HISTORY of
CARROLL COUNTY OLD SETTLERS ASSOCIATION
BY DORA T. MAYHILL
It was said that James Hervey Stewart, prominent Delphi attorney, started the idea of organizing the Old Settlers Association. So that in the spring of 1855 we find in the Delphi Weekly Times and Dollar Journal the announcement that, "All ci~i:ern; of ca·:roll Cm.mty V?ho settled here prior to 1831 are requested to meet at the• court h ouse in Delphi at 10 a.m. on the. 9th day of June, for the purpose of r,pending a social day in reviewing the scenes of the olden time; and also with a view of forming a society to perpetuate the early history of the county."
The announcement was si7ned bv fo'.!rteen of the old pioneers, Abner Robinson, W. B. Givin, A. W. Gillam, James Alldridge, Daniel Baum, Sr., Thomas Stirlin, William McCain, John R. Ballard, James Odel.l C. M. D. Wilson, G. C. Saunderson, H . M. Graham, Jo.>eph K uns and Enoch Stansel. .
At this first meeting thirty-one men signed to become members of the Old Settlers Association. These will be given on anobher page. James Odell was named presiding officer pro tern and Abner Robinson was elected president for a year and shortly after he was elected president for life. James Hervey Stewart was elected permanent secretary and served for many years. In 1882 John C. Odell was elected secretary and served for 40 years.
At the first meeting a committee was appointed to collect facts which were used by J ames Hervey Stewart in his book "Recollections of Carroll County Indiana", published in 1872. At the second meeting in August, 1855, two more men signed as members.
The Milroy woods east of Delphi became the re~ular meeting place for many years, and the second Saturday in August the permanent date. By 1877 the Old Settler's meetings were being held in Lenon's woods west of Delphi along the old Pittsb11rg road. In 1901 they were held on the court house square and about 1920 after the shelter house was built at the Delphi City Park they were held there excepting for a few times.
In 1880 the oldest of the settlers and members had died and the younger generation was more interested in the new Racing Association which had just been organized here and in baseball, then they were in perpetuating the old history. . Therefore in 188{) we find in the Delphi newspaper, "Need money for Old Settlers. Business men are asked to meet at the court house to discuss the sitt·ation." The editor went on to say, "Everything in the county has gone a-glimmering - the County Fair -July 4th is a dead date - now it appears that the\ Old Settlers is about to i;.ass out of the picture."
But in the next week's paper we find an animated advertisement: ''Old Settlers - Listen to the Buckwh eat Notes - Young Settlers, see you1· Sarah and get ready to come - Grand free balloon ascension from the public square. There will be a band tournament witn ~ prizes offered. Exercises a.t Lenon's Grove with two speakers and short speeches by old settlers."
Then again in 1898 we find in the local newspaper, "Active members ol the Old Settlers Association have concluded to abandon the annual meetings because of financial difflculties." Business men took it up and an auxiliary to the Old Settlers Association was formed to finance the affair. Again there would be a balloon ascension. The editor thought it would have been a calamity 1had it been discontinued
By 1947 the programs had changed from the reminiscences of ola
1
times to moaern affairs with ta'.) dan~ing and ia11 mnsi::, someti!7les even politlclll speeches, and the crowds diminishe_d. In. 1947 Geor~e Ob~ar was president and t he Old Settlers spirit was revived wit1:1 a progi.a~ p1esent:ed by officials of the Monon ·Railroad who were boost mg th e ia1lroad for a comeback.
In 1948 when Ben Jackson wa3 president he concei.ved the id<.a of having a centennial Pro:;ram, since t hat year t he D3lph1 C1tizen-T.1mes and Bradshaw Body works were celebratm'j th e11· hundredth_ anmversaries. Then t-00, the State Historical Societv had been collectmg names of persons who owned Centennial farms in the county and it was found there were more than 50 in Carroll Co:·ntJ. Mr. Jackson at th e Old Settlers meet ing organized these centenial businesses, including th e Ker lin Elevator and Delphi Journal more than rn1 yea~s old _and th~ .centennial farm owners into a Century Club and gave Centennial certificates to each. F'rom that year the Centennial progra:ns have been contmued and the Interest has revived.
