Google, Blackberry, Unilever and MobileGroove were amongst the leading organisations speaking at Mobile

Convention London when it was hosted at Church House Conference Centre last week (Thursday, March 26).

Mobile Convention London, a one-day event focussed on mobile engagement strategies, was being held in London

for the first time following on from the success of previous Mobile Conventions held in Amsterdam and Brussels.

The event, which attracted delegates from the mobile technology industry, included interactive presentations and panel

discussions with international speakers, networking round tables and a high tech playground, which was based in Church

House’s Assembly Hall..

Hodny Benazzi, General Manager of CM and founder of Mobile Convention London, comments: “The first Mobile Convention in

London was of high quality. Speakers, as well as the international delegates visiting, were keen on sharing experiences from the past and visions for the future. Mobile

Convention London and founding partner CM stepped back and gave a fair analysis on the rapidly changing mobile ecosystem. The event will be back in 2016 at Church

House, as an even bigger brand.” .

Robin Parker, General Manager of Church House, comments: “It was exciting to be a part of such a cutting edge event! London is becoming a global hub for technology so it

is fantastic news for the city that the organisers recognised its contributions to this booming industry by holding their event in London, and at Church House. As a venue

which prides itself on offering clients the latest technology, it was fascinating to see the array of mobile solutions on display during Mobile Convention London. Events are

becoming more interactive as organisations seek to improve delegate engagement and increase their return on investment. I’m sure we will see some of the gadgets on

display integrated into more meetings and events held at Church House in the very near future.” .

RELIGIOUS VENUES

Believe in the bestThe variety of faith-based venues offers rich pickings for organisers – but while many will call, not all will be chosen. John Keenan reports

hen event organisers go in search of

a venue, the last thing they expect is

to have doors closed in their face.

But when the buildings concerned have a

religious signifi cance and are, in some cases,

owned by a church organisation, the normal

rules of business can be waived.

It falls to Paul Southern, managing director

at Central Hall Westminster (pictured overleaf)

since 2011, to explain to his keen-as-mustard

sales force that not every piece of business is

worth chasing.

He said: “We turned down the premiere of

the latest series of Games of Thrones last

October because its themes are not

appropriate to a Methodist setting.

“When sales staff joins us they know the

rules. It can be frustrating, but they know from

the start that there are some grey areas.

Sometimes clients will try to disguise the true

nature of the meeting from us because they

know we will not fi nd it acceptable.

“We can’t have the promotion of drink or

gambling, for instance, and we have taken the

decision not to host any of the political parties’

events during the general election but we

would be able to hold debates.”

Victoria Steinitz, sales and marketing

manager at LSO St Lukes in London, said that

the operator at the venue has it on a long

lease from the Church of England which

stipulates it cannot do anything that is

inimical to the church.

She said: “As the church is no longer

consecrated that chiefl y means we can’t do

weddings and baptisms. But we also have to

be very sensitive to the fact that our

audiences may often include children and

vulnerable adults so we make sure that any

event we hold is appropriate. We don’t host

club nights for example.”

Rose Harding, development director at

Southwark Cathedral in London said that

while hard and fast rules are not set, staff

soon learn which events will be suitable and

which will not.

She said: “Conference bookers buy in for the

W

tranquility of this extraordinary setting with

the Shard to one side and Borough Market to

the other. Those at the cathedral on the sales

side continue to work creatively with offers to

delegates of baking bread in the market at

Bread Ahead and following that up with a

serious bit of kneading of admin at a workshop

back at the cathedral.”

But if keeping inappropriate events at bay is

one problem, an even graver issue is repelling

the attention of more sinister forces.

Murderous attacks in Paris and Denmark

have put all venue operators on alert.

Journalist and broadcaster David

Aaronovitch has revealed that armed police

were called on to patrol the area around the

JW3 events centre in North London when

he spoke on a panel about cartoonists

and politics.

Across the country security has been

stepped up at Jewish conference centres in the

wake of “heightened concern” about the risk

of anti-Semitic violence in the United Kingdom.

