17 October 2021

Dear Parishioners,

As we reach mid-October, we are at the height of autumn. Fall is a dazzling season – the golds and reds and oranges of the trees, the crisp, bracing air, the sharp tang of the scents of the fall – all combine in a marvelous natural display. Spring has it charms: the gentle pastels of the first buds on the trees, the flowering bulbs, the yellow forsythia and pink azaleas in bloom. But I think it lacks the strength of autumn. The roads to the East End are filled with pumpkin pickers; upstate New York and New England roads are thronged with the leaf-peepers. The annual beauty of the fall! It was to appreciate a beauty of another kind that led me to take a drive up the Hudson River Valley to the Storm King Art Center. The Hudson is no stranger to art. There is a group of American artists known at the Hudson River School, our first major, genuinely American art movement. They were mid-19th century painters known for their landscapes of the Hudson and the nearby Catskills and Adirondacks, hence their name. In time, their sights extended farther north and east: Niagara Falls, NY, and Mt. Washington, NH; and to the American West: the Sierra Nevadas, Yosemite, and the California Redwood forests. But their original inspiration was our own Hudson River Valley. At first, they were dismissed by art critics as excessively romantic, and the name was one of distain. But they caught the popular imagination, and their works are now highly regarded, sought by collectors and museums. A 90-minute drive can surround the traveler with breathtaking vistas – and never better than in autumn. But, as I said, my drive was for beauty of another kind – one with which, I confess, I was largely unfamiliar: the monumental abstract sculptures that fill the landscape of the Storm King Art Center, in New Windsor, NY. Set across 500-acres, it is arguably the largest collection of outdoor modern sculpture in the United States. Most of the pieces are steel or bronze, some painted a bright candy-apple red, standing out against the wooded hills in the distance. Others are left to weather with the elements, acquiring a patina that the artist intended. Most are of massive proportion, feats of engineering as well as design. And there are a few smaller works in granite along the pathways.

I was intrigued by some of the pieces, although I did not “understand” everything that I saw. (The names didn’t help too much either: Iliad, The Arch, Pyramidian, Neruda’s Gate). Others left me confused and somewhat underwhelmed. It was a reminder that beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder. That, after all, is the traditional definition of beauty from Thomas Aquinas: Pulchra est quod visum placet – “The beautiful is that which being seen, pleases.” It is entirely subjective. No one can tell me that I do not find something beautiful. (The same, I would propose, of music – “in the ear of the listener”.) It’s individual; and the medieval adage rings true: De gustibus, non est disputandum – “There should be no disputing in matters of taste.” Or as the sign in the Upstate antique shop says: One Man’s Trash Is Another Man’s Treasure! Immanuel Kant added another insight into our understanding of beauty – that the beautiful is enjoyed with disinterest, without concern for monetary value or profit. The beautiful is enjoyed simply for the pleasure it gives. I needn’t own it (although I might want to) to appreciate it and find it beautiful. “Art” is a different story. The judgment of artistic merit is one that requires training in history and theory, the study of technique and construct, made by “professionals.” Artistic appraisal in the visual arts is the domain of museum curators, assessing one painting as better than others in a certain category for studied reasons. I might enjoy the picture of the matador painted on black velvet that I bought at the flea market more than I do the Van Gogh. But to say that it is better “art” is another thing. Country or hip-hop or jazz is not to everyone’s taste. But assessing degrees of excellence must be left to those competent to judge within the genre. That is what the Grammys are all about. So, in this time of year, we should enjoy the vibrant colors, the invigorating temperatures, and the strong scents around us. Don’t think or analyze or compare. Just relax and enjoy each for itself – and give thanks to the munificent Creator, the Divine Artist, who gives us these beautiful gifts.

29h Sunday in Ordinary Time Church of Saint Joseph, Garden City, NY October 17, 2021

December 8, 2020 inaugurated the Year of

Saint Joseph, below is the prayer promulgated by

Pope Francis

Prayer for the Year of Saint Joseph

Hail, Guardian of the Redeemer, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary. To you God entrusted his only Son;

in you Mary placed her trust; with you Christ became man.

Blessed Joseph, to us too, show yourself a father

and guide us in the path of life. Obtain for us grace, mercy, and courage,

and defend us from every evil. Amen.

Liturgy Up-date: The Sign of Peace

We continue to try to move ahead to restore liturgical practices that were deferred because of Covid.