A large number of celebrities have appeared at the Old ~ettlers meetings over the years. In 1833 James W1utcomb Riley was m the audience and was called to the platform and read a lengthy poem. The Hon. David Turpie, who taught sch ool in Carroll County and had lived for a time with his parents in Madison township spoke; Sanford Cox of L·afayette who wrote, "Scenes Along the Wabash", spoke in 1871. ~hen there was the Hon. Frederick Landis of Lo:;ansport; Gen. Robert H. Milroy of Rensselaer and Prof. W. 0 . Lynch of Indiana University.
When baseball started in 1867 the people went wild over the game, so baseball games became a part of the program for Old Settlers meetings. In 1838 a game was played between the Delphians and the Valleys, with a victory for the former. "It was witnessed by hundreds of delighted admirers."
John Lathrope's Silver Cornet Band was feat1·red at many of the meetings and the Old Settlers Choir is mentioned at times. At the close df some of the meetings it was said that the roun5 people adjourned to the Milroy barn for a dance.
One of the meetings remembered by many was that of 1866. Joel Dewey who was called the village promoter, and "for some years put pep into the Old Settlers meetings", was famo:•s for a certain type of soup he called Burgout. He conceived the idea in that year of taking a large kettle to the banks of the little creek, called McCain's Run just east of the Milroy J:lome and over a bonfire cookin; a kettlefPl of Burgout for th e crowd. In the brook was also a barrell of b·:ttermilk cooling, and J oel also made a large quantity of a certain brew of tea.
Each year they came, the old pioneers and their descendants, from far and near - at first afoot, on horseback, in carts and wagons, over t he worst of wood, or corduroy roa'.is; over the Delphi-Frankfort Plank road that had just been built; the Michigan road and P it tsburg road which ihad been planked. After 1856, some could come by tr ain over th e Toledo, Wabash and St. Louis railroad; or after 1879, by the Narrow Gauge from Rensselaer; and in the 1880's from north and south over the Indianapolis, Delphi and Chicago Airline. In 1881 rrravel roads were star ted ; 1904 t he Interurban was built through Delphi. As the roads improved appearing at the meetings were carria;es an d bug<?ies and bicycles. In later years nothing but auto1r.obiles were to be seen.
James Hervey Stewart who wrote the book "Recollections of Carroll County" which contains most of the reminiscences of the Old Settlers before 1870, published in the Delphi Journal in 1861 and 1832 a· prospectus of 1his book and said th e book would sell for $1.00 and solicited subscribers in advance. So little interest was sho--7n in the book that it was not published until 1872.
One Interesting story in connection with th is book was that when George Julien, prominent Delphi attorney, was a young man attending law 1j:hool, while home for the summer vacation he wanted to earn some money. Stewart told him to take some of his books out to the county fair grounds during the fair and sell them. Julien hired a spring \rn] on, filled

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Dear F riends :
No successful endeavor is ever complet ed without had work. This can truly be said of t he Centennial of the Carroll County Old Settlers Association.
Since early Novemt er, committees have t een hard l:',t work planning each phase of the Centenni'.11, sta:-t ing with the J une 4th opening and ending on August 13. Each ( et ail has r eceived t he personal att ention of a vast num j er of committees. The whole endeavor was pl1nneJ for a summer of fun and we truly want you to enjoy your selves.
P robably none of us will be ar ound in 2055 when the bicentennial of t he Association r olls ar ound, just 2s none are alive today who attended the firs t meeting. But if the same lo:ve of our county abides at that t ime 2.s is evident t oday, it must come from our generation r:assing on to the next g ;:;neration those t hings which have maC:e us st ong. This c;;rn only be ct.one if we instill in our selves znd our fa milies a deep and abiding love for t he soil which was passe J on to us by our for ebearers. If we have accomplishe'..'! only a sm·1ll m2c.sure of this in presenting th e Centennial of the Old Settlers Associa tion, then we will have truly been successful.
It has been an honor and a privilege fo1· me to s~rve as President of the Association during t he Centennial year . I deeply appreciate .all the assis t ance which t he committees and public have afforded me and I hope you a·1.~ yo:irs have a wonderful t ime.
