JERSEY SHORE AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT

MISSION AND VISION STATEMENT

Our mission: The Jersey Shore Area School District will provide a supportive

environment where staff uses effective data-based instruction to help every student

meet academic and social success.

Our vision: The Jersey Shore Area School District will prepare students to meet all

graduation requirements and to be prepared for the next step in their life plan.

Whether it involves post-secondary education, technical training or employment,

students will be academically prepared. In addition, students will have learned to

be responsible and will be able to live and work in a cooperative manner.

RATIONALE OF THE GRADUATION PROJECT

• Each school district (including charter schools) shall specify requirements

for graduation in the strategic plan under state statute 4.13 (relating to

strategic planning).

• Requirements shall include course completion and grades, completion of a

culminating project and results of local assessments aligned with

the academic standards.

• The purpose of the culminating project is to assure that students are able to

apply, analyze, synthesize and evaluate information and communicate

significant knowledge and understanding.

The overall goal of the graduation project is to prove that all students can take an

idea from its beginning stages all the way through to a finished product and report

back on what was accomplished.

ASSESSMENT

Evaluation Panel

The Evaluation Panel will consist of three faculty and/or administrative members,

selected at random by the senior project committee. The Evaluation Panel will assess the student

presentation based on the Graduation Project evaluation guidelines. Each panel will complete an

evaluation form immediately following the student’s presentation. The agreement of two judges

will be necessary for a project designation of distinguished, proficient or non-proficient.

The presentation will be scheduled by the senior project committee and will take place

near the end of the second semester of the student’s 11th grade/junior year. Students who are

unable to present on the date must make arrangements to reschedule their presentations. The time

should be before or after school hours..

given suggestions for remediation. A new presentation deadline will be set by the graduation

committee. Upon successful remediation, the student will present the project again until he or

she reaches proficient status.

Students who do not successfully complete the graduation project will not graduate.

Dear Community Mentor:

Thank you for volunteering as a Community Project Mentor for our Jersey Shore Area Senior High School

student(s) as they works toward completing their graduation project. All students attending Jersey Shore

Area Senior High School are to complete a 30-hour community service project beginning their sophomore

year in fulfillment of a .5 credit graduation project requirement. This project must be completed in order for

students to graduate. The primary responsibilities of the volunteer Community Project Mentor include: (1)

providing guidance and support for the student(s) and (2) verifying the completion of the projects time

requirements.

Pennsylvania law requires all adult individuals who directly work with youth must complete criminal history

and child abuse background clearances. The adult Community Project Mentor working with our youth will

need to submit a copy of these clearances to the Jersey Shore Area Senior High School and be approved as a

volunteer as per JSASD Policy #916: Volunteers prior to the student beginning their community service

work. The clearances are free of charge for volunteers. Website links can be found on the JSASD website
