THIS EUCHARISTIC FEAST Some things about human nature don’t
change, even over the course of centuries. When we celebrate a
holiday, we have a meal; when we celebrate a significant event, we
have a feast. In today’s first reading, Lady Wisdom is set-ting a
feast, a sign of celebrating the covenant that Israel has with God.
Israel’s central remembrance of its saving Exodus covenant is the
Passover meal. So it is natural—and not coincidental—that the
Christian celebration of the new covenant sealed by the blood of
Christ on the cross happens at a meal, our Eucharist, offered first
by Jesus in the context of Passover remembrance. It is easy for us,
sometimes, to forget the very long and rich religious and human
origins of our eucharistic feasting on the bread and cup that are
the Body and Blood of Jesus. Today, and for the next few Sundays
that we hear the “Bread of Life” discourse from John, let us bring
to mind the loving cove-nant that God makes with us, and be filled
with great joy at this marvelous feast that we have come to attend!

Confirmation “Opening Night”
The time has come for our H S teenagers to consider continuing
their Religious Education and exploring the idea of completing
their Initiation into the Roman
Catholic Church. Our Catholic Sacraments of initiation are
three: Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation. High School Students,
do you wish to investigate what it means to become a fully
initiated member of the Catholic Church? Here is your chance.
Confirmation at Transfiguration is not a graduation! Here, we
strive to create a dynamic and engaging two year program that is
sure to keep you on your toes in faith and service and encourage
you to step into your call as disci-ples for a lifetime.
Want to learn more about it? Please join us with your Parent(s)
for an Information Meeting on Thursday, August 23 from 7:30 to 9:30
p.m. to hear the details, ask questions and make a preliminary
decision.
At our “Opening Night”, on August 23 we will explain the program
in detail. We will then give you time to talk it over together, as
a family. At the conclusion of the even-ing, we will be accepting
the names of those teens who wish to further explore the program by
attending an all-day, mini-retreat on Sunday, Sept. 9. We will also
be collecting a permission slip and $30.00 per student to cov-er
the costs of the mini-retreat.
FYI: Confirmation Preparation is Not offered at our Cath-olic
High Schools; it must be completed within the parish.
Parents: While the final decision to be confirmed must be that
of your teen; your support is crucial. If your daughter/son has
expressed any interest in exploring the Sacrament of Confirmation
at this time, it is essential that you BOTH attend this Opening
Night for the entire time, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. If your teen decides
to wait, our next class will begin fall, 2020.
We look forward to meeting with you on August 23.
Your Prayers Are Requested for the Repose of the Soul of:

LETTER FROM POPE FRANCIS THE “JOY OF THE GOSPEL”
The Proclamation of the Gospel—#250
Interreligious Dialogue
An attitude of openness in truth and in love must characterize
the dialogue with the followers of non-Christian religions, in
spite of various obstacles and difficulties, especially forms of
fundamentalism on both sides. Interreligious dialogue is a
necessary condition for peace in the world, and so it is a duty for
Christians as well as other religious communities. This dialogue is
in first place a conversation about human existence or simply, as
the bishops of India have put it, a matter of “being open to them,
sharing their joys and sorrows”. In this way we learn to ac-cept
others and their different ways of living, think-ing and speaking.
We can then join one another in taking up the duty of serving
justice and peace, which should become a basic principle of all our
ex-changes. A dialogue which seeks social peace and justice is in
itself, beyond all merely practical con-siderations, an ethical
commitment which brings about a new social situation. Efforts made
in dealing with a specific theme can become a process in which, by
mutual listening, both parts can be puri-fied and enriched. These
efforts, therefore, can also express love for truth.
Fr. Terry’s Remarks—Too many of us begin dia-logue hoping or
perhaps determined to convince or convert or prove a point. The
result is not unusually more misunderstanding and even another
reason to disagree. A sincere desire to learn from and a love for
mutual sharing are a sound and healthy basis for genuine dialogue.
To win is not the object but to have a strong desire for openness
and a desire to share joys and sorrows. I may be very strong in my
faith, I may be quite clear in my mind and heart what Jesus taught
but in dialogue I am meeting Christ in the other and Jesus wishes
me to listen to him and respond to him in the person who is
speaking with me at this moment. Genuine dialogue reveals our love
for truth and love of neighbor.
