!Change – yet again?
Lately Denmark has been following the American election intensely. And with good reason. Because it is also important to us which decisions will be made in future. Therefore our class has written a web-newspaper in the days leading up to the election on November 6th. We have not written the same usual things as in regular newspapers. We have focused on the campaigns, the candidates, the voters, the hurricane Sandy's effect on the election and much more. After four years with President Obama, it could be time for change (yet again). The essence of the American election is likeability and competition. It is the excitement in the final outcome. But the competition and campaigning has reached a whole new level in this election. No matter how hard you study the polls, they really don't say much about the final outcome. Are the two candidates really that close, or is it just the medias making it seem that way? Is “believe in America” that different from “forward”? No matter what - an exciting time is ahead. Take a stand. Enjoy. - 2.d, Københavns Åbne Gymnasium !!!

He was born on the 4th of August 1961 in
Honolulu, Hawaii. His father, Barrack
Hussein Obama sr. was from Kenya in Africa,
and moved to the United States in 1959. He
came to America through an assistance
program for promising students from Kenya.
In 1960 he met Ann Dunham, who a year
later, gave birth to Barrack Hussein Obama Jr.
When Barrack Jr. was 2 years old, his dad left
the family to get a doctor degree and never
came back. His dad died in a car crash in
1982 and his mom died of cancer in 1995.
Great potential
Obama showed great potential in school and
got a scholarship from one of the better high
schools in Waikiki, Honolulu. After that, he
got another scholarship at Occidental College
in Los Angeles. After two years, he was
transferred to Columbia and graduated in
1983. In 1991 he graduated from Harvard
University in Law.
In 1992 he got married to Michelle LaVaughn
Robinson. They met when they worked
together at the Law firm. Now they have two
daughters, Malia 14 years old and Natasha
(known as Sasha) 11 years old.
In 2008, Obama was nominated by the
democrats to be their presidential candidate,
with Joe Biden as Vice-presidential candidate.
His competitor was John McCain; and as we
know, Obama won. Now the question is: Who
will win this time?

Willard Mitt Romney. The 65 year old
American businessman and politician is the
presidential candidate of the Republican Party
for the election of the president of the United
States of America. From 2003 to 2007 he was
governor of Massachusetts and has tried to
5 !
become the candidate for the election twice.
The first time was in 2008.
Religious family
He was born on the 12th of March 1947 in
Bloomfield Hills, Michigan by Lenore and
George W. Romney.
His ancestors go way back, to when the
Mormon Church was founded in the first half
of the 1800’s. Therefore it was natural for
Mitt himself to be a part of the Latter Day
Saint movement.
When he was 19 year old, Romney went to
France as a missionary, and stayed there for
two and a half year. He came back in 1969
and married Ann Davies.
Heavy finance
He went to Harvard to study business
administration. Besides that, he has got a
bachelor of arts and a doctorate in law. He
finished from Harvard in 1975 and in ’77 he
began a career in Bain & company, a global
management consulting firm, headquartered
in Boston.
In ’84 he was part of the founders of Bain
Capital, a highly profitable investment
company, which was to become one of the
biggest and most powerful ones of its kind in
the United States, by his lead.
Til ’94 he was head of the local Mormon
congregation, running on the side of his
career in the financial business; but he
stepped back in both positions, to follow in
the footsteps of his father.
Politics and winter sports
Mitts father, George W. Romney, was the
former governor of Michigan. But when the
son ran for the 1994 Massachusetts election
for the U.S. Senate, he lost to Ted Kennedy
who stayed in the position until his death in
2009.
Mitt Romney went back to his position in
Bain Capital, but after an advantageous and
crucial position in the Salt Lake City Winter
Olympics Organizing Committee, he
launched his political career once again. From
2003 til 2007 he was the governor of
Massachusetts. In 2007 he began the
campaigning for election for the 2008
presidential candidate, but lost to John
McCain. Since 2011, he have prepared for the
2012 election which will be held in
November.

grandchildren with his wife Ann Romney.

