2020 CHURCH CALENDARS Each of our Circle of Faith Churches has new liturgical calendars available. We are grateful to Cotter Funeral Homes and Crematory, and The Reinbold & Pfeffer Family Funeral Services for donating them again this year. Please help yourself. FATHER SANTY UNAVAILABLE Father Santy will be gone this week, December 9 - 13th. Therefore, there will not be Masses Tuesday morning or Wednesday morning at St. James or St. Joseph. Deacon Cal will be celebrating a Liturgy of the Word with Commun-ion Service instead.

CHRISTMAS MUSIC CD’S St. James Choir produced their own original music CD last year. On it are full choir renditions, instrumentals, and harp selections by Izabella Sand. They are available during December in the choir area at St. James for a donation that will be used for charitable causes.

CHURCH CLEANER NEEDED St. Mary Glenmore site is hiring a cleaner. This is a paid position. This person or family would need to clean the church and basement weekly after Wednesday Religious Education classes but before Mass on Sundays. Regularly it will be about two hours per week unless extra cleaning is needed for events. If interested, please contact Anna at the Parish Office at 920-864-7641.

COOKIES FOR THE HOMEBOUND The Social Concerns Group at St. James is putting together gifts for shut-ins, and they need your help. They are looking for home baked cookies to include with the packages they will deliver. Please bring them to the par-ish kitchen by December 15.

ALL SAINTS CHRISTMAS COOKIE BOXES The Altar Society will be delivering Christmas Cookie boxes this year to those in need of some holiday cheer. Call the parish office if you would like to suggest someone. Cookie donations can be dropped off at the parish office or the church hall before 9am on Tuesday, Dec. 17. Anyone inter-ested in helping assemble or deliver can join us at that time. BINGO AT ALL SAINTS Due to an early bulletin deadline, the Progressive Jackpot amount is unknown at this time. Join us on Monday, Dec. 9 for another fun evening of Bingo. Doors open at 5:30 and Bingo begins promptly at 6:30pm. Come early for a hot sandwich and a delicious dessert! EARLY BULLETIN DEADLINES Please be aware of these early deadlines coming up:

Monday, Dec. 9 for the December 15 bulletin

Friday, Dec. 13 for the December 22 bulletin

Thursday, Dec. 19 for the December 29 bulletin CHRISTMAS GIVING TREE AT ST. JOSEPH The Social Concerns Committee has a Giv-ing Tree set up in back of the church for “In Courage” (Domestic Violence Center) and Hope House (Shelter & Guidance Center for the Homeless) in Manitowoc. These organizations help provide support for independent living for individuals/families who are homeless because of abusive situations or unforeseen life changes. The items on the Giving Tree are extremely important in achieving the goal of independence. Please consider purchasing an item for these organizations by taking a gift tag from the tree and adding it to your Christmas shopping list. Unwrapped gifts and tags should be put back under the tree by December 15.

ST. JAMES MITTEN TREE You are invited to help decorate an Advent Mit-ten Tree with new or homemade mittens, scarves and hats for men, women and children. A tree is set up in the back of church from now through December 15 for you to place your do-nations. The items will be given to families in need in our area. Thank you in advance for your support.

A Voice Crying Out in the Desert

This weekend, we hear the beautiful gospel passage about the work of John the Baptist. Jesus said of John "Truly I say to you, among those born of women there has not arisen anyone greater than John the Baptist!” Many different theologians and scholars have shared comments on this particular statement. When I think of these words, I think mostly of John the Baptist’s great humility. One of my fa-vorite quotes from John the Baptist addresses his humility when John proclaimed, “He (Jesus) must increase, I must decrease.”

John’s statement is very rich in meaning and depth, as it is a message that we should all strive for. John the Bap-tist tells us that Jesus needs to become more a part of our lives and to fill our lives so deeply, so that we put our longings to the side, and live as Jesus taught us to live. The gospel can make us greater than we could ever be on our own—and John’s stepping aside allowed that gos-pel to come in its full power, just as it can with us.

Advent is a time to pray about how much more we can allow Jesus to come into our lives and to fill us, so that our own interests and shortcomings start to decrease and the love and life of God begins to increase in us. The continued reception of the Sacraments such as Holy Eucharist and Reconciliation help us to increase our love for God and to allow him to live in us more deeply every-day of our lives. What a wonderful Christmas gift it would be this year to have God increase in our lives, just as God did in the life of John the Baptist.