We have resumed the presentation of the gifts of bread and wine at the offertory.

Beginning this weekend, we will restore the “Sign of Peace” at Mass. Following the greeting, “May the Peace of the Lord be with you always” and the congregation’s response, the invitation will be extended, “Let us offer each other the Sign of Peace.” Actual handshakes outside of family groups might still make some uncomfortable, so we recommend congregants turn to others with a nod of the head or with a wave of the hand, to wish one another “Peace be with you.” The wish of peace to others is what is important, not the specific form.

The ministers of Holy Communion will continue to sanitize their hands and wear masks for the distribution of the Eucharist. We ask Extraordinary Ministers, as they feel more comfortable, to contact Deacon Jack McKenna to make themselves available to assist at Sunday liturgies and to be put on the schedule.

Beginning on the First Sunday of Advent, November 28, 2021, we will resume use of missalettes and music editions in the pews.

WE WELCOME THE NEWLY BAPTIZED

STEWARDSHIP ~ A Way of Life

“For the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (MARK 10:45) If we as Christian Stewards hold a mirror up to our lives, would it reflect God’s love and mercy? If you are struggling with this, try changing your attitude from “I want more” to “thank you God for everything you have given me, I have enough to share”. This change in perspective will bring you joy through service to others.

In today’s Gospel Jesus teaches His disciples that whoever wishes to be great among them must be a servant, just as He came to be a servant. We are constantly reminded of our call to be good stewards of the Gospel and to support those who make evangelization their servant ministry throughout the world. Not to be a servant of the Gospel would be poor stewardship. But how do we serve the Gospel in our daily lives? How do we support others who serve those who have never heard the Gospel or who have chosen to reject the Gospel of Jesus Christ?

Let us embrace a new awareness of our stewardship of the Church. Our Church is found in our parish at the Eucharistic celebration, at faith-formation gatherings, at our dinner table, in giving of our time at the soup kitchen, senior citizens’ home or the religious education of our young people. It is found in the many ways we give witness to the loving presence of Christ in a suffering world and offer hope. Let’s ask ourselves: “How am I stewarding our Church?”

All discipleship involves mission. The Bishops Pastoral Letter on Stewardship remind us, “Every member of the Church is called to evangelize, and the practice of authentic Christian stewardship inevitably leads to evangelization.” Let us pray that as Christian Stewards we joyfully bring Christ to others by sharing our time, talent and resources in love and justice, and that we may change our attitude of wanting more to being grateful and sharing more generously. This week, try to pray with extra sincerity. Let God in, and let Him heal your wounds. Let us pray for an increase of faith in our parish. Deacon Jack McKenna

BEWARE GIFT CARD SCAM We are aware that Cyber thieves are now going after your wallet in addition to your passwords by adopting a simple tactic to trick you into handing over your money. While not new, gift card scams are on the rise and can result in a victim losing hundreds or thousands of dollars. In the past few days employees and parishioners of St. Joseph Church have received an email or text that pretends to be from Msgr. Swiader. It asks them to " “Would you do me a favor” and buy gift cards and send them photos of the backs, for reasons that will supposedly be explained later. The scammer may even ask you to communicate with them via text message. In this email/text message scam, you are given a very plausible story as to why they need a gift card.

What you should do: • Ask yourself, "“Would Msgr. Swiader really ask me to do this?" • Call Msgr. Swiader to verify authenticity of the request. • Do not reply to the email. • Do not purchase any gift cards.

"If the Freedom of Speech is taken away, then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter." - George Washington The Importance of Faith to America's Founders: John Adams Throughout his life, this Founding Father and 2nd President of the United Sates, exhibited a profound respect for the Bible and refer-ences it frequently in his writings. He wrote to fellow Founder Benja-min Rush in 1807, "The Bible contains the most profound Philosophy, the most perfect Morality, and the most refined Policy, that ever was conceived upon the Earth." (4) About the newly written Constitution, he wrote, "Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious People. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."(5) The Founders knew a virtuous people would courageously defend the rights endowed by their Creator and restored by the blood of patri-ots. But a fearful people would readily give up these rights in ex-change for a fleeting sense of security. Princeton Professor Robbie George explains, "People lacking in virtue could be counted on to trade liberty for protection, for financial or per-sonal security, for comfort - for having their problems solved quick-ly."