In the occasion of the presidential election we
have asked three American citizens whom
they will vote for. They all come from the
swing state Michigan, so it is an important
state in the American election.
David Hildebrand 25 years old, Michigan
Who do you vote for?
⁃ Barak Obama
Why?
⁃ I think the healthcare is an important
subject, and I like the way Obama is
handling it. I don’t really find either of
the candidates perfect president, but I
am voting for Obama because his
politics is not as bad as Romney’s.
Why not Mitt Romney?
⁃ Because he plans to grow the number of
military personnel and he wants to cut
spending, but raise military
expenditures.
Jane Hildebrand 51 years old, Michigan
Who do you vote for?
⁃ Barak Obama
Why?
- Maybe it’s true that Obama hasn’t
accomplish all his promises, but I believe that
Obama still trying to clean up all that mess
that Bush have cost. Obama should have
another four years to make good on his
promises
Why not Mitt Romney?
- Because he supports the patriot act, he
wants to legislate job growth and he opposes
efforts to reduce the US military budget.
Stewart Hildebrand 23 years old, Michigan
Who do you vote for?
⁃ Barak Obama
Why?
- We all deserve to live decently in a decent
society.
Why not Mitt Romney?
- Because Romney has no interest in the
Federal Reserve.

DEMOCRATS VS REPUBLICANS
By Laura, Kristian, Benjamin and Otso

The Democrats
The Democrats, on the other hand, is a
more modern aspect of American
liberty. They base their political views
on modern liberalism. They believe in
the more “progressive” elements of
society such as legal gay marriage,
stronger government, support of ethnic
minorities and such. The Democrats
has a large number of guaranteed votes
on the northern east coast and west
coast. Their logo is a donkey. The
Republican Party possesses a greater
number of seats in the Senate, and The
Democrats, a greater number of seats in
the House of Representatives, which
often results in a stalemate when
decision has to be made.
The Republicans
The Republican party of the United
States is the one of the two major
parties in the American political
system. The party’s ideology is largely
based on American conservatism and
somewhat classic liberalism. Their
primary attributes and indication of
their conservative views are mostly
clarified by means such as: Larger
military defense, lower taxes,
opposition against gay marriage and
alike, support of death penalty and
individual rights. The party is greatly
supported in the southern states such as
Texas, Kansas and Oklahoma. Their
logo is an Elephant.
The Man Behind The President no. 1
Everyone knows Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, but do we know the other part of the ticket? We elaborate the role of Joe Biden and Paul Ryan. !
The life of
P A U L D A V I S By Line
Paul Davis Ryan was born in 1970 in
Janesville Wisconsin. If Mitt Romney
gets elected tonight – the 6th
November, Paul Ryan will become
Vice-President of the United States.
Before winning election to the U.S.
House in 1998, where he was the
chairman of the House Budget
Committee, he worked as aide to Bob
Kasten, Sam Brownback, and Jack
Kemp, and as a speechwriter.
Paul Ryan is from the Republican
Party, and he has a big interest in the
economies. Together with Mitt
Romney he has made a budget plan
that propose privatizing Medicare for
people under the age of 55,
funding Medicaid and
the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance
Program through block grants to the
states, and other changes - which many
wealthy people like, because the taxes
will be cut in for them, but will be
raised for the middle class – so that
they will pay the same amount, There’s
different opinions about weather this is
good or bad. But Mitt Romney and
Paul Ryan’s campaign has been based
a lot on economy, and through Paul
Ryan’s entire life he has had a lot to do
with economy. He drove a family
company with his brothers - P. W, so
he is reportedly an expert. Mitt
Romney calls him a born leader, and
has no doubts in his abilities.
So to Mitt Romney, Paul Ryan is a
great help and advisor – a great choice
for at Vice-President. It will show after
the election, if they get elected,
whether he was right about that or not.

