Will the long running saga of the cham-ber of commerce building be over today?
The Okeechobee Chamber of Com-merce has not met for over two years. The organization has apparently abandoned their leased building, at the intersection of Parrott Avenue and State Road 70. For almost a year the city has been trying to regain possession of the building, which it owns.
Since 1986 the city had been leasing the property to the chamber for $1 a year. When the original Okeechobee Chamber of Commerce stopped meeting and stopped answering the phone at the chamber build-ing, at fi rst the city tried to negotiate with the chamber. Do you remember Pearl Harbor?Next week is the anniversary of the attack
on Pearl Harbor. On Dec. 7, 1941, Japanese planes attacked
the United States Naval Base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, killing more than 2,300 Americans. The U.S.S. Arizona was completely de-stroyed and the U.S.S. Oklahoma capsized. A total of 12 ships sank or were beached in the attack and nine addi-tional vessels were dam-aged. More than 160 air-craft were destroyed and more than 150 others damaged.
President Franklin Roosevelt, addressing a joint session of Con-gress, called Dec. 7 “a date which will live in infamy.” Congress de-clared war on Japan, and the United States entered World War II. Within days, Japan’s al-lies, Germany and Italy, declared war on the United States.
If you are old enough to remember that day, we invite you to share your memories with the
readers of the Okeechobee News. Email your story to [email protected], post online at www.newszap.com (click on the Okeechobee page and then on the lo-cal issues forum or follow the link from the Okeechobee News Facebook page), bring your story to the Okeechobee News offi ce, 107 S.W. 17th Street, Suite D (in the plaza next door to Brahman Movie Theater).

The last Christmas• Since 12/12/12 is the next doomsday of
the world, it is possible this will be the last Christmas for everybody? The last good cheer. Because of this, I broke out the lights. I have strung them around. I spent money on a live tree. I decorated the place outside an in. I ex-tend this right to everyone. After all you won’t get to do it again. And while you are deco-rating forgive all those who have trespassed against you, for if you don’t forgive, you will not be forgiven. Here’s to peace among all men. Now hang those lights. I would like to ride around and see every home with a string of lights. Ho Ho Ho ... Merry Christmas!
• Well if that is true then next year on 12-25-12, we believers will be celebrating Jesus’s birthday with him!
• I am too lazy to put up decorations, to be perfectly honest.
• And remember, what goes up must come down.
• Treat every Christmas—and every day for that matter—as if it could be your last. Even if the world doesn’t end in 2012, you have no guarantee how long you will be around.
Black Friday• I saw on the news there was robbing,
shooting, stabbing and fi ghting over the deals. It made me wonder if it was done to distract everyone while big stuff went out the door. I am sure we only saw some of what went on. I also wonder where these out of work folks get the money or are they using credit?
• Some friends and I went to check out the Black Friday sales just to see what all the fuss is about. It was crazy. It was interesting to see, but very sad. Some people spent the entire Thanksgiving Day in line for the chance for a cheap TV. Instead of enjoying the day with their families, they were camped out in front of a store. The lines to get out of the stores were insane. My friends and I decided there was nothing in the store worth standing in that line for, no matter how great the sale. So we went out to breakfast instead.
FPL• Florida Flash and Flicker left us without
power from 9 am ’til 5 pm Nov. 22. While they blamed the tree trimmers and the tree trimmers blamed FPL we were busy running for bags of ice to try to save the food in our freezers and fi nally had to throw out most of it. Two hundred and eleven customers with-out service means at least 211 freezers and many more since most of us have two freez-ers. That’s a lot of ruined food because of their little dispute!
• When we lose power we have always left the refrigeration units closed. Of course this won’t help if the juice is off for days rather than hours.
• Try a standby generator.• We lived in Ft. Drum and were ALWAYS
losing power up there. We would just crank up the generator and let it run. We had put one of those panel controlled things at the in-side panel box to choose what appliances we wanted running. Worked like a charm.
• Another power interruption! Every morning now...just enough to make the clocks blink and have to reboot the com-puter.
• If you don’t have an uninterruptable power supply for your computer, don’t ex-pect a long lifespan for it.
• Get a UPS. You will have those quick power outages anywhere, just enough to make your computer reboot. I would not put up with that for a second any more. That is a major annoyance.
Can the Post Offi ce be saved?• In 2006 the Republican Congress passed
a law requiring the U.S.P.S. to PREPAY $5.5 billion per year into federal pension plans, an obligation shared by no other public agency or private company. In an effort to destroy the Post Offi ce so that private companies can overcharge us, the GOP has force them to overpay billions of dollars. The postal system receives no tax dollars and has always been able to fund itself. It is also legally prevented from entering business not related to physi-cal mail. This means it can’t do what national postal services in Germany, Switzerland and Sweden have done successfully—enter the digital age. In those countries bills and cata-logs are sent to digital mailboxes on custom-ers’ computers, and virtual postage can be purchased from cell phones. The political right has handcuffed the U.S.P.S., not unions.
• I get bills and catalogs by email now—for free, other than the cost of my Internet. Why would I want to start paying for it?
Graves fundraiserThere is no way that we can possibly be-
gin to express our thanks for the many, many people who helped to make the Graves bene-fi t a huge success. The simple word “thanks” seems inadequate. Once again, Okeechobee has shown its caring, giving and compassion-ate side by supporting a local fundraiser.
Charles and Sophia “Sissy” Graves needed some help after Charles became diagnosed with esophageal varices in February. He has been unable to work since his fi rst day in the hospital over eight months ago. With Sophia the only one bringing in an income, their funds were dwindling and more procedures for Charles loomed in the future, instead of his returning to work.
Then Phyllis Stone asked for some help from some of the community folks who knew how to get a fundraiser organized and the barbecue benefi t was born.
The team of workers who volunteered to help was one of the most thoughtful and car-ing groups we have ever worked with. Every-thing fell into place, with donations for all the food, donations for door prizes and for the silent auction.
Over $4,000 has been raised to date for the Graves family and although we can’t begin to name everyone here in this article, please know that whatever you did to make this a success, it is greatly appreciated. If you donated food, or gifts, or auction items; set up, served or cooked, made tea, cut cakes, sang for the crowd, delivered meals, bought tickets, sold tickets or cleaned up the facility afterwards, YOU were a huge part of making it a successful fundraiser.
If you missed the benefi t, you can still make a donation to the Graves family by go-ing to Regions Bank and depositing money into their savings account.
Thank you Okeechobee. You are awesome and may God bless each and every one!Cathy Killian, Phyllis Stone and Micky Slayton

