2 APRIL GRADUATION 2014
It is my pleasure to congratulate the graduating class of 2013. The Autumn Graduation is the highlight of our academic year as it provides us with an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of our graduates. The graduation ceremonies at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology last a full week and this year almost 7 000 students will receive their qualifications, including 73 Masters and 16 doctoral graduates. On this momentous occasion I want to encourage each graduate to make the most of their qualification. Go forth and be a well-rounded graduate who has empathy, is sensitive to the needs of the people, ensures human, social and economic rights as well as the spirit of Ubuntu. I would also like to take the opportunity to express my sincere appreciation to the University staff, parents, guardians and spouses for assisting each graduate on their educational and life journey during these defining years. This has been a truly collaborative effort and their contribution is celebrated this week as well. Lastly, always remember that the University is your alma mater. Continue to do us proud. Congratulations on your great achievement. Dr Prins NevhutaluVice-Chancellor

FACULTY OF BUSINESSDOCTOR TECHNOLOGIAE: HUMAN RESOURCESJORDAN KONDI KONDIMTECH: HUMAN RESOURCES SUPERVISOR: PROF AD SLABBERTTITLE: THE UTILISATION OF CHANGE MANAGEMENT IN NON-PROFIT ORGANISATIONS: A BUSINESS NECESSITY
Jordan Kondi Kondi obtained a National Diploma in 2006, a BTech in 2007 and an MTech in 2008. He has since occupied various positions which include Lecturer, HR Project Manager, OD Consultant, HR and Change Manager, as well as Training and Knowledge Manager.
The subject of Kondi Kondi’s DTech is ‘the utilisation of change management in non-profit organisations (NPOs)’.
In his research, Kondi Kondi investigated the possibility of utilising change management as a tool for non-governmental organisations (NGOs) that wish to transition from traditional NPOs (known to be unstructured and mainly reliant on donations and volunteers to carry out their activities) to social enterprises (which are accredited to be organised, not solely reliant on donations, and generate their own income using well-crafted operational models). In doing so, the study looked at how change management models initially
developed for business organisations could be applied in the non-profit sector. One of the findings of Kondi Kondi’s work reveals that change management principles developed for profit organisations are also suitable for NPOs; however, certain adaptations are needed to ensure successful implementation of change initiatives in this sector.
A key result of his doctoral work is the compilation of a change management model tailored for NGOs. This model requires fewer modifications than would be the case with available off-the-shelf packages.
The model also provides new practical insights and guidance on how to plan, implement and manage change initiatives in the non-profit sector. It assists both social entrepreneurs and change facilitators working for small, middle and large NGOs in compiling change cases that gain or earn the heart and mind of their intended audience.

Christoph Hikuam was born and grew up in Windhoek, Namibia. After completing his senior secondary education at the Deutsche Hohere Privatschule in Windhoek, he commenced his studies in Biomedical Technology at the former Cape Technikon in 1997.
Hikuam completed the National Diploma in 1999, followed by the BTech in 2000 at the same institution. Between 2001 and 2004, Hikuam practiced as a medical technologist in Namibia, before returning to Cape Town in 2005 to enrol for an MTech in Biomedical Technology at CPUT. He graduated in 2007 and registered for a DTech in Biomedical Technology in the same year. After three years of full-time study, Hikuam returned to Namibia to take up a lecturing position at the Polytechnic of Namibia, while continuing with his studies on a part-time basis. In 2012, Hikuam started Namib Health Consultancies (NHC) and is currently involved in health,
environmental and associated scientific services in Namibia. The subject of Hikuam’s doctoral thesis is the characterisation of the in vitro antioxidant contents and capacities of Adansonia digitata, Agathosma betulina, Siphonochilus aethiopicus and Myrothamnus flabellifolius and the in vivo modulation of the redox status as well as cancer promotion in the liver of male Fisher rats. Key findings of the study include an increased antioxidant capacity in the liver with in certain cases an associated reduced cellular oxidative stress status, which can be interpreted as a reduced susceptibility to oxidative damage. For the first time it is proposed that aqueous extracts of these multi-purpose medicinal plants may serve as hepato-protectors with a potential to inhibit cancer promotion, a critical phase in liver carcinogenesis. The knowledge generated by this study makes a novel contribution to validating the anecdotal health benefits associated with consumption of these medicinal plants.

