We sometimes forget...
…how often the LGBT community has been told they are sin-ners.
…that families whose members have skin of different colors get
strange looks. …how often words of condemnation are spoken inside
the walls of the church. …that telling others what to think is
mistaken for faith.
The list could go on. While we don’t always get it right,
Chalice does know that God welcomes all people. We know that God
calls us to love first. We know that our God-given intellect should
not be sacrificed in the name of faith.
Help us tell our story.
We’re entering the season of Lent, followed by Easter, a time
when many people who haven’t thought about church in a long time
start thinking maybe it’s time to walk through one of those doors,
again. How can we help those people longing for think-ing,
progressive church find Chalice?
It’s a big question, but here’s part of the answer: we have $250
donated from the Oa-sis that has been dedicated to advertising.
Would you make a special gift so we can do more?
As we celebrate Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Easter, we’d
love to run ads through Facebook and Google. Both offer targeted
ads, which means we get a lot of bang for our buck because we can
target those folks already searching for “progressive” or “LGBT
church.” We can make sure our Facebook posts reach our neighbors
that are not yet our friends.
You’ll hear about other ways you can be involved in letting
folks hear about Chalice, but for now, consider this: how much can
you grow that $250? As a congregation, can we match it? Could we
double it? Triple it?
Talk to me if you’d like to know more. If you’d like to make a
special gift, just make sure it’s clearly marked for this
project.

Week of Compassion Offering Sundays, February 23 & March
2
It’s Wednesday evening and the action of the South Joplin
Christian church is in the kitchen. Church members have gathered as
is their routine, to prepare dinner of the travel mission teams
staying at “The Station.” Housed in an old Quonset hut that never
should have survived the May 2011 tor-nado, the building found new
life as a dormitory and hospitality center for folks who would come
to Joplin and help in the recovery. They gather with church members
in the fellow-ship hall and a prayer is offered. On this particular
Wednesday, sorting out the details of the mission team is a bit
difficult; they come from different churches, different
denominations, and different towns. Several years earlier, one man
assem-bled a small group of friends to travel to a community
recovering from disas-ter. The following year, some of those
friends invited others. The next year, new members invited still
others. The group grew, the members changed, but one element was
constant: a shared commitment to helping others. This mission team
epitomizes the spirit of The Station, a collaborative effort from
its beginning, a shared ministry of the Christian Church (Disciples
of Christ) and the United Church of Christ. Labor, financial gifts,
and a commitment to serve came from all manifestations of both
denominations, enabling a diver-sity of mission teams to come and
serve with the people of Joplin. Back in the fellowship hall of
South Joplin Christian Church, a couple from the church stands.
They share what they experienced the night the tornado struck. They
close with a word of thanks for those who have come. While they are
speaking only to those who have gathered, their words are as true
for those who have already been, for those who have yet to come,
and for those who will never set foot in The Station but whose
prayers and financial gifts have enabled the service of others. You
are a continuation of the Spirit of God that has been working since
right after the storm to bring help to Joplin. Your gifts to Week
of Compassion made this happen, Thank you! Please give generously
as we never know when the next Joplin may occur. Give this Sunday
and next using the special offering envelop found in your
Sojourner.