A capacity audience attended Church of Our Saviour Episcopal Church on Sunday, Nov. 20. The church community hosted the fourth annual Beginnings Concert, a ben-efi t event for the Healthy Start Coalition of Okeechobee.
Attendees enjoyed a varied concert in-cluding organ and harpsichord duet pieces and organ compositions by Handel. The duet Concerti pieces were by Spanish com-poser Antonio Soller and were performed by Dr. Ed Petuch from Florida Atlantic University and Musical Director Mr. Kevin Kinnaird. A number of vocalists also per-formed musical numbers from “Phantom of the Opera,” “Jeckyll and Hyde” and the Sound of Music.”
A portion of the concert also included “Americana” classics. A reception of home-baked good and light appetizers was host-ed by the Church and was a perfect time for the concert-goers to meet the performers and the staff of Healthy Start. The concert entitled “New Beginnings” was chosen this year as the title for a two-fold reason. Obvi-ously this event gives assistance to young-est members of our local community. The other reason, as concert attendees were informed, is that the Episcopal Diocese of Central Florida elected Rev. Gregory O. Brewer as its fourth Bishop. This election took place in Orlando on Nov. 19, the day before the concert. This musical event was dedicated to Rev. Brewer as he takes on the role of primary Shepherd of the Episcopal Diocese.
There was no admission price for the concert, however this event annually serves as a diaper drive for Healthy Start. As of this writing, “New Beginnings” has generated over $500 and more than 30 packages of diapers. The Beginnings concert, in its fourth year, has provided hundreds of dia-pers and thousands of dollars for the coali-tion, all distributed and spent locally to as-sist expectant mothers in prenatal services and education.
Healthy Start offers a variety of services to their clients. The services include: Edu-cational classes covering a number of top-ics—prenatal care, nutrition, counseling, infant care and parent education, just to name a few. This valuable program has suf-fered a myriad of budget cuts from Federal and State funding programs over the last year. In the long run, if these young moth-ers do not receive these types of programs, it could end up costing the local commu-nity more due to a lack of education and resources.
If you were not able to attend and would still like to make a diaper or cash donation, please call Healthy Start at 863-462-5877 or call the church at 863-763-4843 for more in-formation on where to send a donation to Healthy Start.