Sheila Anne Brock completed her National Diploma in Diagnostic Radiography in 1984 at the former Cape Technikon. She completed a BTech: Radiography (Ultrasound) cum laude in 1996, followed by an MTech: Radiography cum laude in 2001, also at the former Cape Technikon. In 2009 she registered for a DTech: Radiography at CPUT. Brock has acquired vast clinical experience in diagnostic radiography and ultrasound at both state and private health care facilities.
She has become an expert in many fields in diagnostic ultrasound and is currently the Head of Department at Bergman Ross and Partners Radiology Practice in Cape Town. Brock also served as a teacher, examiner and moderator and has made an invaluable contribution towards ultrasound education at CPUT. Brock’s study, done in collaboration with the Desmond Tutu HIV Centre at the University of Cape Town, focused on an imaging modality,
compression Doppler ultrasound, used to detect deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in newly diagnosed tuberculosis (TB) patients on TB medication.
The study showed the efficacy and benefit of using compression Doppler ultrasound in the detection of clinically asymptomatic and symptomatic DVT in patients at the DP Marais TB Hospital, Western Cape. The study confirmed a higher rate of DVT in newly diagnosed TB patients than has been previously seen; the popliteal vein was identified as the most frequent location for a DVT; and the most common time the DVT developed post commencement of the TB treatment was day 10. Given the seriousness of the embolic complications of DVT, the outcome of Brock’s study has clearly demonstrated the invaluable advantage for prophylactic ultrasound screening in the early detection of DVT even in asymptomatic patients.

Amos Musengi grew up in Gweru, Zimbabwe. He matriculated at the Milton High School, Bulawayo, in 1998. In 2004 he obtained a BSc Honours in Food Science Technology, followed by a Master of Science in Biotechnology from the University of Zimbabwe in 2007. He registered for his DTech degree at the CPUT in 2010, and began his work in the field of actinomycete peroxidases and biocatalysis in the Biocatalysis and Technical Biology Research Group.
The subject of Musengi’s DTech thesis is the production, isolation, purification and biochemical description of a novel actinomycete peroxidase and its potential application in the production of novel antioxidants. The use of different bioreactor systems (airlift, bubble and stirred-tank) allowed
for the identification of the optimal conditions required for the increased production of the enzyme. Production was achieved at levels that are significantly higher than what had previously been reported in literature, thereby identifying actinomycetes as a viable source of this industrially relevant enzyme. Furthermore, Musengi successfully applied the peroxidase in biocatalysis reactions for the production of novel antioxidant compounds. The bio-economy strategy adopted by South Africa has identified the need for the development of processes for the production of industrially relevant enzymes and their application in biocatalysis reactions. This study is therefore topical and offers a valuable contribution towards the development of bio-economy in the country.

David Jonah Soita grew up in Uganda where he obtained a Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Community Health in 1998. He joined CPUT in 2006 and completed his BTech: Primary Health Care. Subsequently, he enrolled for an MTech: Nursing and graduated in 2009. He registered for a DTech: Biomedical Technology in 2010.
Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are increasingly common worldwide, and disproportionately affect people in developing countries. Within developing countries such as South Africa, the CVD traits are increasingly common among disadvantaged or previously disadvantaged populations who were thought to be at lower risk of such conditions. The subject of Soita’s DTech thesis focused on the CVD risk profile over three years in the mixed ancestry population that had been shown to have one of the highest prevalences of diabetes in South Africa and Africa in general. Soita was
able to show that the mixed ancestry population of South Africa is experiencing increasing rates of CVD risk factors, including chronic kidney diseases, type 2 diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome. Furthermore, he demonstrated that high CVD risk was also evident in apparently “healthy” subjects and subjects younger than 35 years.
His study revealed high rates of deterioration of glucose status in this population over time, with about one fifth of them acquiring a glucose tolerance worse status and over 5% progressing to the full-stage of diabetes within as short a period as three years. His study demonstrated that the presence of metabolic syndrome is a strong predictor of incident diabetes or worsening in glucose tolerance status in this population. Based on his findings, Soita recommended the inclusion of CVD education in school and university curricula, as is currently being done for HIV/AIDS.

