Confessions will be again scheduled for
Saturdays, 1-2:00 p.m. Confessions will be
heard in the Loggetta (the small room accessed
through Fourth Street vestibule.) Penitents will
be directed to sit in the back row near the
windows, and the priest will be seated in the
front row, nearest the altar, to maintain the
proper distance. Face masks should be worn in
confession.

14 June 2020
Dear Parishioners,
If this June seems in somewhat empty, missing
something, we should not be surprised. This is
traditionally the season for graduations, mortar board
caps, and yearbooks. This year they seem to have
been put on hold, or observed “virtually.” Speaking of
yearbooks, it is often a feature that in yearbooks
graduates choose a quote to accompany their
photograph (I’ll have more to say about that next
week.) Choosing a particular quote does not
necessarily imply that the student is selecting that
individual as a role model, a hero, if you will. It
simply means that the quote captures some ideal,
some vision, some advice that the student identified
with.
I think it can be difficult in these uncertain
times, in our often value-confused society, especially
in regard to celebrities, to find role models of sound
character, personal holiness, and moral values.
With that in mind, I would like to offer to this
year’s 8th grade and 12th grade graduates, one
outstanding young man who died at the age of 15, but
whose life is an inspiration to the youth of our time.
Sanctity does not depend on age. What matters is not
the length of our days, but the depth of our lives. We
should not think that the teens of our own time are
incapable of heroic virtue. I would like to propose a
teenager, Carlo Acutis.
He was born in 1991, in London, although
Milan was the family home. Carlo, as Pier Giorgio
Frassati to whom we made reference several weeks
ago, was deeply devoted to the Eucharist, receiving
Communion frequently and regularly spending time in
silent meditation in front of the tabernacle before or
after Mass, and to the Blessed Virgin Mary, habitually
praying the rosary. He was also regular in his practice
of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, going to
confession every week. (Confession is an excellent
exercise for keeping in touch with ourselves, directing
our lives with divine grace, not being swept along by
fad or fashion. Clearly Carlo found that in his practice
of the sacrament he was able to keep his focus and be
his own person.)
Like many a teenager, Carlo had his dreams
and ambitions. He had a strategy: “To always be close
to Jesus,” he told his friends, “that’s my plan.”
To all who knew him, he was a normal, well-
balanced teenager. He was endowed with an
engaging and outgoing personality – as well as a
personal faith and concern for others. At school, he
paid special attention to classmates who were
disabled and defended them against bullies. He was
not afraid to speak out or act in the name of truth
and charity.
He loved to travel, especially to Assisi, to
visit the shrine of his beloved Francis. Carlo
attended a Jesuit high school in Milan, and there he
developed his passion for computers, technology,
and the Internet. He recognized the potential of the
Internet as a means of evangelization and developed
a website cataloguing Eucharistic miracles:
Eucharistic Miracles of the World, undoubtedly an
outgrowth of his own personal devotion to Mass and
Eucharistic adoration. He started the project when
he was 11 years old and wrote at the time, “The
more Eucharist we receive, the more we will
become like Jesus, so that on this earth we will
have a foretaste of Heaven.” The Eucharist was
his “highway to heaven,” and the Scriptures were
his “compass.” His story can be found on
www.CarloAcutis-en.org. He is remembered
saying, “All people are born as originals, but many
die as photographs.” (Good yearbook quote?) He
was determined not to become a photograph.
Another quote: “Our aim has to be the Infinite, not
the finite. The Infinite is our homeland. We have
always been expected in heaven.”
Carlo contracted leukemia and died on 12
October 2006. He was buried in his beloved Assisi
as he himself had requested.
The accounts of the Eucharistic miracles
chronicled on his website are not meant to be
causes for our belief in the Real Presence, any
more than the miraculous healings of Christ in the
gospels are meant to be the reasons why we
believe Jesus is the Son of God. Our faith rests on
our personal encounter with Jesus as our Lord and
Redeemer, discovered in prayer and meditation. It
is not “proved” by miracles. Miracles are merely
confirmations of our faith.
A miracle attributed to Carlo was accepted
by the Medical Council for the Congregation of
Saints this past February. Pope Francis is scheduled
to beatify him in his beloved Assisi later this year.
Blessed Carlo Acutis, aged 15. A worthy
role model for youth – indeed, for all of us.

