Formed in 1971, the award-winning Channahon Park District maintains numerous parks and facilities, and plans a variety of programs and activities for all ages throughout the year. The Channahon Park District of-fers something for everyone!

In 2014 the Park District achieved standing as an Illinois Distinguished Accredited Park and Recreation Agency. This recognition is made by the Illinois Park and Recreation Association and the Illinois Association of Park Districts, confirming the Channahon Park District provides exceptional park and recreation services to the community. Less than 50 park and recreation agen-cies in Illinois have received this recognition.

The Channahon Park District operates many of the area’s pre-mier recreation destinations. Heritage Bluffs Public Golf Club is a nationally rated 18 hole golf course. A complete golf shop and a full service restaurant provide every amenity for golfers and non-golfers alike. The course is also designated as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, the 27th course in Illinois and the 379th in the world to receive the honor, in recognition of the course’s environmental stewardship practices.

Heritage Crossing Field House, features two gymnasiums, a three lane, eight lap to the mile indoor track, and Dimensions Fitness Center. The part-nership with Channahon School District 17 to build the facility has received national attention for innovation, cost sharing and community cooperation.

Tomahawk Aquatic Center is an outdoor family water park that hosts 28,000 swimmers annually. A waterslide and zero depth pool highlight the facility, which also includes expansive deck and sunning areas, and special water and sand play areas for kids. The Park District’s Learn to Swim program provides 1,100 kids annually with important lifetime skills in swimming.

Arrowhead Community Center houses Park District offices and indoor program space, including a dance/aerobics studio, two racquetball courts, and the popular Kids Connection Preschool Program.

Skateland Recreation Center offers indoor roller skating, space for ban-quets, receptions and other special events.

The Channahon Park District has over 360 acres of public parks. Major facilities include 178 acre Community Park, 48 acre Central Park, 166 acres at Heritage Bluffs Public Golf Club and the newest additional of 76 acre Arroyo Trails, a Discovery Woodlands. These locations include lighted sports fields, trails, playgrounds and picnic space. Community Park includes a Disc Golf course and a trail system. Central Park is the home of SK8 Zone skate park and serves as the location for the community’s annual Three Rivers Festival. Neighborhood parks are currently located in 18 areas, with four new locations planned!

If you’re seeking recreational opportunities, want to improve your health, socialize, be on a team, enjoy time with family and friends, learn a new skill, of just have fun, turn to the Channahon Park District. For more information on the Park District programs, facilities and activities visit www.channahon-park.org or call 815-467-PARK (7275).

CHANNAHON STATE PARKLocated along Canal Street on the west side of the Village, [ http://dnr.state.il.us/lands/landmgt/parks/i&m/east/channaho/home.htm ]Chan-nahon State Park is a monument to the Illinois & Michigan Canal Locks and Dam and the head of the I & M Canal State Trail. The park was a project of the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. In addition to picturesque scenery, the park features bike and hiking trails, fishing, and picnic areas. For more information, contact 815/467-4271.

MCKINLEY WOODS FOREST PRESERVEThe Will County Forest Preserve District’s McKin-ley Woods is located on McKinley Woods Road just south of the Highlands subdivision. The pre-serve is a scenic place for picnicking, hiking, or biking along the I & M Canal. Tent camping is al-lowed with a permit, as well as fishing. For more information, contact the [ http://www.fpdwc.org/ ]Will County Forest Preserve at 815/727-8700.

I & M CANAL NATIONAL HERITAGE CORRIDORChannahon is fortunate to be located along the beautiful and winding I & M Canal, which is the centerpiece of the [ http://www.canalcor.org/ ]National Heritage Corridor. In the 1960s and 1970s, interest in the Canal was resurrected and the population once again saw the importance of the I & M Canal in history and as a recreational link for the present and future. The 100-mile urban cultural park was created in 1984 to preserve this Illinois landmark and to provide the public with a variety of historical, recreational, and natural resources to enjoy. This was the nation’s first national heritage corridor. In 1998, the 150th anniversary of the opening of the I & M Canal was celebrated.

