The 100th Anniversary of the Apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima Part XXVI
AUGUST 19, 1917
Lucia’s account:
“What do you want of me?”
“I want you to continue going to the Cova da Iria on the 13th and to continue praying the Rosary every day.
In the last month, I will perform a miracle so that all may believe.”
“What do you want done with the money that the people leave in the Cova da Iria?”
“Have two litters made. One is to be carried by you and Jacinta and two other girls dressed in white; the
other one is to be carried by Francisco and three other boys. The money from the litters is for the
“festa” of Our Lady of the Rosary, and what is left over will help towards the construction of a chapel
that is to be built here.”
“I would like to ask you to cure some sick persons.”
“Yes, I will cure some of them during the year.” Then, looking very sad, Our Lady said: Pray, pray very
much, and make sacrifices for sinners, for many souls go to hell, because there are none to sacrifice
themselves and to pray for them.”
Comment:
You may have noticed the date of this apparition: August 19th. While our Lady had requested that the children come to the
Cova da Iria on the 13th of each month, they were not able to come because as they were preparing to leave for the Cova, the
authorities of the local district requested to meet with the children and the priest. After visiting with the priest, they offered
to give the children a ride to the Cova. The offer was accepted, but the authorities took the children to the district office in
Orem. There the children were interrogated for several hours, trying to get them to say that the apparitions were a lie, that
the priest had put them up to this, and demanding to know what the “secret” was. The authorities were atheistic Marxists,
the socialist controlled government of Portugal at that time. They did not believe that our Lady told them a secret on July
13th; rather they believed that the secret was that the local priest and the Church was behind this.
When their interrogation of the children failed (they remained steadfast with their story and refused to reveal the secret), the
authorities put the children into a jail cell containing hardened criminals. After a short time one of the prisoners tried to
cheer the children up by singing and dancing. However, after this brief “distraction” the children wanted to pray. Before
long they had all in the jail cell kneeling and praying the rosary with the children. They were kept overnight, and in a final
effort to convince the children to tell the “secret” and to confess that they were lying, the authorities threatened to boil each
of them alive in oil. When this failed to convince the children, they took Jacinta out of the room to boil her alive first. Lucia
and Francisco were mortified, but refused to give in. Then they came and took Francisco away. Lucia remained steadfast,
certain that they had killed Jacinta and Francisco and that she was next. The authorities tried one last time with Lucia, but
failed. They took her from the room, but instead of boiling her alive they put her in a room with her two cousins Jacinta and
Francisco. The boiling alive was just a threat, but the children did not know this. They were willing to die a horrible death
rather than disobey our Lady and tell the secret or to lie that the apparitions where made up. The children were kept in jail a
total of two nights, being released on August 15th, the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary.
Meanwhile, back at the Cova hundreds of people gathered to see the children during the apparition, hoping to get a glimpse
of the supernatural event or a least be close and a part of it. Obviously, the children did not arrive. Some people claimed to
see a cloud or mist descend on the holm oak tree for a short time then leave, as if to say our Lady was there but left without
the children being there. However, while the children were attending sheep on August 19th, our lady appeared to them in a
placed called Valinhos.