Operators of meeting venues and

community centres have been told to put up

warning signs in their venues.

It has emerged that more than 2,000 CCTV

cameras, almost 4,000 metres of perimeter

fencing and dozens of anti-ram bollards have

been put in place at Jewish buildings in the last

seven years.

Extra security measures at the venues have

cost more than £5m since 2008, according to

fi gures released by the Community Security

Trust (CST), a Jewish charity. New research

released by the trust shows that last year

anti-Semitic attacks reached the highest level

ever recorded in the UK.

That said, sectarian confl ict remains

mercifully rare in the United Kingdom and

the chief concern of venue operators is

how to accommodate the myriad

religious organisations.

Last year in Brighton and Hove, the city

council recorded 24 religious events

comprising Hindu, Coptic Christian, Roman

Catholic, Muslim, and the Brahma Kumaris

World Spiritual University.

Excel London’s biggest conference all

year – and possibly in the UK as a whole –

is the Festival of Life event. Forty

thousand delegates are expected

at Victoria Dock on 17 April for

this year’s event.

Liverpool City Council does not

record information regarding

meetings booked at its venues on

the basis of faith while Glasgow also

has no record of having organised any

meetings specifi cally with ‘faith groups’.

Perhaps they could take a leaf out of the

book of Birmingham City Council which

estimates that 973 faith group meetings have

been held at local authority venues in the last

six months. These include events by the Bible

of Church of God, the Hindu Youth Group,

Methodist ministers in training, the Sikh

Drumming Group and Swadhyay Parivar.

The International Convention Centre (ICC),

Birmingham welcomes four new religious

events to the venue this year.

The ‘Living Well Together’ Prayer

Breakfast was held at the ICC in February

with The Archbishop of Canterbury, followed

by the Birmingham Methodist Circuit ‘Holy

Habits’ event in May, the World Prayer

Centre in July and ‘Open Doors’ with Brother

Andrew in November.

of society’s heroes

Unsung heroes who have been

recognised for their contribution to

society joined together at Church

House Conference Centre for a

reception to mark the inaugural British

Citizen Awards (BCA).

The event at the Westminster venue

followed a presentation ceremony at

the end of January at the House of

Lords, at which 28 individuals were

recognised for the positive impact they

have had on society and presented

with a Medal of Honour.

Medals were presented for several

categories including for services to

community, volunteering and

charitable giving, business, industry,

health, education and overseas

achievement.

Following the presentation

ceremony, as one of the award’s

sponsors, Church House Conference

Centre hosted 100 guests in the Harvey

Goodwin Suite for a drinks reception.

Co-founder of the awards, Mike

Faulkner said: “It was a very moving

occasion as most receiving medals

were almost hesitant to accept

recognition for their enormous

contributions to society. Almost every

person receiving the honour was

humble and never expected recognition

for their efforts. There are literally

thousands of people across the UK

making life better for others, and until

now with no formal recognition open to

them. This programme has been

created to enable every individual

across the country to nominate

someone who they feel deserves to

be recognised.”

Church House Conference Centre’s

general manager Robin Parker said:

“We were delighted to be involved in

the event which celebrated some

amazing people. At the reception it was

really inspiring to hear many of the

recipient’s talk about their experiences.

Mayor of Birmingham. The Archbishop of

Canterbury addressed the group.

More than 1,000 attendees are

expected to attend the launch of the

Methodist Circuit ‘Holy Habits’

event in Mayin Hall 1 at the ICC.

The Trumpet Call, hosted by The

World Prayer Centre, comes to Hall

3 on 4 July, the ICC’s largest

conference room. Three thousand

delegates are expected.

Laurence Sharman, operations director for

The World Prayer Centre, said: “In the current

fi nancial, social, religious and political

situations in the UK, it is an important time for

the church to gather and pray in this climate of

uncertainty. The ICC is built on the site that

once housed The Bingley Hall, which from

1875 to the mid 1960’s was the site of many

historic Christian meetings.”