Emma Thamahane-Katengua was born in Leribe District, Lesotho, where she matriculated at Pitseng High School. She joined the National Health Training College in Maseru for two years. She was one of three students in her class to be sent to the Republic of Ireland by the Government of Lesotho for further studies in Medical Laboratory Science, where she qualified as a Medical Laboratory Technologist at Dublin Institute of Technology in 1999. She completed a BTech in Biomedical Technology at CPUT in 2007, followed by an MTech in Biomedical Technology in 2010, also at CPUT. In 2010 she registered for a DTech in the field of cardiovascular research. Thamahane-Katengua’s doctoral thesis explored the cardio-protective properties of dietary red palm oil (RPO) alone or in combination with the indigenous herbal tea, rooibos, after exposure to hypertension and inflammation using the isolated perfused rat heart model. The main findings of the study were: 1) RPO improved post-ischaemic functional recovery in a genetic model of essential
hypertension, the proposed mechanisms of protection including modulation of nitric oxide activity and improved myocardial antioxidant defence system; 2) The combination of RPO and rooibos improved myocardial tolerance to ischaemia-reperfusion injury in a model of inflammation. The proposed mechanisms of protection included enhanced up-regulation of endogenous myocardial anti-inflammatory IL-10, modulation of the NFkB and p38 signalling pathway and improved expression of myocardial antioxidant enzymes. For the first time, having included vasculature aspects in the cardio-protective effects of RPO, Thamahane-Katengua has shown that the NO-cGMP pathway and antioxidant defence systems may act synergistically to restore cardiovascular function. Results also provide the first scientific evidence that RPO in combination with rooibos could have potential anti-inflammatory activities at systemic as well as myocardial levels, which may be beneficial in clinically relevant conditions where inflammation plays a role.

Mahabubur Rahman Chowdhury was born in Dhaka, Bangladesh, where he matriculated in 2002 at Khilgaon Government High School. He obtained his Bachelor of Technology (cum laude) in Chemical Engineering at CPUT in 2008. He received awards for exceptional academic achievement during his undergraduate studies from the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy as well as the South African Institution of Chemical Engineers. He was awarded a Master of Technology degree in Chemical Engineering in 2010.
The subject of Chowdhury’s thesis relates to the role of surface tension of the liquid on the morphology of the nanoparticles of ironoxide formed by hydrothermal synthesis. Although several authors have reported on the use of alcohol – water or mixed solvents to synthesise metal oxide nanoparticles, no systematic study has evaluated the effect of mixed solvents on the particle characteristics. There has also been a paucity of research with regard to the effect of alcohols as solvents on the growth kinetics of nanoparticles. On the hypothesis that a quantitative or
qualitative relationship between alcohol surface tension and particle growth exists, the effect of four different alcohols on the growth of ß-FeOOH nanorods was evaluated under varied process conditions, for the first time, in this study.
The unique and important findings that Chowdhury’s study adds to the existing literature and for application in up-scaling of nanopowder synthesis are:
Particle morphology can be controlled by a selective combination of solvent, solvent ratio and Fe3+ concentration. The dehydration properties of particles were shown to be solvent dependent and a linear relationship was found to exist between carbon number and the dehydration property of the synthesised particles.A quantitative relationship between growth-rate constants and alcohol-solvent surface tension was established and validated.

FACULTY OF INFORMATICS AND DESIGNDOCTOR TECHNOLOGIAE: DESIGNJOHN WILLIAM ROOMEM FINE ART (RHODES UNIVERSITY) SUPERVISOR: PROF JC CRONJÉTITLE: CREATIVE APPLICATIONS OF BASIC COMPUTER SOFTWARE: A PRACTICE–LED EXPLORATION OF VISUAL ART AND DESIGN THINKING THROUGH DRAWING AND ANIMATION
John Roome is a Senior Lecturer and Programme Co-ordinator in the Department of Fine Art and Jewellery Design at the Durban University of Technology. He teaches Drawing and Art Theory at undergraduate level and supervises students in both the BTech and MTech programmes. Roome is active in promoting the integration of theory and practice through practice-led research in visual arts and design education.
In addition to his role as an educator, he has gained recognition nationally and internationally as a visual artist and his research is based on his own creative practice. Roome focuses on how digital drawing and animation, using basic computer software, opens up new possibilities in creative practice-led research. The digital medium, with its relative ease of reproduction and storage of images, facilitates a reflective method of thinking-while-drawing, thereby stimulating the creative process and providing a unique means of reflection-in-action. The computer’s ability
to record images allows for temporal disruption, providing possibilities for exploring alternative creative solutions as well as retrospective, reflection-on-action. The study contributes insights concerning art and design thinking and makes a contribution to new developments in visual arts and design research. Practice-led research introduces a theoretical paradigm that has methodological implications, particularly in the context of the current re-structuring and transformation of art and design education at South African universities of technology.
Roome’s findings indicate that digital drawing and animation can encourage a critical and reflective approach not only in the work of creative practitioners by supporting new modes of making, but that it also has positive implications for visual arts and design research and teaching. In this regard the research highlights the need for promoting the integration of theory and practice in visual arts and design education curricula.

