 4. Personal texts OTHER THAN thank-yous, absence alerts,
emergencies.
Note: My reminds often come with fun pictures.