Open Doors with Brother Andrew celebrates

its 60th anniversary this year, culminating in

an event for 2,500 people at the ICC in

November. Catherine Newhall-Caiger, ICC

business development director, said she was

“delighted” the ICC was hosting these events.

“Our central location in the UK makes us an

ideal choice, offering ease of access for

attendees from the region and beyond.”

On a secular note, Church House

Conference Centre in London this year

welcomed the Women in Nuclear UK event.

The agenda was themed around addressing

gender balance in the nuclear industry.

Baroness Verma, Parliamentary Under

Secretary of State for the Department of

Energy and Climate Change presented the

keynote speech on gender balance and the

public acceptability of nuclear energy.

Church House Conference Centre will host the first World Congress for Existential Therapy when it comes to London

in May.

The four day event, which covers the themes of freedom, responsibility and the meaning of being, has been

organised by The New School of Psychotherapy and Counselling (NSPC) on behalf of the Existential Academy, and

will be held at the Westminster venue from 14-17 of May.

International keynote speakers from the field of existential therapy will address delegates, including Dr Irv Yalom who will appear

live via satellite using video conference facilities. Attendees will also participate in a variety of experiential workshops and live

demonstrations with existential experts, watch rare footages of classic existential masters as well as engaging in a variety of

lectures and debates with leading existential therapists and authors from all over the world.

Professor Emmy van Deurzen, Principal of the New School of Psychotherapy and Counselling, comments: “Church House is such a beautiful historic location. It is a great

location for our guests to be at and their wonderful staff will be able to support us in making the congress a success.”

Robin Parker, General Manager at Church House Conference Centre, comments: “We are excited to welcome this new event through the doors of Church House. It has

attracted an impressive range of international speakers and will allow members of the public to engage with existential therapy experts. Experiential models are becoming

increasingly popular and The World Congress for Existential Therapy should be a great example of how events can more fully engage with their audience. The event is

proving to be extremely popular as tickets for one of the days have already sold out and we expect a capacity crowd to be in attendance.”

Situated in the heart of Westminster Church House Conference Centre is one of London’s most versatile event venues. Its 19 flexible event spaces, which accommodate

between 2 and 664 guests, have the capacity to host a wide variety of events including meetings, conferences, awards ceremonies, gala dinners and receptions.

More than 200 event organisers and buyers were welcomed through the doors of Church House Conference Centre last Thursday (April 16) for its annual

showcase event.

Revel & Reveal was a chance for guests to sample Church House Conference Centre’s new menus, created in collaboration with its catering partners Harbour

& Jones Events. Breaking with tradition, the gala evening swapped from its traditional sit down dinner to an interactive and experiential reception as guests

were taken on a journey through the venue.

Guests were immersed into the streets of London, with food stalls representing Brick Lane, Borough Market, Fish Island and even a traditional East End pie and mash stall –

all of which offered an insight into the new menus which are focused on using locally sourced products.

To top the night off, the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA) Cabaret brought in a cast of 12 performers to celebrate the history of the West End, performing songs from

Cabaret through to Wicked and Les Miserable.

Robin Parker, General Manager of Church House Conference Centre, commented: “We decided to do something a little different for our gala evening in order to take guests,

especially those who are new to Church House, on a tour of the venue both in terms of the event spaces and culinary experience. Doing this gave us an opportunity to add

an experiential element by showing the many different concepts and ways in which the catering provided by Church House and Harbour & Jones Events can be tailored to

any event. Entertaining both existing and potential clients is something the whole team can get involved with, and our aim was to celebrate the best of London within the unique

surroundings of Church House, and from all the comments we have received it certainly seems we achieved that.”

As in previous years, instead of providing guests with goody bags both Church House made a donation to Dreams Come True, a UK charity for children and young people

with serious and life-limiting conditions.

Neal Stone, acting Chief Executive of the British Safety Council, congratulated Whittlebury Hall on

its success. “On behalf of the Trustees and staff of the British Safety Council we warmly

congratulate Whittlebury Hall and its employees on gaining an International Safety Award with

pass for 2015. All of those working at Whittlebury Hall have made this award possible, which

recognises their commitment to preventing injury and ill health in the workplace.

