LETTER FROM POPE FRANCIS THE “JOY OF THE GOSPEL” CONTINUED...
The Proclamation of the Gospel—#191
II. The Inclusion of the Poor in Society
In union with God, we hear a plea
In all places and circumstances, Christians, with the help of their pastors, are called to hear the cry of the poor. This has been eloquently stated by the bishops of Brazil: “We wish to take up daily the joys and hopes, the difficulties and sorrows of the Brazilian people, especially of those living in the barrios and the countryside – landless, homeless, lacking food and health care – to the detriment of their rights. See-ing their poverty, hearing their cries and knowing their sufferings, we are scandalized because we know that there is enough food for everyone and that hunger is the result of a poor distribution of goods and income. The problem is made worse by the gen-eralized practice of wastefulness”.
Fr. Terry’s Remarks— Sometimes on our screens we watch famished people rushing to grab as much food or goods as they can from distributing planes or trucks. They are afraid there will not be enough for everyone so they try to get as much as possible for their own families. We are shocked!! How self-ish? Pope Francis, recalling what he has witnessed in his own Brazil, reminds us today that; there really is enough for everyone if only we were not so waste-ful and greedy. How we arrive at a way to solve these tremendous problems is very complex and we need all the expertise we can muster from every quarter. We know this; that no solution is possible until the hearts of all of us are moved by the cries of the poor and we see them like our own children.
