Building your story with the Chekhov mobile phone App By Megan Rademeyer

1.Having
downloaded the Chekhov App from
the Store, open the App and click on the ‘Get Started’
arrow.
2.Any stories you
have already started will appear
in the My Stories list. To create a
new story, click the ‘+’ icon at the bottom of the
screen.
3.Type in the name of your story, and then click on the
green tick. You will now see
your new story in the ‘My Stories’
list.
4.Select your new
story and add information such as your name as the author; the
language the story is written in; and a short description.
5.Now scroll down,
and choose where your story will be
available. [Hint: tick the boxes for
‘South Africa’ ‘United Kingdom’,
‘United States’, and ‘Rest Of World’]
6.Choose ‘All
available markets’ under the Publish
to Windows Phone icon & tick the box under the Publish
to Print icon. Then click the
green arrow.
7.You are now ready
to write your story!
Click the ‘+’ icon at the bottom of the
screen to create your first page.
8.Click ‘Choose Template’ to
decide how you want your page to
look – you can have a picture at
the top, or on either side of your
text.
9.For this page, we
have chosen ‘Image on top, text
on left’ – but you can change the layout for each page you write.
10.Click inside the text
box and type in your text. It will
automatically be saved.
When you are finished, click on
the picture icon to add an image.
11.You can choose from any image stored on your
phone - or click the Camera icon to
take a picture there and then!
12.Your picture is automatically added to your
page. Now click the ‘+’ icon to add another page, and
follow the same steps until all
pages are done.
13.Once all of your pages are done you can record
your audio narration.
Go to P1 and click on the ‘Record’
icon.
14.First record the
Page.Click the ‘record’ icon and
speak in time with the highlighted text. Click the ‘play’ icon
to listen back. You can re-record as
needed.
15.Next record each
individual Word. Click the ‘record’ icon - then
click on a word, speaking immediately. Repeat for each word on the page. Click the
‘play’ icon to listen back & re-record as needed.
16.Once you have
recorded the audio for each Page and Word
you can see what your finished story will look
like when it’s published! Just click the ‘Preview’
icon at the bottom of the screen.
17.You can use Preview at any time to see how a page
will look to a reader. When you’re finished, click the ‘Home’ icon to return to your My Stories page.
18.All done? Happy with how your story looks and
sounds? Then click on the ‘…’ icon at the top of the screen.
19.Click ‘publish’ to submit your finished story for
review and for publication around the world.
20.Chekhov will
automatically check that you haven’t missed
anything - and will let you know if you have!
Choose the ‘edit’ icon to make any changes,
then submit it again.
21.That’s it! Your story will be stored on your phone & sent for publication the next time you connect
to wifi or to your network data service. Once approved, it will appear in the App Store for
people across the world to download and enjoy