ST. JOSEPH’S REOPENS FOR MASS
Dear parishioners and friends,
St. Joseph Parish is happy to announce that we will be reopening for public Mass beginning Saturday,
June 13, 2020. This will be a gradual resumption of Masses, with an abbreviated schedule of
liturgies:
Weekends: Saturday: 5:00 p.m. Sunday: 7:30 a.m.; 10:30 a.m.;
1:00 p.m.; and 5:30 p.m.
Weekdays, Monday through Friday: 8:00 & 9:00 a.m.
Saturday morning: 8:30 a.m.
Following government directives, the church is allowed to admit 25% of possible occupancy –
approximately 180 people. Worshipers will be expected to bring their own face coverings and to wear
them while they are in the church, as well as to maintain proper distancing. Pews have been marked
to indicate which pews are open and which are closed. Proper seating is also indicated. Elderly
parishioners and those with health issues are encouraged to continue to remain at home and avoid any
crowds.
Since we will again be celebrating Mass in our church in real time, we will not be taping and posting
any further video Masses on our website or on You Tube. We do not have the facilities for live
streaming. Mass is available on television on such stations as CFN (Catholic Faith Network) or
EWTN. We apologize for any inconvenience.
Weddings will still be celebrated. However, following the directives stated above, and if it is a
Nuptial Mass, Communion will not be distributed. No programs or hand-outs are permitted. All
family and guests will be expected to maintain social distancing and to wear face masks throughout
the ceremony. We hope that this will change in the near future – but these are the directives currently
in effect.
Funeral Masses will be celebrated, again, following the directives stated above. Due to the restricted
space in funeral homes, parish staff will not be conducting wake services. Families will be directed to
contact the priest who will be celebrating the Funeral Mass by phone to make arrangements for the
liturgy (Scripture readings, etc.)
As we resume Mass, we rejoice at this step out of our separateness and toward shared life and prayer.
Sincerely yours in Christ Jesus,
James P. Swiader
Reverend Msgr. James P. Swiader

FRIDAY EUCHARISTIC
ADORATION HAS
BEGUN AGAIN
I am happy to say that as of
Friday, June 5, we resumed
Adoration, 1-3:00 p.m. in the
church proper, not in the loggetta,
to provide for wider distancing.
We will continue to observe the
directives regarding appropriate
distancing and face masks.
Adoration will begin with an opening prayer,
followed by silent personal prayer. It will conclude
with a final prayer, Benediction and the Divine
Praises, recited softly. We have been directed to
refrain from singing. Please pass the word to others
who might be interested.
Again, a reminder: regularly scheduled confessions
will resume on Saturday, June 6. Confessions will
be heard in the loggetta, 1-2:00 p.m., accessed
through the Fourth Street vestibule. If the door is
open, you are free to enter, taking a seat in the back
row of chairs. The priest will be sitting in the front
row of chairs, diagonally across the room, facing
the tabernacle. To preserve anonymity, he will not
turn around but will speak over his shoulder. We
will also put a screen between penitent and priest.
If the door is closed, there might be another penitent
receiving Reconciliation. Please wait until the door
is left open. Confessions can also be arranged for
other times & dates by calling the rectory and
making an appointment with one of the priests.
As new directive come out from the diocese/state, I
will keep you up-dated.
EUCHARISTIC
BLESSING
Today is the Solemnity
of the Most Holy Body
& Blood of Christ –
Corpus Christi.
It has long been a
tradition to hold
Eucharistic processions
on Corpus Christi.
Continuing that tradition, but with a twist for the
times, we invite parishioners to participate in a
procession of cars to be blessed with the Blessed
Sacrament. From 9:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., cars
can enter the school parking lot at the Fourth
Street entrance and proceed around to the back
of the school building. Set up near the gym
doors will be a small altar, on which will be
exposed the Blessed Sacrament in a monstrance.
One of the parish priests will bless each family,
(who will remain in their car, to observe
distance guidelines. Face masks are also
recommended.) After the blessing, cars should
proceed around the school building and exit
onto Fourth Street.
In these troubled times of pandemic and social
unrest, we turn to our Lord really present in the
Sacrament of his Body & Blood, to ask his
protection for our families, our parish, and our
nation. We encourage you to be part of this
procession and especially to bring your children
to receive this blessing.
The Census provides critical data that
lawmakers, business owners, teachers and
many others use to provide daily services,
products and support for you and your
community. Every year, billions of dollars in
federal funding go to hospitals, fire
departments, schools, roads and other
resources based on census data.