How much do you actually know about the two big candidates who are running for president? “Dog poop on the roof” As the loving family man and father figure Mitt Romney put himself out to be, there is no doubt that a family trip to Canada would be the ultimate holiday experience for him and his beloved family. He fulfills the picture-perfect-family-image as he together with his wife, kids and little family dog Seamus drives off to Canada. There is just that minor detail that the dog was placed on top of the car roof, in a dog carrier, which led to the poor creature shitting on himself out of fear. As the family drives on their way, one of the kids notices a brown fluent liquid slighting down the car windows. Without a moment to spare Romney of course washes the car windows instantly. But Seamus had to stay on top of the roof as the family drove on. Even though him and his wife Ann, claims the dog loved the trip on top, and that Seamus got very old, two of Romney’s sons later revealed the dog made a run for it once they reached the destination. So much for loyalty! http://www.bostonglobe.com/magazine/2012/01/08/what-our-fascination-mitt-romney-dog-seamus-says-about-our-culture/T6T7ghK6qOVjDmOgpoV4LL/story.html?camp=pm
“Because I got high…” “Teenage boys are frequently confused” says the President of the United States – Barack Obama, in an interview concerning the release of his book: “Dreams of my father”. His statement refers to his use of cocaine and marijuana in his early years, which weren’t a seldom treat for the President back in the day. In school he used to join a group called the Choom Gang which means “to smoke marijuana”. Not to think that, smoking a blow now and then would be enough, but the Choom Gang actually had a concept, in which they smoked in a car, closed the windows so the smoke wouldn’t go to waste, and in that way they could keep on staying high. Obama sure had a lot of fun, but never tried heroine due to the fact that he didn’t like the pusher who sold it. Interesting, now rumors run as high, as he may have been, that he was an addict and still is today, at least in smoking now and then… http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/24/world/americas/24iht-dems.3272493.html http://www.buzzfeed.com/gavon/a-users-guide-to-smoking-pot-with-barack-obama
“Medicare fraud” In the year of 1990 Mitt Romney took the position as one of the chefs for a Medical testing company called Bain Capital. In association with Damon Corp he ran a lot of medical testing’s, which were illegal as doctors didn’t want them to be tested. Romney personally gained 473.000 dollars. In all during 4 years he and the others who led the company gained 7.4 million dollars on Medicare fraud. Even though he claims he took action and stopped the fraud, all he did was ask lawyers what they could do to avoid prosecution. This is confirmed by court reports, which see the candidate do nothing to stop the fraud. The claims later made the company go bankrupted and in the end had to pay a 119 million dollars fine, which makes it the largest fine in history. Well, well he’s made some record! http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2012/01/the-story-behind-romney-medicare-fraud-and-the-latest-superpac-movie/
Presidential election campaign how does it work?
By Simon and Augusta
Campaigns are a way for the candidates to reach the voters. With creative methods
and catchy slogans, it is possible for the politicians to announce their cause.
The parties collect money from different supporters, donors and voters. They end up
spending hundred of millions of dollars, in the long fight to attract and influence the
American peoples vote.
This years election Romney and Obama has used different methods of making
themselves visible for their voters. But not only the politicians is using the media to
reach for their voters. A lot of celebrities, including Chris Rock, Samuel J. Jackson,
Katy Perry, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen etc. have been making videos about why
and whom they are voting for.
This is a really smart move because the celebrities are reaching for a younger target-
group than Obama and Romney might ‘get’.
Presides of celebrities and normal American citizens, Obama and Romney is getting
a lot of financial support from big companies like Microsoft, Google, Harvard
University and lots others who donate a ridiculous amount of money for the
politicians campaigns.
Therefore it’s possible for the politicians to use the media, making ads, posters, and
go to schools and other institutions to hold a speech for them to be elected.