God’s Blessings,

Specific Ideas for the Special Days

Decide where you want to spend the holidays--you may

want to switch up the location, or it may be of comfort to keep it the same. Either way, make a conscious decision about location.

December 15 8:00 am St. James 8:30 am St. Mary-G 10:00am St. Joseph

December 22 8:00 am St. James 8:30 am St. Mary-G 10:00am St. Joseph

On December 8th we would normally celebrate the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, which is a Holy Day of Obligation for Catholics. With the Solemnity this year falling on a Sunday, the Sunday Advent Mass celebra-tion ranks higher than the Solemnity. Many Catholics mis-

understand what the Immaculate Conception actually is. I wanted to share some information with you to enlighten you on the beauty of the “Solemnity” and the “Immaculate Conception”. The word “solemnity” comes from the Latin word for "festival." Consequently, the Church reserves solemnities for the commemoration of its most important events such as the Im-maculate Conception. Although a solemnity is an important day for Catholics, they are not obligated to attend an additional Mass when one falls on a Sunday. The following are solemnities in the Roman Catholic

Calendar: Mary, Mother of God, Epiphany, St. Joseph, Annun-ciation, Easter, Ascension, Pentecost, Trinity Sunday, Corpus Christi, Sacred Heart, Nativity of St. John the Baptist, St. Peter and Paul, Assumption of Mary, All Saints, Christ the King, Im-maculate Conception of Mary, and Christmas Most non-Catholics (as well as many Catholics) can get mixed-up about terminology and definitions of similar words, regarding what the solemnity is about. It is generally assumed that the Immaculate Conception means that Jesus was immacu-lately conceived in Mary's womb. (Sadly, the Mass readings for the Immaculate Conception do not help dispel this misunder-standing.) This is not accurate. The conception of Jesus in Mary's

womb is actually referred to as the Incarnation - when the Word of God became flesh. This is why the Church celebrates the Incarnation on March 25th, 9 months before Christmas. So, what is this solemnity that we celebrate just 17 days before Christmas? It is the fact that Mary, the Mother of God, was herself conceived immaculate in her mother's womb. But what does "immaculate" mean? It can't mean a virgin birth, be-cause only Jesus was conceived and born that way. It means that when Joachim and Anne (Mary's parents) cooperated with God in bringing a new life into the world, God set this one particular child to be separate (one of the connota-tions of the word "holy") from all other descendants of Adam and

Eve, in that she would be born without the stain of Original Sin. By this extraordinary act of divine intervention, the Mother of God would be an absolutely pure vessel by which the pure Light of Men could enter the world. Since Jesus is the unblemished Lamb of God, and Mary is His only natural parent, it is only logi-cal that she too had to be completely pure, even from her con-ception in her mother's womb.

HOLIDAY CARE NOTES AT ST. JOSEPH The holidays can be a very difficult time when a loved one has passed away and is greatly missed, or if you have some other concern that has you down. There are Care Notes in the back of St. Joseph Church that can help you cope and make the holidays easier to deal with. Please take some time to look at them and if you find one that is helpful, please feel free to take it with you.

BLESSING BOXES FOR THE HOMELESS St. Mary Glenmore site will have a Giv-ing Tree during the month of December in the back of church. Be sure to grab a donation card if able; all donations will be used to make Blessing Bags for the Green Bay homeless population. Our Religious Education students will be

assembling them in January, and then we will be bringing them with us to give out at our meal for St John’s Homeless Shelter. Please return all unwrapped donations to the back of church by Sunday, December 29.

NEED A SPECIAL CHRISTMAS CARD? There’s always someone special on your Christmas mailing

list for sending a holiday card to. Look no further than St.

James Parish Hall for beautiful, original cards that are for

sale. They have beautifully matted photos with religious

themes, local interest, or scenery, suitable for many differ-

ent occasions. The display is self-serve with cards costing

$3.00 each. All proceeds benefit the Good Samaritan Fund.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS FUND RAISER This is the perfect Christmas or birthday gift for your family and friends. The Knights of Columbus are selling Kwik Trip car wash cards with five Ultimate Car Washes, valued at $50, for only $36.