STEWARDSHIP ~ A Way of Life
“Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all
partake of the one bread.” 1Corinthians 10:17
Among the compelling Eucharistic themes
proclaimed in today’s readings is the notion of
“participation” as found in Saint Paul’s letter to
the Corinthians. Good stewards are part of a
Eucharistic family: loving, welcoming, serving. An
important part of living as a steward comes about in
the many ways we can participate in the life of the
Church. No matter how much time we have to give,
no matter what our skills or interests, no matter what
our level of commitment, there is a way to participate
as a good steward to enrich our lives and the lives of
others to build up the Body of Christ. Ask yourself
how you participate in the life of our parish.
When we gather for Mass, we become one with
Christ, transformed by his loving gift. We become
one with Christ in the person we may not know
sitting next to us in the pew. This feast encourages us
to embrace the Eucharistic reality that although we
may be strangers sharing the one Lord’s table
wherever we are, we are one, just as the many grains
of wheat make up one loaf of bread, and the many
grapes make up the shared wine in the Lord’s cup of
blessing.
Although there are many divisions among Christians
in the world today, as ambassadors of Christ, let us
pray that God will show us the way to unity through
our devotion to Christ in the Eucharist so that we can
offer a more genuinely compelling and fruitful
witness to a world in need of God’s love and
compassion.
As disciples of Jesus, we are called to lead holy lives
and invite others to join us. Living a Stewardship
lifestyle, being grateful and generous with our gifts,
serves a twofold purpose. One, it helps build God’s
kingdom here on earth. Two, it is a road map to
Heaven. Let’s help each other get there! Let us pray
that we, as Christian Stewards, answer God’s call to
build His Kingdom on earth and help each other get
to Heaven!

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL
We know that many of you have been
anxiously awaiting word about our Vacation
Bible School for this summer. As we all know
we are living in an unprecedented time of a
global pandemic. We have been quarantined in
our homes for many weeks now. After much
discussion we have decided that we cannot
offer our Vacation Bible School program this
summer. There is no way that we would be able
to safely accommodate the approximately 400
volunteers and campers who usually attend.
Please understand that this was not an easy
decision to make but it was made in the best
interests of all concerned. We hope that we will
all be together soon, and we look forward to
our 2021 Vacation Bible School season. God
bless you all. Stay safe and be well.

To Our Parishioners
And to All Men and Women of
Conscience and Good Will:
In the light of the recent tragic events in
Minneapolis and across our nation, we
invite you to join with us in prayer for
deeper respect for all innocent lives.
We recognize the sorrow and pain of
the African-American community, and
we pray for the safety of all men and
women of color. We extend our
concern to the innocent families and
business owners, whose lives have been
so tragically overturned by violence and
looting. We also pray for the dedicated
men and women of our police and first
responders, who have themselves
become the targets of wanton violence
and attack as they pursue their duty to
maintain safety and stability in our
society.
Let us implore the protection of Mary,
Queen of Peace, Patroness of our
United States, to restore respect
between races and protection of all
innocent individuals.