FACULTY OF ENGINEERINGDOCTOR TECHNOLOGIAE: ELECTRICAL ENGINEERINGSENTHIL KRISHNAMURTHYME: POWER SYSTEMS ENGINEERING SUPERVISOR: PROF R TZONEVATITLE: DEVELOPMENT OF DECOMPOSITION METHODS FOR SOLUTION OF A MULTI-AREA POWER DISPATCH OPTIMISATION PROBLEM
Senthil Krishnamurthy grew up in Villupuram, India, where he graduated in 2008 at Annamalai University as a Master of Power Systems Engineering, with distinction and a Vice Chancellor’s Merit Award. Krishnamurthy worked as an electrical engineer in India and a lecturer in Tanzania before joining CPUT, where he is currently employed as a lecturer in Electrical Engineering and a member of the following research units: Centre for Real-Time Distributed Systems (CRTDS), and Centre for Substation Automation and Energy Management Systems (CSAEMS). He has two international journal articles and seven international conference papers to his credit.
The electrical grid is an interconnected network for delivering electricity from power plants to loads. The power plants are geographically separated and the power network is very complex. The conditions of deregulation require the complex power network to be considered as a set of separated
but interconnected areas which requires a new approach to the economic dispatch problem. The existing methods and algorithms for the solution of dispatch problem are not applicable to its new structure and complexity.
New formulation of the multi-area dispatch problem, new methods, algorithms and software for its parallel solution in a cluster of computers are being developed. The methods are based on the introduction of a decomposition of the problem according to the separate areas of the network and in consecutive coordination of the obtained local solutions. The new methods and software allow fast solution of the dispatch problem and in this way control of the power generation can be implemented in real-time. The thesis outcomes can be applied for the solution of various energy management problems in regional and national control centres, smart grid optimisation, and in education and research institutions.

Winifred Nduku Mutuku grew up in Nairobi, Kenya. She registered for a Bachelor of Education (Science - Mathematics and Physics) at Kenyatta University in Nairobi in 1999. She completed her first degree in 2002 and graduated cum laude. She was the overall best student in the Bachelor of Education (Science) programme of the University. She proceeded with her master’s degree in 2005 at Kenyatta University and graduated in 2007, after which she was appointed as a Junior Lecturer in the Department of Mathematics.
Mutuku registered for her doctoral study in the field of Computational Nano-Fluids Dynamics in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at CPUT in 2012. Recently, it has been demonstrated that the addition of appropriate
nanoparticles to conventional heat transfer liquids enhances the effective thermal conductivity and the convective heat transfer coefficient of the liquids. Most industrial and engineering flow processes and thermal systems now make use of nanofluids for efficient operation of the systems. Her research is focused on modeling and analysis of the complex interaction of the nanoparticles’ electrical conductivities with that of conventional base fluids under the influence of magnetic field.
Mutuku’s doctoral thesis provides a theoretical and computational tool for examining magneto-nanofluid dynamics in engineering systems and already produced four publications in internationally ranked ISI listed journals. Her thesis received high commendation from all the examiners.
Johann Schoeman grew up in Oudtshoorn in the Western Cape Province. After his secondary education at Point High School in Mossel Bay in 1986, he proceeded with his tertiary education at the former Cape Technikon where he obtained his National Diploma in Public Health in 1989, for which he also received the Standard Bank accolade for the best student in his course. He immediately enrolled for his National Higher Diploma in Public Health which he completed in 1990.
He started his working career as a Senior Environmental Health Practitioner in the Kwa-Nonqaba Town Council in Mossel Bay, where his work focused on community development projects in former disadvantaged communities. He joined the Mossel Bay municipality in 1995 and worked as a Senior Environmental Health Practitioner until 2005 when the municipal health services were transferred to the Eden District Municipality. He was appointed as the Manager: Air Quality Control in 2010, a position he holds to date. Johann Schoeman completed
his masters degree in Environmental Health at CPUT under supervision of Prof De Wet Schutte in 2010, and immediately registered for the DTech degree in Environmental Health. His doctoral research was initiated by his observation of a lack of occupational safety practices in the workplace, especially in small and medium seize industries. He postulated that there is little doubt that the human factor is the single most important contributing factor to critical work related accidents and that personal protective equipment is seen as the last frontier in a hierarchical process to protect workers against accidents and disease. The aim of the candidate’s doctoral dissertation was to development of a risk model, specifically aimed at the use of personal protective equipment in the field of occupational health and safety.
This model enlightens the factors influencing the use of personal protective equipment and was developed into a predictive instrument that can be used to timeously identify individuals

