Lilley, who sparked con- troversy with Summer Heights High, is likely to be lauded by fans but critic- ised by some for how he tackles race issues in Angry Boys, a co- production with America’s HBO network. He plays six characters, whose connection to each other will be revealed as the show progresses. Twins Daniel and Nath- an Sims, featured in We Can Be Heroes, are back. New characters are the twins’ grandmother Ruth ‘‘Gran’’ Sims, black rapper S.mouse, surfer Blake Oak- field and Japanese Jen Okazaki, mum of a ‘‘gay’’ skateboarding champ. Lil- ley believes only those who ‘‘don’t get’’ his humour will be offended. Lilley found the S.mouse character one of his big- gest challenges; he wrote and composed the songs in Angry Boys and had to per- form to a live audience. How S.mouse is received in the US (it will screen on HBO) remains to be seen. ‘‘It’s more about the send-up of the (hip-hop) in- dustry and that world. It’s not really about black peo- ple, in a way. (HBO) have seen a lot of episodes and love it,’’ Lilley says. Angry Boys premieres on ABC1 May 11
