In Pope Francis' Bull on the Year of Mercy(15) he says, "It is my burning desire that, during this Jubilee, the Christian people may reflect on the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. It will be a way to reawaken our conscience, too often grown dull in the face of poverty. And let us enter more deeply into the heart of the Gospel where the poor have a special experience of God's mercy...Let us rediscover these corporal works of mercy: to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, to clothe the naked..."

For Lent Lord, you endured forty days of temptation & suffer-ing. Lead me into the desert as you did the children of Israel. Change my contrite heart & help me grow in holiness. Guide my steps of sacrifice to Calvary and beyond the empty tomb. May I rise with you on Easter to a new life of grace. I ask this in your name. Amen.

A Healthy Body/Healthy Soul 51 Healthy Foods You Can Say “Yes” To, cont… Tufts University Health & Nutrition Newsletter

23. Mackerel - Less familiar than other cold-water fish, mackerel is worth adding to your seafood reper-toire because it also contains heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. It's also a good dietary source of vitamin D, as well as of selenium, which has antioxidant bene-fits. (Small children and pregnant women should eat mackerel sparingly, however, because of the risk that some fish may have high levels of mercury.) 24. Milk (non- or low-fat) - That ad campaign urging you to get milk is on-target - as long as you stick to skim or low-fat milk. Drinking milk makes it easy to meet the new dietary guidelines' recommendation to get the equivalent of three cups of dairy products daily. In addition to delivering calcium, fortified milk is among the best ways to get vitamin D, which your body needs in tandem with calcium to build bone strength to prevent osteoporosis.

Retrouvaille, Rebuilding Hurting Marriages - This weekend experience helps couples find a new way of looking at themselves & one another. Retrouvaille has helped marriages survive addiction, adultery, anger & indifference. It is not group therapy, you will not be asked to share your personal life with anyone other than your spouse. The program focuses on teaching commu-nication skills. Marriages are rebuilt & lives changed. The next weekend is March 4-6 at the Good News Center, Utica. Visit www.thegoodnewscenter.org.

Wisdom From Our Catholic Tradition “Love is a mystery that transforms everything it touches into something beautiful and pleasing to God.” St. Faustina Kowalska

“Always give good heed to the Word of God, whether you hear or read it in private, or hearken to it when publicly preached. Listen with attention and rever-ence, seek to profit by it, and do not let the precious words fall unheeded but receive them into your heart.” St. Francis de Sales

Father’s NotesFather’s NotesFather’s NotesFather’s Notes Returning to Jesus “But Herod said, ‘...Who then is this Jesus about

whom I hear such things?’ And he kept trying to see

Jesus.” Luke 9:9

Even Herod - that “fox” as Jesus called him - was in-terested in Jesus & felt a keen desire to see Him. What was (and is) so attractive about Jesus? What has kept persons throughout the centuries seeking Him & long-ing for His companionship? Why do people feel so drawn to Jesus? I have a great respect for the traditions & teachings of other religions, but always, I return to Jesus & His message. Here I feel most at home, most inspired, most challenged to live my life well. What attracts me to Jesus? His integrity: Jesus always lived what He taught. His compassionate presence: He expended love to all those who were hurting. His courage: against injustice & religious corruption of His time. His openness: He welcomed those who were very different from Himself - lepers, Samaritans, sinners. All knew they had a welcome from Jesus. Love emanated from His being & His ac-tions. Let us ask ourselves today what attracts us to Jesus. It is a good day to spend some time with Him, renewing & deepening our friendship. Sr. Joyce Rupp, O.S.M.

Seeking Jesus’ Rest “Come to Me, all you who labor and are overburdened

and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28

One must seek the refreshment &rest Jesus offers. One must leave behind the oppressive situations of one’s life and go to Jesus, who calls out to all who are so exhausted that they want to change their life. Coming to Jesus is the condition for finding relief. All we need to do is take that first step, to choose to enter the sphere of His presence, and the unnatural pressures borne down upon us by both the world and ourselves begin to dissipate. To the extent that we are far from Jesus, we are the source of our own greatest burdens. Without Him as Lord, we are caught in the tyranny of our passions and susceptible to the world’s manipula-tion and the influence of the Evil One. Without the all-consuming love of Jesus burning in our heart as pure transforming fire, the passions roam the landscape of our soul like hungry orphans. Jesus, whose name means “savior”, is by definition the source of relief from all oppression, whether self generated within or imposed on us from without. Erasmo Leivia-Merikakis

A Penny & a Prayer

“ what good is it to profess faith without practicing it? … If a brother or sister has nothing to wear & no food for the day, & you say to them, “Goodbye & good luck! Keep warm & well fed,” but do not meet their bodily needs, what good is that?.. .. faith that does nothing in practice….is thoroughly lifeless. “ James 2: 14-16 When you see or hear of persons in distress through-out the world, know that Catholic Relief Services and/or Caritas are trying to relieve that suffering. Put your faith into action & drop a coin in a Rice Bowl, a jar or cup & whisper Jesus name. This could occur multiple times a day. If only half of the 70 mil-lion USA Catholics prayed & pitched in a penny during Lent, CRS would raise over $30 million- 3 times what they currently raise. That means many more suffering people clothed & fed. Bring your faith alive with a Penny & a Prayer

Dear friends, Someone asked me about the Income and Expense part of the bulletin, and commented that December showed a huge increase in income. There are several reasons why. We had large crowds on Christmas Eve and Day. We also were very fortunate that a few families gave end of year donations. Lastly, we just didn’t have that many expenses in December. Our CCD program already purchased their supplies back in the summer. The social events were relatively inexpensive, and we reuse most Christmas decorations from year to year. Our new roof and window caulking mainte-nance have resulted in lower heating bills this year. (Plus it just hasn’t been that cold out!) On the flip side, we have seen more people attending Mass and we welcomed new families to the parish in Decem-ber. In January, we had some yearly expenses like the taxes paid for the Rectory. All in all, we are do-ing very well financially and are able to pay all bills each month with ease. Thank you for finan-cially supporting our parish. I think we are doing good things for our families and our community. Last weekend was a busy one at ICC! The bingo night sponsored by the social committee was very successful with 80+ people in attendance. There were older folks, younger folks, families and visi-tors. The soup and chili was a big hit with most people going back for seconds and thirds! Thank you, Kelly Erickson for planning the Bingo part and Anita Urda for the soup/chili part. Thanks also to Jess Trepa and the youth who set up and helped with clean up. It was a really fun evening for the parish! The Youth Mass on Sunday was a real celebration with the chimes, youth readers and singers, ushers and gift bearers. Father Kris Boretto enjoyed the Family Time News with the Love Graffiti Heart and Valentine Prayer. Thank you, Gloria Straniero for helping to coordinate this monthly worship. I hope you feel part of our parish family. If you ever have suggestions, a prayer request, or want to get involved, please call me, one of our trustees or a member of the Parish Council. We want to bring about an enthusiasm for our faith that, in living that faith in Jesus, we freely share it with others! Peace! ~Mary Wentlent