'It was also apparent that these winning organisations overall recognise the value that

proportionate and sensible management of occupational health and safety risks brings to the

organisation, its people and society.

'The International Labour Organisation estimates that every year over 2.3 million people globally

are senselessly killed due to workplace injury and work-related ill health and an estimated 4% of

global GDP is lost due to health and safety failure. Awards have an important role to play in shining

a light on those employers who are taking sensible and effective steps to ensure the health, safety

and welfare of their workers, celebrating their efforts and encouraging other businesses

everywhere.

'The International Safety Awards rightly reflects the importance of aiming for good standards of

health and safety at work. Whittlebury Hall should rightly be proud of its achievement. Our

congratulations.'

Michael Stott, Director of Whittlebury Hall and Spa Limited said 'We look forward to celebrating this

success at the Gala Dinner in London Friday 24th April 2015. The black-tie event will be hosted by

well known broadcaster and journalist Louise Minchin and will include formal presentation of our

award certificate.'

Church House opens doors for Revel and Reveal

Published on : Monday, April 20, 2015

More than 200 event organisers and buyers were welcomed

through the doors of Church House Conference Centre last

Thursday (April 16) for its annual showcase event.

Revel & Reveal was a chance for guests to sample Church House

Conference Centre’s new menus, created in collaboration with its

catering partners Harbour & Jones Events. Breaking with

tradition, the gala evening swapped from its traditional sit down

dinner to an interactive and experiential reception as guests

were taken on a journey through the venue.

Guests were immersed into the streets of London, with food stalls representing Brick Lane, Borough Market, Fish

Island and even a traditional East End pie and mash stall – all of which offered an insight into the new menus

which are focused on using locally sourced products.

To top the night off, the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA) Cabaret brought in a cast of 12 performers to

celebrate the history of the West End, performing songs from Cabaret through to Wicked and Les Miserable.

Robin Parker, General Manager of Church House Conference Centre, commented: “We decided to do something

a little different for our gala evening in order to take guests, especially those who are new to Church House, on

a tour of the venue both in terms of the event spaces and culinary experience. Doing this gave us an

opportunity to add an experiential element by showing the many different concepts and ways in which the

catering provided by Church House and Harbour & Jones Events can be tailored to any event. Entertaining both

existing and potential clients is something the whole team can get involved with, and our aim was to celebrate

the best of London within the unique surroundings of Church House, and from all the comments we have

received it certainly seems we achieved that.”

As in previous years, instead of providing guests with goody bags both Church House made a donation to

Dreams Come True, a UK charity for children and young people with serious and life-limiting conditions.

RELIGIOUS VENUES

Believe in the bestThe variety of faith-based venues offers rich pickings for organisers – but while many will call, not all will be chosen. John Keenan reports

hen event organisers go in search of

a venue, the last thing they expect is

to have doors closed in their face.

But when the buildings concerned have a

religious signifi cance and are, in some cases,

owned by a church organisation, the normal

rules of business can be waived.

It falls to Paul Southern, managing director

at Central Hall Westminster (pictured overleaf)

since 2011, to explain to his keen-as-mustard

sales force that not every piece of business is

worth chasing.

He said: “We turned down the premiere of

the latest series of Games of Thrones last

October because its themes are not

appropriate to a Methodist setting.

“When sales staff joins us they know the

rules. It can be frustrating, but they know from

the start that there are some grey areas.

Sometimes clients will try to disguise the true

nature of the meeting from us because they

know we will not fi nd it acceptable.

“We can’t have the promotion of drink or

gambling, for instance, and we have taken the

decision not to host any of the political parties’

events during the general election but we

would be able to hold debates.”

Victoria Steinitz, sales and marketing

manager at LSO St Lukes in London, said that

the operator at the venue has it on a long

lease from the Church of England which

stipulates it cannot do anything that is

inimical to the church.