The better of two evils
By Peter and Mathias
Three issues that should make you
reconsider your dedication to
Obama
Obama is a hero. That’s probably what you
will hear, if you ask the average Dane about
the American president. A hero because of
how he pushed the American society closer to
ours, where the state takes care of the poor
and the sick. And his popularity did certainly
not fall when he one year after his election,
was awarded with the Nobel Peace Prize for
his involvement in the war in Afghanistan and
his effort to end it. Already at that time, he
gained a lot of critic because of the way he
chose to do it, which was by increasing the
number of soldiers to sort rip the plaster off,
fast but also painful.
But what many people haven’t heard about is
that Obama is getting closer to start an actual
war with Iran, for the reason of stopping them
from getting nuclear weapons (which we all
know U.S.A is in high position of ditto). But
the flirting with the war might just be a part of
the election campaign, because it seems like
Israel really want to start a war with Iran. And
Obama can’t just say no to Israel! If he does
so, he will lose a lot of the Jewish votes. And
if he loses the Jewish votes he would
probably have to find another plays to live
than the White House!
Not to mention the green issues. Of course,
no matter how you see it, Obama has made a
lot of initiatives to help the environment. But
he has also spent billions of dollars on the car
industry to get it back on track, which, in the
defence of the president, made a lot of jobs,
but even though building more cars is good
for the economy, it’s probably the worst thing
that could happen to the environment –
Simple math: More cars, more pollution.
Also, Obama has made it one of his key
issues to lower the taxes for the middle class
of the U.S.A. If a Danish prime minister
considered to lower the taxes for anyone with
such red numbers as they have in U.S.A, I’m
pretty sure that his/her popularity will sink.
Deep!
To sum up, I’m not saying that you should
“mind-vote” on Romney instead, but really do
some reconsideration about Obama, because
he is far away from that hero we’ve made
him.