A reception was held in the Parish Hall after the concert. This beautiful table held great food provided by members of the Church. Kay Mueller, co-coordi-nator of hospitality for the event (pictured here on the right) pays attention to detail during the reception.
This event serves as a diaper drive for the Healthy Start Coalition of Okeecho-bee. More than 30 packages of diapers have been collected with hopes for more to come.

A local woman, who was appar-ently mad at a former boyfriend, has been arrested by an offi cer with the fi re marshal’s offi ce for setting his bed ablaze.
Maria Torres-Perez, 37, S.E. 22nd Court, Okeechobee, was arrested Sunday, Nov. 27, on a felony charge of arson. She is being held in the Okeechobee County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bond.
An arrest report by Offi cer Grego-ry Gilkey, of the State Fire Marshal’s Offi ce, stated the fi re was reported at 2:56 a.m. Sunday. The report does not indicate if there were any inju-ries.
According to witness statements Torres’ Ford Expedition was seen in front of the home on N.E. 31st Way and that she was standing outside the home shouting about someone in the home owing her $500, stated
the offi cer’s report.
Those same witnesses reportedly told the offi cer that Torres walked around the south side of the home. Then, a short time later, they heard sirens.
Offi cer Gilkey, assisted by Deputy Bart Pot-ter of the Okeechobee County Sheriff ’s Of-fi ce, said Torres would not talk to them about
the incident. Deputy Potter was the translator since Torres does not speak English.
The offi cer’s report stated that the corner of the bedding was ignited “... with a fl am-mable object such as a lighter.”
According to Okeechobee County Fire/Rescue records, damage was contained to the mattress and there were no injuries.

Okeechobee Arrest Report
Fire Marshal charges local woman with arson
MariaTorres-Perez
By Eric KoppOkeechobee News
A West Palm Beach man is being held locally on bond following his ar-rest for allegedly having sexual relations with a 13-year-old Okeechobee girl.
Travis Gregory Bartoe, 19, Pinewood Terrace, was arrested Sunday, Nov. 27, on four felony counts of lewd and lascivious molestation. He was also charged with the felonies of interference with child custody and child abuse. Misdemeanor charges of contribut-ing to the delinquency of a minor and mak-ing a false statement to a law enforcement offi cer were also fi led against him.
Bartoe is being held in the Okeechobee County Jail on bond. His total bond has been set at $108,000.
Arrest reports from the Okeechobee City Police Department (OCPD) indicate that Bartoe was initially arrested by Offi cer Lawrence Parzygnat after he picked up the child and her older sister. Sometime later, however, the older sister wanted to go home so Bartoe reportedly took her back
to where he picked her up and let her out
of his truck.
According to another arrest report by
OCPD Detective Bill Saum, Bartoe and the
13-year-old then went to a home where
they sat around a fi re and smoked Spice.
Spice, also known as K-2 and a variety
of other names, is a synthetic marijuana
that was legally sold in convenience stores
and head shops until legislation was signed
into law in July making the sale and pos-
session of such substances illegal.
Detective Saum stated that at some
point Bartoe and the child returned to his
truck and engaged in sexual acts. Both
Bartoe and the girl told the detective that
the sex was consensual, stated Detective
Saum.
Bartoe reportedly told the detective that
he thought of the girl “as a little sister” and
that “things got carried away.”
The detective went on to state that the
girl was taken to Raulerson Hospital where
a sexual battery kit was performed on her.
He stated that he also collected Bartoe’s
DNA.
Detective Saum said Bartoe did wear a
condom and that it was found in the man’s
truck.