Sincerely,
ARTHUR M. McDOWELL

EPISODE ONE - '.l'HE CARROLL COUNTY STORY EPISODE TWO - "THE LAND OP THE RED' MEN"
FOR many centuries before the arrival of the White Men, the Pottawa tomie Indian tribe roamed the prairie lands along the Wabash and
Tippecanoe Rivers . . . The Potawatomies had acquired this territory 1rom the Wabash Indians and here they mingled peacefully with their neighbors, the Miamis . . . We see a typical village of these Red Men, as :fancy pictures it, with the braves exerting their skill at hunting while the sauaws en~age in grinding maize and weaving ... After greeting the White traders, the beautiful ceremony of the peace-pipe is presented, after which the assembly watches as an Indian Princess offers a tribute to t:Jhe Sun G<>d in the form of a tribal dance . . . Later the Red Men are seen in their sad trek to the West after their forced removal from the land of their birth on the epochal journey known as "The Trail of Tears".
EPISODE THREE - EARLY AMERICANA
I NDIANA became a State in 1816. Eight years after, on December 21, 1824. the first land of what was lat.er to hecome Carroll County was
p•irc based at the Land Office in Crawfordsville by Henry Robinson at a. price of a dollar and twenty cents the acre. On December 31, 1824, Mr. Robinson, his sons Abner and Coleman, accompanied by a Mr. Stark and his son, arrived at Deer Creek from the Wea plains. Several days later Mr. Robinson's wife. Sarah, joined them. By January, 1826, a log mill had . been erected and there were twenty-eie-ht men available for the "raising" . . . Other settlers including Daniel Baum and his family came on the scene, coming down the Ohio River and up the Wabash to Deer Creek.. Other newcomers were Benjamin Angel, James Odell, John Ball~rd, Adam Porter, Samuel Milroy, William McCord, Isaac Jackson,
Aaron Gregg, Daniel and William McCain, Johnathan Gillam and sons and many others. The first physician was Doctor John M Ewing :William Wilson d~nated land for the county seat and Delphl was plotted m 1828. It was frrst called Carrollton, but the early settlers objected to ~he na~e. Samuel Milroy, a stud~nt of the classics, suggested the name Delphi , adapted from the Grecian oracle of the same title and the
townspeople accepted it . . . Court was held at the home of Da~iel Baum ilor. about a year, then later at the old log schoolhouse at Monroe and Uruon Streets. fu. 1830 a small frame building was erected on Courthouse Sq~are . The first settlers are seen in a rousing "Square Dance" of the period.
EPISODE FOUR - EARLY CHURCHES
THE first Church organized in the County was the Methodist denom
ination and located at the Deer Creek settlement in 1826 . . . The Presbyterian Church was founded in 1828; the Baptist Church in 1829 and the Episcopalian Clhurich in 1845, while the Catholic Church was established in 1855. The Christian Church dates to 1865; the Lutheran Church to .1846; the Pilgrim Holiness Church was formed about 30 years ago, while the Bretihren Church was organized about fifty years ago ... We see an early Church scene ... Following an old custom Henry Robinson's Sabbath began at four o'clock on Saturday afternoon,' after which hour he sold no merchandise, no matter how great the need of his customers.
EPISODE FIVE - "READIN', 'RITIN' AND 'RITHMETIC"
THE fi.rst school in the c.ounty was established in a cabin built by Henry
Robmson. Sarah Robmson was the teacher She was the first white woman t~ aITive in ~he area. The frrst P;nyate school ~n Carroll County was opened in Delphi in 1858 and the origmal gra~uatmg class received its diplomas in 1872. The Delphi high school section was remodeled in 1916 and the grade section in 1936 . . . AFI'ER many years of debate, the Erie Canal was finally completed through Carroll County in 1840 . . . Many of the canal-builders were of

DESPITE outspoken opposition by the canal stockholders. plans for a railroad were instiga ted as early as 1851 by those dissatisfied with the

The Lake Erie, Wabash and St. LouiS Railroad was completed to Delphi in June of 18'i6 ... We are present on that momentous occasion and the festivity terminates with a lilting "Virginia Reel".
EPISODE NINE - "BIKES. BUSTJ,E8 AND MUSTACHES"
THE Spanish-America War had come to its victorious end and, at the