that show potential unsafe behaviour in the workplace. In his research the candidate looked into various existing risk models in order to develop a new Factor Integration Model.
This new model consists of five components, each with its own specific related elements. The total of 54 elements of the model was developed into the Electronic Risk Categorizing Package (ERCP) that categorizes the worker`s potential use of personal protective equipment into a low, low medium, high medium and high risk scale. The utilization and efficiency of ERCP was tested in the occupational safety environment and the results showed a correct categorization of the use of personal protective equipment in 75% of the cases and in the remainder cases where the prediction was not 100% correct, the ERCP indicated the potential risk of the
individuals as borderline cases. The research concluded that the use of personal protective equipment is influenced by various factors and should not be seen in isolation and the role of both management and human behaviour should be integrated into managing potential risk of workers not using personal protective wear in the workplace.
The ERCP that the candidate developed proved to be a useful instrument to predict potential risk behaviour and the use of personal protective equipment in the occupational health and safety field. Johann Schoeman is a former Chairperson of
The SA Institute of Environmental Health of both the Southern Cape region and the Western Cape Branch. He also served on the institute’s National Council. He is married to Cecile and they have a son.
Joy Charmaine Alexander grew up in Maitland, Cape Town. After matriculating from Harold Cressy High School, she began her studies in Education at the Hewat College of Education in 1990, obtaining her Diploma in Education in 1992 and Higher Diploma in Education in 1993. In 2001 she obtained her BEd (Hons) degree at the University of Cape Town (UCT).
She joined the Department of General Education and Training in the Faculty of Education and Social Sciences at the former Cape Technikon as a Lecturer in Literacy Teaching in 2003, moving to the Department of Chemical Engineering in 2010 as a Lecturer in Academic Literacy. While lecturing full-time in the Faculty of Education and Social Sciences, she completed her MEd degree at UCT. She completed her DEd work while lecturing full-time in the Faculty of Engineering.
The subject of Alexander’s thesis is to understand how student teachers in the BEd Foundation Phase programme in the Faculty of Education and Social Sciences at CPUT perceived the link between their role as teachers of early reading, and their contribution to the public good. The study works within the framework of capability theory, which argues that professionals have a particular contribution to make in promoting social justice. Alexander’s study shows how this particular group of prospective teachers was able to link their personal upbringing and values with their intended practices as teachers of reading. This study contributes to new knowledge in that it is the first to use this theoretical framework with future teachers, and in particular in the field of literacy. A central argument of this thesis is that teacher education is well positioned to develop student teachers’ professional capabilities for public good, towards shaping a better South African society.