By Pete GawdaOkeechobee News
In the last 10 years the population of Okeechobee County has not only increased but the areas of concentration have shifted.
That was evidenced by the action of the Okeechobee County Board of County Com-missioners at their Nov. 22 meeting when they redrew commissioner district bound-ary lines.
The state constitution requires that after every census the district lines for commis-sioners be redrawn so they are as nearly equal in population as possible.
Unlike some Florida counties where only the residents of a district can vote for the commissioner in that district, local vot-ers can vote for all commission seats up for grabs. The only persons really affected by the new lines would be commission candi-dates or incumbents. Commissioners must live in the district they represent.
Separate lines will be drawn for state and national representation.
According to the 2010 census the popula-tion of the county -- minus the inmate popu-lation of the Okeechobee County Jail and other state institutions -- on April 1, 2010, was 39,996. That means that each of the fi ve commission districts should have a popula-tion that is one fi fth of that total, or as close to 7,620 as possible.
At a previous meeting commissioners had discussed a proposed map with new district boundaries and each district being within .5 percent of the target population. At their Tuesday, Nov. 22, meeting the major-ity of commissioners voted to approve that map.
Since all fi ve districts either reach into the city or into the denser populated areas near the city limits, most changes were in those areas. Because of the concentrated popula-tion, small areas of several blocks each on the boundary of districts were shifted to even up the population.
Other than those changes, the only major changes occurred on the eastern and west-ern edges of District 1 in the northern part of the county. There were 392 voters west of U.S. 441 N. and north of C.R. 724 that were shifted from District 1 to District 3. On the other side of the district, 211 voters on the east side of C.R. 700A were shifted from Dis-trict 2 to District 1.
The new district lines will be in affect for the 2012 elections. More detailed descrip-tions of the boundary line changes can be found in the Nov. 22 meeting agenda pack-age on the county commission website at www.co.okeechobee.fl .us.Post your opinions in the Public Issues Forum at

Commission redraws county district lines
By Audrey DriggersSaturday, Dec. 10, marks one of the fi -
nal appearances of the 2011 Miss Rodeo Okeechobee Reigning Court. The Queens were crowned back in February and have had appearances at all the rode-os, community benefi ts and parades. These young ladies have the oppor-tunity to meet local and state elected offi cials, along with participating in charity benefi ts. It’s not easy being queen of the rodeo. One has to have personality, knowledge of the sport of rodeo and equine science; public speaking and interview skills and ex-cellent horsemanship.
The 2012 MRO Pageant deadline is Dec. 30. For more information on the pageant, please stop by Eli’s Western Wear or Southern Style Clothing. You may also email: [email protected].
The Okeechobee County Cattle-women Association is looking for past rodeo queens and their pageant pho-tos for their website. Please call Au-drey 863-801-5258 or email: [email protected] with your name, title, year and photo.
If you are interested in participat-
ing in the parade, please contact Cindy at Okeechobee Main Street, Inc at 863-357-6246, [email protected] or: www.mainstreetokeechobee.com by the deadline Dec. 5.