Under the skin no. 2 By Chrtistian
The white girlfriends Obama erased from his past
President Obama airbrushed his romantic history to burnish his credentials as a black leader. It is told
that Barack Obama had a life with a lot of romance in his old days. In 1983 he had met the young girl
Genevieve cook but she wasn't the first girlfriend in Barack Obamas life, nor the last. Some people
from the black society sees a desperate president. That he wants to sell an image of himself as a
pioneering race warrior, that he has air-brushed many white elements of his life. Including the string of
well educated white girlfriends so Barack Obama has had to fight hard to convince other African
Americans of his black credibility.
Romney tells millionaire donors what he really thinks about Barack Obama
During a private fundraiser, the republican candidate Mitt Romney told a group of wealthy contributors
what he thought of all the voters that supports Obama. He think of these Americans as freeloaders who
pay no taxes and that they don’t take any responsibility for their own life’s and that the government is
responsibility for their life’s. Many of the people do not see Romney as a good choice for president
because they don’t like to be seen as victims. Mitt Romney is born in a wealthy family and so he
probably don’t understand what it means to struggle although he has mate his own fortune.
Sandy – Friends with benefits? On October the 29th the super storm Sandy hit the Northeast Coast of the USA.
171 citizens in USA, Canada, the Caribbean and Haiti have lost their lives, 6,5 millions citizens in
the USA are without power and thousands of residences have been destroyed in this catastrophe. How does Sandy affect the election campaign for the two president candidates?
Romney with a change of heart
- Sofie K. Jansen
“Every time you have an occasion to take
something from the federal government and
send it back to the states, that’s the right
direction. And if you can go even further,
and send it back to the private sector, that’s
even better.”
This was the response the CNN anchorman
John King got from the governor Mitt
Romney in the Republican primary debate in
June 2011, when he was asked for his view on
disaster relief and especially whether FEMA
should be led by states instead of the
government. FEMA is an abbreviation for the
Federal Emergency Management Agency
who’s in charge of coordinating disaster
reliefs. This quotation illustrates the basic
premises in the politics and ideology of the
Republicans in America, that is, 1) Privatizing
is the way forward; 2) Instead of handling
important issues on a federal level the power
of decision should be given to the individual
states. As for example, why should states with
lower risk of natural catastrophes contribute
with the same as states with high risks?
Shouldn’t it be up to the single state to
decide? Romney claimed that it was a kind of
“federal theft” at the expense of the single
American and he called it immoral and a
“jeopardizing of our kids’ future”.
But then came Sandy.
When the super storm Sandy hit the Northeast
Coast it was only a week before the most
important and closest election in USA
between the Democrat Obama and the
Republican Romney. Mitt Romney suddenly
had a change of heart and in a statement this
Wednesday, November the 1st, Romney said
!
15 !
the following; “I believe that FEMA plays a
key role in working with states and localities
to prepare for and respond to natural disasters.
As president, I will ensure FEMA has the
funding it needs to fulfill its mission (…)”
In this quotation he claims the absolute
opposite than he did in June last year. The
catastrophe has had a major impact in the
media and has affected every American
citizen. Romney realized he would end up
shooting himself in the foot if he stuck with
the statement against disaster reliefs now
when Sandy had stroke. So like Obama he put
his campaign on standby to show his concern,
but he actually never went to the most
destroyed areas. Even though he held some
storm relief events, he kept on for quite a long
time ignoring the most relevant question “do
you still want to cut the funding to FEMA?”
If Romney’s rally only had been about
economics and criticism of Obama’s
administration he probably would get more
votes, but handling the consequences of
Sandy showed how changeable his morale
values are and how much he is pandering to a
specific audience to get votes.
Obama is saving the U.S citizens
- Lærke Folden
In many ways, this storm has been good for
Obama's election campaign.
He has been chosen to go directly into the
problems of the tragedy on the east coast that
happened last week. This has been given a big
impression for many U.S. citizens. Even some
Republicans of the government have said that
this may be a major victory for Obama.
Obama has instead of Romney been in the
worst affected areas. He has chose to push his
planned campaign away, and gone into the
crisis instead. Many Republicans says that it’s
to get more votes, but in the end, there are no
people who really can say anything against
their president who are protecting his citizens.
As I said before are there many Republicans
who think that Obama has tackled this
situation better than Romney. I have an
example from the republican Chris Christie
from New Jersey; “The federal government’s
response has been great. I was on the phone at
midnight again last night with the president,
personally; he has expedited the designation
of New Jersey as a major disaster area ... the
president has been outstanding in this. The
folks at FEMA, Craig Fugate, and his folks
have been excellent.”
Even the mayor of New York City has been
disclosed his choice of presidents, and he says
that he votes for Obama, because he shows
the most important thing for America – if
anything should ever work out, the whole
country has got to fight for it. Even the
president!
The Man Behind The President no. 2
Everyone knows Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, but do we know the other part of the ticket? We elaborate the role of Joe Biden and Paul Ryan.
The life of
J O E B I D E N
by Anna-Dea
Joseph R. Biden Jr. is the 47th and current Vice
President of the United States. He served in the
Senate from 1972, when he was elected at the
age of 29. On January 20, 2009, Joe Biden took
office with President Obama.
Despite his emphasis on diplomacy, Joe Biden
is known for his direct and sometimes
impulsive speeches, which has often attracted
criticism.
On Sept. 6, at the 2012 Democratic National
Convention, he spoke out that he refuted the
notion that Democrats were looking for
governments handouts, and the people, who
needed the government help, weren't trying to
become dependent but just seeking their own
path out of dependency.
”All these men and women are looking for is a
chance, just a chance to acquire skills to be able
to provide for their families so they can once
again hold their heads high and lead
independent lives with dignity”.
Biden was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania.
In 1969, Biden began practicing law in
Wilmington, Delaware, first as a public
defender and then with his own firm called
Biden and Walsh.
In 1972 Biden presented the U.S election in
Delaware and only a month after winning his
first Senate election, on December 18, 1972,
Joe Biden's wife and 13-month-old daughter
died in a car accident. Biden's two sons, Beau
and Hunter, were critically injured in the
accident and ended up in the hospital. Joe
Biden was sworn into the Senate at their
bedsides. A few months later, Joe Biden
collapsed from a brain aneurysm, ultimately
undergoing two surgeries over a few months.
In an interview with The New York Times he
said: ”The accident taught me to always let the
you love know you love them, and never let
!
17 !
something go unsaid”. The aneurysm taught
him that ”It's a hell of a lot easier being on the
operation table than in the waiting room”. At
the 1987 race, Joe Biden that the crises in his
life had learned him to pull himself back up.
Today Joe Biden is back in the game. Barack
Obama and Joe Biden have over time learned,
despite of the 19 years age-different, to adapt
the betterment of the alliance. Joe Bidden has
worked to restrain his ego in the service of his
support role.
The president has come to appreciate Joe
Biden's loyalty, and has deployed him as a
designated contrarian in debates.
Joe Biden love to point out all the quality time
he and the president spend together. For
example a golf outing last month.
Barack Obama and Joe Biden have arrived at
what people describe as a friendship, but some
people, who know them also allow that it is
impossible to know what's going on in the
privileged space between the country's two
highest-ranking officers — one of the most
fraught and scrutinized relationships in any
administration.

