Wow! What a beautiful summer we had here in Newfoundland and Labrador! Definite-ly one for the record books!
It was a busy Summer for everyone, I’m sure! There have been a lot changes this year for our provincial coding team, as we’ve experienced one of the most significant change years since moving from ICD-9 to ICD-10-CA. Many of our non-coding members have also experienced similar changes in workflow and systems, as we, as HIM professionals, continue to be involved in many facets of the health care system.
Mid-September, I attended the CHIMA Chapter Advisory Council meetings as well as the CHIMA Conference in beautiful Niagara Falls. The conference theme was “DATA: A VITAL RESOURCE” and it was a very engaging and educational conference. See page 4 for more details.
Don’t forget to check out our latest educational offering, a presentation on “Stroke Care and Outcomes: Referral and Documentation Gaps” by Cassie Chisholm which is availa-ble for all members to view. It’s a great presentation with a lot of detail on Stroke Care, particularly in Newfoundland and Labrador, and members who register and complete the session will receive 1.5 CPE credits! We hope you all will take advantage of this and all the other great education sessions offered by all the CHIMA Chapters – it’s an easy way to ensure you get your required CPE credits!
The CHIMA NL Chapter Education Task Team remains busy with securing presenters for other education sessions so keep your eyes out for new sessions to come.
The CHIMA Chapter Advisory Council has rolled out a new Leadership Recruitment program so if you are interested in becoming a member of the CHIMA NL Chapter , visit the Newfoundland and Labrador Chapter section on the CHIMA website for more information: https://nl.echima.ca/home
Location: This 1-hour 37-minute presentation is available 24/7
The NL Chapter of CHIMA is pleased to offer a free 1-hour 37-minute session about stroke coding entitled: “Stroke Care and Outcomes: Referral and Documentation Gaps” Presented by Cassie Chisholm.
Cassie’s presentation focusses on stroke coding, and touches on such topics as critical steps in early stroke management as well as common post-stroke complications and metrics. Cassie, a trained physiotherapist who graduated from Dalhousie University in 2001, has worked almost exclusively in the Newfoundland public healthcare system in various capacities associated with stroke care. She acted as the Regional Stroke Coordi-nator in for Eastern Health for 6 years and is set to move into a new role as a Primary Health Care Manager.
The session is worth 1.5 CPE credits.
To register for this event please visit www.echima.ca under the News &

CHIMA has a new CEO!
Jeff Nesbit was appointed by the CHIMA Board of Di-
rectors as the new Chief Executive Officer and Regis-
trar, effective August 7, 2018. While we are sad to see
our former CEO, Gail Crook, move on to the next
chapter of her life, we are excited to see how Jeff
helps move CHIMA forward into the future.