sued by the clerk of the court on the author-ity of the judge’s order, that actually gives the building back to the city.
To complicate matters the Internal Rev-enue Service (IRS) has a tax lien against the chamber totaling $105,467.50 for unpaid taxes and penalties from 2001 through 2009. In July of this year the long vacant building was seized by the Internal Revenue Ser-vice to satisfy that tax lien. A locksmith was called in to change the locks and apparently the IRS is the only entity that has a key to the new locks.
At 11 a.m. today the IRS will hold an auc-tion of the building’s contents. Members of the public will be allowed to bid on 14 separate lots including furniture, electronic equipment, fi ling cabinets, posters, prints, a trophy case and trophies and various Okeechobee T-shirts and hats. The mini-mum bid for the aggregate is $2,000. Ac-cording to Sharon W. Sullivan, IRS Property Appraiser Liquidation Specialist, who will be conducting the auction, aggregate bids will be taken fi rst. Then bids on individual items will be taken. During the course of the bidding a running total will be kept of all in-dividual bids. If the total of individual bids exceeds the highest aggregate bid then indi-vidual bids will be honored. However, when all individual items have been auctioned, if the total of individual bids is less than the highest aggregate bid, then the highest ag-gregate bid will be honored.
After the auction will the IRS relinquish the building to the city? When asked that question on Tuesday, Ms. Sullivan said she did not know. She was unaware of the Nov. 21 court ruling in favor of the city.
What will the city do with the building once it regains possession? City administra-tor Brian Whitehall said that question would be on the agenda at the next city council meeting. The property was deeded to the city by the late Colonel R. E. Hamrick with the stipulation that the property be used only for a chamber of chamber and no other pur-pose.
There are currently two other chambers that have come into existence since the Okeechobee Chamber of Commerce be-came inactive - the Chamber of Commerce of Okeechobee County, which is very active and well on its way to accomplish its year-end goal of 200 members and the Okeecho-bee County Area Chamber of Commerce which has been inactive. What treasures are stashed around Okeechobee? We are about to fi nd out. The Treasure Hunters Roadshow is on a world-wide treasure hunt and will be digging in town for fi ve days. During this free event, the Treasure Hunters are expecting to see over 1,200 residents bringing in their rare and un-usual collectibles. Locals will have a chance
to talk to world-renowned antique and col-lectible experts, and it’s all free.
Recent fi nds include a 1960s vintage gui-tar purchased for $100,000! Four gold coins were purchased from a local resident for over $72,000, Confederate money hidden in the walls of a residence that was uncovered during a remodel, Abraham Lincoln hand-
written thank you letter, expressing gratitude for a night’s stay while traveling to Chicago, and much more.
What kind of treasures will be revealed during our trip? Let’s fi nd out together. You or your next door neighbor just might be the next to fi nd a jackpot in the attic. Start digging now and be ready to have some fun and make some money.
Okeechobee is the next stop on the Trea-sure Hunters Roadshow world-wide tour. During this event at the Holiday Inn Express, Nov. 29-Dec. 3, treasure hunters are hoping to see items such as coins and paper cur-rency issued prior to 1965, toys, dolls, trains, vintage jewelry, old and modern musical instruments, war memorabilia, gold and silver jewelry, costume jewelry, advertising memorabilia, swords, knives, daggers, and the unusual!
Collectors are very serious about their
hobby; so serious that they will pay a lot of money for the items they are looking for. Nearly all coins, vintage jewelry, musical in-struments and toys made prior to 1965 are highly sought after by collectors. The Trea-sure Hunters Roadshow is a place where anyone in your community can connect with collectors from around the globe. Our treasure hunters make offers based on what our collectors are willing to pay. Then when someone decides to sell, they get paid on the spot and our treasure hunters send the item to the collector at their expense.
Have fun with your search. Empty your jewelry box of broken jewelry, dig out your old teeth containing dental gold, fi nd your gold coins, gold bars, etc. Gold is traded on the stock market and prices fl uctuate daily. Gold will be purchased based on the day’s current gold value.

Rotary President Lyle Fried extended a warm Rotary welcome to guest speaker Lee Jolicoeur, founder and director of Rylee’s Hope. Rylee’s Hope, Inc., is a 501(c)3 non-profi t ministry formed to help with the ba-sic, fi nancial, emotional, and spiritual needs of families who currently have or have had babies in the neo-natal intensive care unit (NICU) and families who have experienced the unexpected birth and/or death of a baby. When a family has a baby in the NICU (neo-natal intensive care unit) their lives are turned upside down and many of them have no family or friends to support them. “Even though Rylee’s Hope cannot replace the family and friends of those in the NICU, we try to help them in their time of need,” said Lee Jolicoeur. Rylee’s Hope helps the fami-lies of babies in the NICU by helping them with some basic fi nancial needs such a gro-ceries, gas, transportation (bus passes), and emergency lodging. More important than the physical help Rylee’s Hope provides spiritual
and emotional support while their baby is in the NICU and sometimes for many months after the baby is discharged. For additional information please feel free to contact Lee or Shana Jolicoeur by phone 863-634-6887 or e-mail [email protected].

