Students will be immersed in the language and culture of the world’s most populous country and the cultural treasure-house of East Asia with 5,000 years of tumultuous history.

In China they will come face-to-face with one of Australia’s major trading partners, be confronted by its many paradoxes and experience first-hand the emerging powerhouse of the 21st century as it charges forward at a pace and scale unprecedented in world history.

They will be introduced to the Middle Kingdom's ancient cultures, challenged by its sheer size and engaged in the amazing contrast with contemporary China.

They will stand in awe of the ingenuity of mankind at the Great Wall, feel the power of imperial China in the Forbidden City and the rapidly emerging modern power in Tiananmen Square, touch Old China in the narrow lanes and quadrangles of the hutongs and recognise the struggle of more than 1 billion Chinese in the last century at the collective farms.

Beyond Beijing, China offers unique experiences including a tour to the Yangtze River, Xian’s Terracotta Warriors, the 26 tribes of Yunnan province, Huangzhou's famous sacred mountain and the mega-city of Shanghai with its riverside Bund and ultra-contemporary business district.

Highlights include bargaining in the markets for everything from souvenirs to jewellery, bags and shoes; earning the right to wear a “I climbed the Great Wall Of China” T-shirt; experiencing the unique calm of starting the day with Tai Chi; and the warmth and hospitality of the Chinese as students bridge the culture gap.