She said: “As the church is no longer

consecrated that chiefl y means we can’t do

weddings and baptisms. But we also have to

be very sensitive to the fact that our

audiences may often include children and

vulnerable adults so we make sure that any

event we hold is appropriate. We don’t host

club nights for example.”

Rose Harding, development director at

Southwark Cathedral in London said that

while hard and fast rules are not set, staff

soon learn which events will be suitable and

which will not.

She said: “Conference bookers buy in for the

W

tranquility of this extraordinary setting with

the Shard to one side and Borough Market to

the other. Those at the cathedral on the sales

side continue to work creatively with offers to

delegates of baking bread in the market at

Bread Ahead and following that up with a

serious bit of kneading of admin at a workshop

back at the cathedral.”

But if keeping inappropriate events at bay is

one problem, an even graver issue is repelling

the attention of more sinister forces.

Murderous attacks in Paris and Denmark

have put all venue operators on alert.

Journalist and broadcaster David

Aaronovitch has revealed that armed police

were called on to patrol the area around the

JW3 events centre in North London when

he spoke on a panel about cartoonists

and politics.

Across the country security has been

stepped up at Jewish conference centres in the

wake of “heightened concern” about the risk

of anti-Semitic violence in the United Kingdom.

Operators of meeting venues and

community centres have been told to put up

warning signs in their venues.

It has emerged that more than 2,000 CCTV

cameras, almost 4,000 metres of perimeter

fencing and dozens of anti-ram bollards have

been put in place at Jewish buildings in the last

seven years.

Extra security measures at the venues have

cost more than £5m since 2008, according to

fi gures released by the Community Security

Trust (CST), a Jewish charity. New research

released by the trust shows that last year

anti-Semitic attacks reached the highest level

ever recorded in the UK.

That said, sectarian confl ict remains

mercifully rare in the United Kingdom and

the chief concern of venue operators is

how to accommodate the myriad

religious organisations.

Last year in Brighton and Hove, the city

council recorded 24 religious events

comprising Hindu, Coptic Christian, Roman

Catholic, Muslim, and the Brahma Kumaris

Excel London’s biggest conference all

year – and possibly in the UK as a whole –

is the Festival of Life event. Forty

thousand delegates are expected

at Victoria Dock on 17 April for

this year’s event.

Liverpool City Council does not

record information regarding

meetings booked at its venues on

the basis of faith while Glasgow also

has no record of having organised any

meetings specifi cally with ‘faith groups’.

Perhaps they could take a leaf out of the

book of Birmingham City Council which

estimates that 973 faith group meetings have

been held at local authority venues in the last

six months. These include events by the Bible

of Church of God, the Hindu Youth Group,

Methodist ministers in training, the Sikh

Drumming Group and Swadhyay Parivar.

The International Convention Centre (ICC),

Birmingham welcomes four new religious

events to the venue this year.

The ‘Living Well Together’ Prayer

Breakfast was held at the ICC in February

with The Archbishop of Canterbury, followed

by the Birmingham Methodist Circuit ‘Holy

Centre in July and ‘Open Doors’ with Brother

The event at the Westminster venue

followed a presentation ceremony at

the end of January at the House of

Lords, at which 28 individuals were

recognised for the positive impact they

have had on society and presented

with a Medal of Honour.

Medals were presented for several

categories including for services to

community, volunteering and

charitable giving, business, industry,

health, education and overseas

achievement.

Following the presentation

ceremony, as one of the award’s

sponsors, Church House Conference

Centre hosted 100 guests in the Harvey

Goodwin Suite for a drinks reception.

Co-founder of the awards, Mike

Faulkner said: “It was a very moving

occasion as most receiving medals

were almost hesitant to accept

recognition for their enormous

contributions to society. Almost every

person receiving the honour was

humble and never expected recognition

for their efforts. There are literally

thousands of people across the UK

making life better for others, and until

now with no formal recognition open to

them. This programme has been

created to enable every individual

across the country to nominate

someone who they feel deserves to

be recognised.”