How to understand the American election - by Emil Pontoppidan
In order to understand the American election, it is
primarily important to understand this: An
American president is not directly the peoples
choice. The election of the president relies on the
decision of 538 men and women. These people are
the so-called "choice men." The new president must
have at least 270 of these in his favor to win the
important task of becoming the most powerful
person in the world.
Every state in America has a certain amount of
"choice men" and that amount varies in size,
according to the number of people the state have.
It's important to pick the right states for your
campaign, since you don't want to pick a state were
people have already made their choice. That's
because of this game changing rule: If you have
more "choice men" in favor of you in any state,
you'll win the rest as well. This is called a “winner
takes all” principle. That's why the candidates
campaigns are focused on the 8 “swing states”
These are the states that can put the election in your
favor in the very end. In these states, the amount of
"choice men" in favor of a candidate cannot be
predicted. That's why in this certain election, it's
especially important to win the favor in these, since
the choice men for each candidate, is predicted to be
almost a tie.
The so-called “Campaign run” also has a big
influence on the American election. In 2008 the
total amount of money was 2.4 billion dollars, for
the presidential race. Over 1 billion dollars was
spent by the campaigns of the two major candidates.
Barack Obama spent 730 million dollars, and John
McCain spent 333 million dollars. that shows that
Obama spent more than the double amount of
dollars, which maybe had a big impact on the
American election. That could be the reason why
Obama became the president of the United States of
America.

Mormon underwear? By S i lke
Will the Americans vote for a Mormon president?
As you might have heard Mitt Romney is a Mormon. But is it really important?
First, what is the Mormon religion really about? Besides believing in the bible, Mormons believe in the Mormon
book. The religion was founded in 1830, based on revelation of Joseph Smith. Unlike Christianity were Christians
believe that religion was founded in Israel, Joseph Smith founded it in America. That means the religion is very very
American! But there are similarities for example; in the old testimony Moses finds the stone tablets, in the Mormon
book the Mormon Prophet finds Gold tablets instead. And of course they have to be made of gold - we are in
America!
Mormons accept polygamy, because they believe that god measures a man by the size of his family, but in Europe
it is illegal to have several wives. Mormons also have a health diet. They don’t drink coffee and tea, because of the
coffin, but they have now recently been allowed to drink coca cola. Could it have anything to do with coca cola
wanting Mitt Romney to become president, and sponsoring his campaign? Or would it just scare off to many
potential voters if he didn’t drink it?
The funniest thing I’ve learned about the Mormons are that they wear special underwear. This underwear is
supposed to keep all the evil in the world away. Does Mitt Romney also wear this very special underwear?
So what if the president is a Mormon? Will it have an impact on the politics? And how can we know he is a serious
Mormon?
Mitt Romney has been in France for almost 3 years, being a missionary for the Mormon beliefs. I would say he is
pretty serious. But I don’t think he would really be able to change much. The religion might get a lot of power in
the country, and Mitt Romney might have religious views and opinions that he can angel his politics after.
Can we really trust a man, who needs underwear to keep evil things away, to be able to be the president of
America?
