Hayom Yom: Chaf Hey Kislev

My father would kindle Chanuka lights between Mincha and Maariv; he was not particular whether the doorway was south-north or east-west. Haneirot halalu he said after kindling all the lights. He would sit near the lights for a half hour, except Fridays when he did not stay that long. He took care that the lights burned at least 50 minutes. The order we follow on a Friday is: Mincha,

Chanukah lights, then Shabbat candles.

Reb Pesachya from Kherson was a chassid of the Rebbe Rashab, the fifth rebbe of Chabad-Lubavitch. Once, at a Simchat Torah gathering with the rebbe, Reb Pesachya—having already said l'chaim once or twice—stood up and declared:"The Rebbe always says that he does not perform miracles—but I have a story to tell! "One summer, I had a private audience with the Rebbe, and the Rebbe told me the following: 'You work in the forests, and sometimes you even need to spend a few days in a row in the forest. When Chanukah arrives, don't forget to bring candles with you. Just make sure that they are big candles.' "When Chanukah arrived, I indeed needed to spend a few days in the forest. Recalling the Rebbe's words, I brought some large candles with me. "While in the forest, thieves came upon me, took all my money and said they were going to kill me. I pleaded with them to spare my life, but they said they could not do so, since I would certainly go to the police, who would then pursue them. They said they had no choice but to kill me. "My continued pleading went nowhere. I asked them if I could have one final request, and they agreed. It is Chanukah, I said, and our tradition requires us to light candles each night. Out of their 'great compassion,' they permitted me to light my candles. "As I was lighting the candles, a local landowner passed nearby and saw the light. He had a revolver with him, chased away the robbers and saved me." Concluding his story, Reb Pesachya said, "Is that not a miracle?!" The Rebbe Rashab said: “Zogt a niggun!” "Someone start a song!" Glittery Chanukah Snow globeYou will need:

● 1 glass jar● 2 dreidels (wood or plastic)● Glitter● Water● Glycerin● Hot glue● Stuffing

Directions:

1. Decide if you’d like to use plastic or wooden dreidels. Wooden ones will get moldy from the water as time goes on, so if you’re using wooden dreidels, coat them with clear nail polish first.

2. Use hot glue to attach the first dreidel to the inside of the jar lid. The dreidel should be lying down flat. Make sure it is not jutting out over the edge of the lid, so it fits in the jar. Then use hot glue to attach the second dreidel to the first one. This will be the dreidel that will be visible, so position it carefully.

3. Place some stuffing around the base dreidel. Use the hot glue to attach it to the lid.4. Set the lid aside to dry. Do not continue if the glue isn’t fully dry.5. Fill the jar with water. Add 1-2 tablespoons of glycerin. Pour in some glitter. Mix. (The glycerin will make the glitter fall more slowly.)6. Make sure the jar is filled to the very top. Then screw the lid on tightly. Turn over and watch the glitter fall.7. Optional: Decorate the rim with ribbon or Washi tape. Decorate the outside of the jar with Chanukah stickers.8. Shake and enjoy watching the glitter fall.

Day Three:

בס’ד

There once was a lady, who decided to go off the path of Yiddishkeit… The only thing, she still continued doing, was celebrating Chanukah. She would decorate the house and light the Menorah with her young daughter… One day, She noticed an invitation to a grand big menorah lighting. She decided to go and dressed her daughter up for it. The crowd was small. She planned to right after the Menorah lighting, to drive away, but a Shliach stopped her... He handed the daughter a Menorah necklace and asked. “Are you part of any Jewish Synagogue?” “No!” The lady answered. The Shliach then invited her to come to shul. She actually ended up coming and enjoying herself! A few weeks later, after a lot of convincing, she sent her daughter to Sunday School! Look what one Menorah lighting could do!

Just like olives are full oil. So to, a Yid’s body consists a

brightens the whole world. So to, when a Yid does a Mitzvah, he

Thought of the Day: A mitzvah is compared to a candle and

the Torah is light."

We should always try to increase our level of Torah and

Mitzvot. If we did one good deed yesterday, let us try to

increase and do more today. Like the Chanukah candles, we

are meant to add light every day.

The Baal Shem Tov, founder of the Chassidic movement,

said: "The Hebrew word for light is 'Or' - the numerical

equivalent of 'raz' (inner secret). Whoever knows the 'secret'

contained in every thing can bring illumination."

Day #6Thought of Day: The

light of the Chanukah

candles is holy, like

the light of the

Menorah in the Beit

HaMikdash. We are

careful not to use it

for any purpose —

our Mitzvah is just to

look at the candles

and listen to the

story that they tell.

Day 7בס’ד

Hayom Yom Of The Day:

The goal of the Greeks was aimed to "make them forget Your Torah and violate the decrees of Your will" (Sidur p. 59); as the Midrash (Bereishit Raba 16) puts it, (the Greeks demanded) "Write...that you have no share in the G-d of Israel." It was a war against G-d. "Let them study Torah," the Greeks implied. "Let them practice torah and mitzvos. But they must not mention that the Torah is G-d's Torah and the mitzvot are the decrees of His will. Torah and mitzvot must be divided from G-dliness."

Day #8 Thought of the Day: With

tremendous joy, the Jews cleansed the Beit HaMikdash and began to serve Hashem once again! Nowadays, we have to draw on that joy, because the darkness has grown very great! That's why we make Chanukah parties, with dreidels, latkes, and Chanukah gelt. Joy has the power to overcome any negative thing, and break any evil decree!

1. Cut the potato in half. Push the cookie cutter into the potato. Cut around the sides of the cookie cutter and remove the extra potato off. You should now have a

dreidel shape protruding out of the potato.

2. With your brush, paint the dreidel shaped potato and stamp onto the plate. Repeat as desired.

3. Using the tip on your paint bottle, draw an outline around the dreidel shape. Personalize with names and design polka dots or swirls.

4. Bake in an oven at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Let it cool on its own inside the oven. If you do not want to set the plate inside the oven, then let it sit out for 21

days and it will cure on its own.

You are now ready to use your plate! Wrap it up as a gift or stack those oily latkes onto it. When you’re finished, just wash your plate with warm water and a soft

sponge and the paint will never come off.

You will need:

● Potato

● Dreidel cookie cutter

● Knife

● Martha Stewart Glass Paints (Glossy)

● Brush

● Ceramic Plate