Persecution of Churches Continues in
America
Prohibiting the reception of Holy Communion was one
condition for churches to reopen according to a May 26 Executive
Order in Howard County, Maryland. "There shall be no
consumption of food or beverage of any kind ... including as part
of a religious service," the order stated. "If singing takes place,
only the choir or religious leaders may sing." (1)
This order coincided with statements from Dr. Anthony Fauci
who recommended churches should stop distributing
communion. "I think for the time being, you just gotta forestall
that," Fauci said. (2)
Days later, the Maryland county reversed this Executive
Order. "For the Catholic community, the reception of
Communion is central to our faith lives and to our public
worship." (3) “We are pleased to hear that Howard county will be
lifting restrictions on faith institutions ...." said the Archdiocese of
Baltimore. (4)
A family of 12 in Virginia, has filed a First Amendment lawsuit
against VA Gov. Northam over his COVID-19 Executive Order
barring residents from freely assembling for religious worship and
forbidding public gatherings of more than 10 people.
The Center for American Liberty (CAL) is representing the
family in its case against the restriction - which, in addition to
stopping them from frequenting secular establishments as a
group, bars them from "going to the Sacrament of Reconciliation
(Confession), receiving the Sacrament of the Eucharist (Holy
Communion), and praying on their private property with their
priest and other believers." (5)
"The Executive Orders wrongly and unconstitutionally classify
the exercise of religion as non-essential," said a CAL
attorney. "Gov. Northam's restrictions on religious expression are
overly broad, discriminatory, and unconstitutional. Our plaintiffs
have been blessed with 10 children. (This Order) discriminates
against them because of the size of their family - ... while smaller
families do not face such a prohibition." (6)

Catholic Bishops Designate Religious Freedom Week - June
22-29: "To be Catholic and American should mean not having to choose
one over the other. Our allegiances are distinct, but they need not
be contradictory, and should instead be complimentary. That is
the teaching of our Catholic faith, which obliges us to work
together with fellow citizens for the common good of all who live
in this land. That is the vision of our founding and the
Constitution, which guarantees citizens of all religious faiths the
right to contribute to our common life together."
O God our Creator,
We ask you to bless us in our vigilance for the gift of religious
liberty. Give us the strength of mind and heart to readily defend
our freedoms when they are threatened; give us courage in
making our voices heard on behalf of the rights of your Church
and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith. Amen

Week Six-$690.00
Total of $12,560.00
Thank you all so much! Your faithful support
of our neighboring parishes in need is
appreciated so very much at this heartbreaking
time. Our collection continues and we will keep
you updated on St. Josephs’ generosity.
OUR “VIRTUAL FOOD DRIVE”
A HUGE SUCCESS!
Thank you to all of our parishioners who
contributed to our virtual food drive these past six
weeks to benefit our neighbors in need in
Hempstead and Roosevelt. We received a total of
$12,560.00 in food cards and monetary
donations. When the Outreach offices at Our
Lady of Loretto and the Queen of the Most Holy
Rosary reopen, they will be well prepared to assist
those in need of help.
We are planning to continue this ‘virtual’ mode of
conducting our monthly food drives for the
foreseeable future, made necessary by the
mandated response to COVID 19 and our desire to
keep everyone safe. A reminder will appear in the
bulletin and on the website for the first weekend
of the month, and if you are able to contribute,
you may send a check or supermarket gift card to
the Parish Social Ministry office at 120 Fifth
Street, Garden City 11530. You can also drop
your donation through the mail slot on the convent
door. Please make your check payable to St.
Joseph’s Church and indicate ‘food drive’ on the
memo line. Remember that we cannot accept
donations of groceries at this time.
Once again, thank you so much for your ongoing
concern for those who struggle to provide for their
families. St. Joseph’s Parish continues to remain
faithful to its commitment to care for those less
fortunate. On their behalf, we thank you.
***Special thanks are sent to the co-chairs of our
holiday Sponsor a Family program, Pat DiMattia
and Eileen Hoey, who thought of this way to
continue our support of the two recipient parishes
while our church was closed due to the pandemic.

BEWARE GIFT CARD SCAM
We are aware that Cyber thieves are now going after
your wallet in addition to your passwords by
adopting a simple tactic to trick you into handing
over your money.
While not new, gift card scams are on the rise and
can result in a victim losing hundreds or thousands
of dollars. In the past few days employees and
parishioners of St. Joseph Church have received an
email or text that pretends to be from Msgr.
Swiader. It asks them to " “Would you do me a
favor” and buy gift cards and send them photos of
the backs, for reasons that will supposedly be
explained later. The scammer may even ask you to
communicate with them via text message. In this
email/text message scam, you are given a very
plausible story as to why they need a gift card.
What you should do:
• Ask yourself, "“Would Msgr. Swiader really ask
me to do this?"
• Call Msgr. Swiader to verify authenticity of the
request.
• Do not reply to the email.
• Do not purchase any gift cards.

Cioffi, Janice Bateman, Kelly Noulas, Jaclyn Williams, Amanda Guele,