Community theatre presentsholiday musical-comedy this weekend only
There’s a sack full of comedy, a song book full of music, and more Christmas spir-it than Charles Dickens ever imagined in the refreshingly different new holiday show to be presented this weekend by the Okeecho-bee Community Theatre.
The production, which is receiving its world premier on the local stage, will be performed three times only, this Friday and Saturday. The show opens Friday night at 8, followed by a Saturday afternoon matinee at 2 p.m., and the closing performance Satur-day evening at 8, all at the Freshman Cam-pus Auditorium on S. W. Second Avenue at Seventh Street, one block west of Golden Corral Restaurant. Reserved seat tickets are $12 each, and are on sale at the offi ce of the Pennysaver, at 111 N.E. Second Street, just north of CVS Pharmacy, or at the door, if available, one hour before show times.
A cast of 22 adults and three young people pull out all the stops to make this a Christmas gift for audiences of all ages. Set in December, 1962, the show is patterned af-ter a special holiday broadcast which might have been hosted by Bing Crosby or some other popular personality of the day. It fea-tures lots of holiday songs and carols, along with some big production numbers, comedy sketches, and dramatic scenes which cover most aspects of the fl urry of activity which accompanies this busy season. Through it all, however, the true meaning of Christmas manages to remain at its center.
Included are some hilarious hints on what to give to those hard-to-buy-for people on your list, plus a song about new techniques Santa Claus has adopted to keep track of who’s naughty and who’s nice, and a comic-
drama that explores just what would hap-pen if it was Christmas everyday. One high-light is a production number involving most of the cast, which makes a strong comment about today’s over-commercialization of Christmas.
The show stars Okeechobee’s favorite crooner, Jim Clark, supported by a cast made up of many seasoned Okeechobee Com-munity Theatre veterans and some talented newcomers. Among them are Mike Zierden, who serves as the announcer for the festivi-ties, along with James and John Garner, Na-thanael Bean, Rachel Belleville, Kelly Davis, Darwin Fort, Heather Garner, Matt Garner, Robyn Garner, Mason Heater, Erin Inman, Jane Kaufman, Blaire Law, Reuben Law, Genna Lute, Joey Marcinek, Joanie Moffatt, Tom Murray, Robert Steiner, Michael White, David Womble and Ruth Yeilding. Gaines-ville area gospel singer, Janice Andrews, will
also make a special appearance. The show is the second production of the
theatre group’s thirty-third season, which will conclude in March with a presentation of the Pulitzer prize-winning play, The Diary of Anne Frank.
The Okeechobee Community Theatre is an all-volunteer non-profi t organization of local people who produce Broadway-
style entertainment for area audiences. It
is a member of the American Association
of Community Theatre, and the Florida
Theatre Conference. For more information
on the theatre and its activities, call Ron or

South Fork improved to (5-0-1) and tossed their sixth consecutive shutout as they de-feated Okeechobee High School 6-0 in girl’s soccer action on Monday at Okeechobee High School.
South Fork has outscored opponents 32-0 so far this year and Monday they did it with aggressive offense, and control of the soccer ball.
Jody Ness had two goals and an assist to lead the Lady Bulldogs. Jaryaca Baker had 17 saves in the Brahman net. Okeechobee (1-4) had very few offensive opportunities.
Brahman Coach Sonya Smith said her immediate goals are to improve the girl’s communication with each other on the fi eld, improve their awareness of what is going on in other parts of the fi eld and keeping their attitudes positive.
“The kids get down in the dumps because we’re losing. Somebody has to lose. I want the girls to have fun out there,” she said.
Smith commended South Fork for their
effort on the Okeechobee side of the fi eld. For the vast majority of the game, the ball was in Okeechobee’s end of the fi eld.
“South Fork was really good at passing and communicating with each other. The players knew what was happening with the ball at all times,” she added.
Smith remained confi dent that her team would continue to improve. She noted the team has a tough schedule this year com-prised of Treasure Coast Schools where many girls are year-round soccer players. She intends to schedule teams from the Heartland area next year which are more on Okeechobee’s talent level.
“I feel the effort is there. We just need to work on our entire game and put it all to-gether. I want the girls to be aware of what is happening and I want them to look to see what is going on in places other than their own position on the fi eld,” she added.
The next Lady Brahman match is sched-uled for Tuesday, Dec. 6, at Fort Pierce Cen-tral.