DES PLAINES FISH AND WILDLIFE AREALocated just south of Channahon, the [ http://dnr.state.il.us/lands/landmgt/parks/i&m/east/desplain/park.htm ]Des Plaines Fish and Wildlife Area is a popular place for fishing, hunting, trap shooting, camping, and picnicking. The area features a nature preserve, game farm, and waterfowl refuge.

BRISCOE MOUNDSThe Briscoe Mounds archaeological site is located on Front Street along the Des Plaines River. The Mounds are the largest Native American burial mounds in northern Illinois. The site is owned by the Illinois State Museum. A museum and visitor/cultural center is proposed for construction on the site. This facility would help educate residents and visitors about the I

& M Canal’s importance to the region, the area’s Native American heritage, the settlement of Northern Illinois, and current recreational and cultural activities offered throughout the area.

DUPAGE RIVER TRAIL & WATER TRAILThe DuPage River Trail is a bike and pedestrian trail that follows the DuPage River from the I & M Canal at Lake Chaminwood north along the West Branch to Illinois Prairie Path in Naperville and along on the East Branch to the DuPage County’s Forest Preserve’s Greene Valley Preserve in Lisle. When completed the trail will be 29 miles long. The DuPage River Water Trail, established to pro-vide non-motorized boating on the DuPage River, runs from Hanover Park to Bolingbrook/Naper-ville along the West Branch, Glendale Heights to Bolingbrook/Naperville along the east Branch and Bolingbrook/Naperville to Channahon along the Main Branch.

The Village of Minooka is a charming community founded in 1869 along the route of the Rock Island Railroad. Minooka is Pottawatomie for “Good Land.” Transportation has played an important role in the development of the community. More convenient access was made available when Interstate 80 was built in the 1960’s with access ramps to Minooka. According to the 2010 census, the population of Minooka is 10,924. However, residential growth is not the only growth, the commercial and industrial growth has followed the residential boom, providing necessary services, jobs, and a balanced tax base.

MCCABE INSURANCE AND REAL ESTATE GROUP

McCabe Insurance and Real Estate Group moved their office to Minooka one year ago in May 2013. Agency owner, Chris McCabe, welcomed the move from New Lenox to Minooka as she and her key employee Maggie Hargis both live in Channahon. After having been in New Lenox for 4 years, moving her office to Minooka was like coming full circle and she felt as if she was “home”. Chris & Maggie consider themselves fortunate to be able to work so close to home and help the residents and friends in the Chanooka area.

Chris McCabe, a lifelong resident of Will County has been a Realtor since 1991. When the Real Estate market crashed in 2008 she, like many others affected by the down turn of the Real Estate market, found she had to reinvent herself. Chris decided to become an Insurance Agent and was fortunate to open her own Insurance Agency in 2009 in New Lenox. The upswing in the Real Estate market motivated Chris to upgrade her Real Estate license and open her own Real Estate office. Chris is now the Managing Broker and owner of McCabe Real Estate Group.

McCabe Insurance has a fully licensed staff and can offer you the luxury of shopping around for your Insurance with just one phone call. As an Independent Insurance Broker, McCabe Insurance has several top carriers such as Pekin, Travelers, Hartford, AAA, SafeCo, MetLife, Progressive and more. Representing several carriers allows you the ability to easily shop for the best coverage at the best price. In addition to your basic Home, Auto, Life , Commercial General Liability and Workers Comp, McCabe Insurance can help you with all of your Specialty Market coverages such as vacant properties, Professional Liability and E & O, Trucking, Restaurants, Home Owners Associations, Manufacturers, Contractors and much more. If you need it insured, McCabe Insurance has a carrier for you. It is important to review your insurance annually. You will feel comfortable bringing your policies to McCabe Insurance for review and consultation.

BIG FISH GRILLE

The Big Fish Grille opened in 2009 by owner John Mathias. John grew up on the east coast and moved to Chicago in the 1980’s. He opened the Big Fish to bring some of those favorite eastern delicacies to the midwest.

The menu continually changes with seasonal ingredients. Big Fish offers classic cocktails, martini’s and wine. The Big Fish Late Night features live music during the summer. They offer custom catering services and host parties at the restaurant.

The Big Fish Grille is located at the Harborside Marina at 27425 South Will Road, Wilmington, Illinois 60481.
