OCTOBER – IN HONOR OF OUR LADY
AND THE MOST HOLY ROSARY
“Pray the Rosary every day, in order to obtain peace
for the world, and the end of the war.”
These are the words of Our Lady to the three children of
Fatima on May 13, 1917. They are just as relevant to-
day as they where back then. May has traditionally
been a month in which we honor Mary, as is the month
of October. The visits of Our Lady to the three children
of Fatima began in May and ended in October. Mary
never identified herself to the three children until Octo-
ber 13, when she said, “I am the Lady of the Rosary.”
Although October is dedicated to Our Lady, it is done
so under the title of Our Lady of the Rosary. However,
this is not because of what took place at Fatima in 1917,
but what took place on the first Sunday of October,
1571.
In the late 1500’s Europe was being threatened by the
advancement of the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman
Empire was rooted in Turkey and in the Islamic faith.
Islam had already made headway into Europe long be-
fore this. Already by the 700’s much of Portugal and
Spain was under the occupation of the Moors, which
lasted until the middle of the 13th century. It was be-
cause of this occupation that the little hamlet in Portu-
gal, Fatima, was named after the sister of Muhammad,
the founder of Islam. However, the Ottoman Empire
was a much more serious threat to Christendom. The
Christian West had taken up arms to hold them back,
but was losing terribly. There was one major battle, yet
to be fought, that would be decisive. If the West lost, it
would fall to Islam, and if the West won, Christianity
would be preserved. This battle is known as the battle
of Lapanto. It was a naval battle in which the Western
fleet was greatly outnumbered by the Turkish fleet and
had little chance of success. In fact, as the battle en-
sued, the West was losing badly. To bring peace and an
end to the war. Pope St. Pius V called upon the Chris-
tian world to pray the Rosary. The date set was October
7, 1571, the first Sunday of October. On this day, the
tide changed in favor of the Western forces and the
Turkish fleet was soundly defeated. St. Pius V attribut-
ed the victory to the praying of the Rosary and estab-
lished the feast in honor of Our Lady of Victory, but
today known as Our Lady of the Rosary, on October 7th.
In 1917 the whole world was immersed in a far more
serious war. Our Lady asked the three Children of Fati-
ma to pray the Rosary every day to bring peace to the
world and an end to the war. The children faithfully
heeded her message and on October 13 they were prom-
ised “The war is going to end, and the soldiers will soon
return to their homes.” Once again, Our Lady of the
Rosary was victorious. However, she warned that if her
message was not heeded a worse war would come
about. History speaks for itself.
The answer is simple. Pray! Pray! And Pray! But most
particularly, pray the Rosary every day to obtain peace
and an end to the war. Real prayer must be backed up
with conversion of heart, a turning away from sin, and a
turning to God. We should pray the Rosary every day,
throughout the whole year, and not just for October.
In Jesus and Mary,
P.S. I will return to my series: “Pillars of Holiness” in
November.
Once again I repeat what Our Lady of Fatima told the
three children:
“Pray the Rosary every day, in order to obtain peace
for the world, and the end of the war.”