Church House Conference Centre’s

general manager Robin Parker said:

“We were delighted to be involved in

the event which celebrated some

amazing people. At the reception it was

really inspiring to hear many of the

recipient’s talk about their experiences.

Mayor of Birmingham. The Archbishop of

Canterbury addressed the group.

More than 1,000 attendees are

expected to attend the launch of the

event in Mayin Hall 1 at the ICC.

The Trumpet Call, hosted by The

World Prayer Centre, comes to Hall

3 on 4 July, the ICC’s largest

conference room. Three thousand

delegates are expected.

Laurence Sharman, operations director for

The World Prayer Centre, said: “In the current

fi nancial, social, religious and political

situations in the UK, it is an important time for

the church to gather and pray in this climate of

uncertainty. The ICC is built on the site that

once housed The Bingley Hall, which from

1875 to the mid 1960’s was the site of many

historic Christian meetings.”

Open Doors with Brother Andrew celebrates

its 60th anniversary this year, culminating in

an event for 2,500 people at the ICC in

November. Catherine Newhall-Caiger, ICC

business development director, said she was

“delighted” the ICC was hosting these events.

“Our central location in the UK makes us an

ideal choice, offering ease of access for

attendees from the region and beyond.”

On a secular note, Church House

Conference Centre in London this year

welcomed the Women in Nuclear UK event.

The agenda was themed around addressing

gender balance in the nuclear industry.

Baroness Verma, Parliamentary Under

Secretary of State for the Department of

Energy and Climate Change presented the

keynote speech on gender balance and the

public acceptability of nuclear energy.

Home News Venues & Events Church House AV Manager runs to support Macmillan Cancer

Category: Venues & Events Created on Tuesday, 28 April 2015 14:00

Church House Conference Centre’s AV Manager was one of many thousands of runners raising funds for charity in the Virgin

Money London Marathon 2015.

Ian Locke switched his computer and sound-desk for a pair of trainers to run the 26.2 miles on Sunday in aid of Macmillan Cancer

Support. Although Ian had an injury and was unable to train properly for the last four weeks, he completed the course in a time of

4hours 36minutes 36sec.

Thanks to his determination and creativity, Ian raised £2,350 (including gift aid) for the charity by selling advertising space on his running shirt

as well as organising an Easter Raffle and cake sale at Church House. Alongside Church House Conference Centre, Ian has received support

from many different sponsors including AV Communications, Jacobs Massey Recruitment, Digital Message, Hawthorns and C.O.S and the total

is still rising.

Ian’s passion for the cause inspired him to work extra hard in his training regime, dedicating eight hours a week in order to get over the finish

line.

Macmillan Cancer Support is close to Ian’s heart. He says: “I’ve got a close friend who has had cancer three times and Macmillan Cancer Support have helped her. They

supported her when she had no money to even pay the rent and they helped her out to keep her going, especially when I was unable to help as much as I wanted to. I am

grateful to all the people who supported me in running the marathon and ultimately supporting Macmillan Cancer Support.”

Robin Parker, General Manager at Church House Conference, comments: “On behalf of the whole team at Church House I would like to congratulate Ian for completing the

London Marathon in aid of a very worthy cause. All the staff have gotten behind his efforts, including our head chef Norman who provided the cupcakes for Ian’s cake sale.

We are delighted he has raised so much money for Macmillan Cancer Support as it is something we know is very important to him.”

of the Children’s Society, the organisation hosted a post-race party at Church House

Conference Centre.

More than 80 runners took part in the annual race for the charity which works to support

vulnerable children in England and Wales. Following the 26.2 mile race, the runners

Children’s Charity has hosted the event at Church House.

Natalie Tarrant, Regional Fundraising Development Manager for the Children’s Society,

commented: “Our post-race party is an opportunity to thank the dedicated team, who have

been training hard to run the 26.2 miles and raising vital funds to support our work.

Through our campaigning, commitment and care, we are determined to give every child in