prepare students for the civil engineering workplace?’ In order to conduct his research, Bronkhorst adapted theory most often used in organisational and educational technology studies to investigate the relationships between different sites of learning at the FET college, namely the classroom, workshop and actual workplace. In keeping with his theoretical approach he sought to uncover possible contradictions between these sites of learning that may ultimately lead to the college not fulfilling its role of adequately preparing students for the workplace and society. This was innovative and possibly groundbreaking research that aimed to offer a new way, activity theory, for exploring the links and disjunctures between knowledge and its practice in an increasingly vital sector of the education system, the FET sector. As such Bronkhorst’s research has much to offer, not only to the FET sector, but also to vocational education in general, including programmes offered by universities of technology.
Martin Luther Gomes grew up in Bellville in the Western Cape. He began his studies in Education at the Paarl Teachers College in 1982, obtaining his Baccalaureus (Stellenbosch University) in 1984, Professional Diploma in Educational Development (Leeds Metropolitan University) in 2000, and Magister Educationis (CPUT) cum laude in 2007.
The subject of his thesis is design guidelines and principles to facilitate the process of supporting and guiding multigrade teachers and principals working together as a network cluster for collective learning, and its implementation in their classrooms. Teacher education for multigrade education in South Africa is poor, since multigrade teachers and principals involved in multigrade education have not received formal
training in this form of education, and therefore lack support. A key result of this study is the development of design principles and guidelines of a Professional Learning Community (PLC), supporting and guiding multigrade teachers and principals with the steps to be followed for them to create their own infrastructure and platform for deliberate planning and working together to share their prior knowledge and experience, as well as their experience with regard to the implementation of the new knowledge.
The study provides the opportunity to education planners to implement the groundbreaking knowledge of addressing the huge problem that exists with regards to co-operation, and how to effectively and intentionally make use of organised PLC.

Heather Nadia Phillips (née Samuels) grew up in Kensington in Cape Town. She completed her Teacher Certificate (post Grade 10) in 1980 at Wesley Training School. In 1983 she completed her Matric through correspondence. In 1988 she returned to Wesley Training College and received her Diploma in Education. This was followed by a Higher Diploma in Education from Roggebaai Training College in 1992. Phillips registered as a student at CPUT in 2004 and received her BEd (Hons) cum laude in Educational Management in 2005, followed by her MEd in 2008. She registered for her DEd in 2009 in the field of teacher education.
Historic and social change in South Africa has pioneered transformation with regard to curriculum change and has redefined the aims of teacher education in this country. Since quality is the critical factor, there is an urgent need to re-conceptualise the preparation of a generation of teachers equipped to meet the demands of the 21st century student.
Phillips’ study aimed to interrogate the missing links between teacher education institutions and what pre-service teachers experienced, and the schools and what learners’ needs were. The key objectives focussed on professional development and knowledge of teachers, delivery of that knowledge from a pedagogical perspective, and the quality of current teacher education programmes.
The findings indicated that students, lecturers and in-service teachers believed that many components within the current programme needed to be transformed as a result of the inadequate pedagogical practices used in knowledge delivery, lack of actual classroom experience, and the ineffective organisation and supervision of teaching practice, leaving students feeling ill-equipped to enter the teaching arena. These have had a significant impact on the quality of teachers who were exiting the system.
FACULTY OF EDUCATION AND SOCIAL SCIENCESDOCTOR EDUCATIONISNICOLAAS VAN LOGGENBERG VENTERMED SUPERVISORS: PROF R CHETTY; DR J JOUBERTTITLE: PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT IN LEARNING AT RURAL MULTIGRADE SCHOOLS IN SOUTH AFRICA: A SCHOOL, COMMUNITY AND FAMILY PARTNERSHIP PROGRAMME
Nicolaas van Loggenberg Venter grew up in Worcester in the Western Cape. He began his studies in Education at the Wellington Teachers College in 1996. He obtained his BEd (Hons) at UNISA in 2004 and his MEd cum laude at UNISA in 2008.
He registered for a doctoral degree in the field of parental involvement and multigrade education in 2010 after 10 years of teaching in a rural school. The subject of Venter’s thesis was to determine the characteristics of a practicable school, community and family partnership programme that would increase and improve parental involvement in learning at rural multigrade schools. Parental involvement at rural multigrade schools is generally poor due to the lack of integration of parents into the school system and insufficient knowledge regarding the development of a parental involvement programme.
In the rural multigrade school context, parents have untapped potential that needed to be identified and acted upon in order to empower parents and allowing them to become active partners in education through their involvement in learning.
Venter designed, developed and evaluated a school, community and family (SCAF) partnership programme. Venter’s study concluded that the SCAF partnership programme can increase parental involvement in learning at rural multigrade schools if certain product and process characteristics are active. The SCAF partnership programme allows utilising school, home and community capital through interaction and collaboration to increase parental involvement in learning. The SCAF partnership programme encourages learning through creating partnerships and opportunities for communication, and utilising community resources.
